I though as much. Oh well. Thanks for the info.

Actually it works just fine. Select a flac file in the finder. Press Space-bar, listen to the file play.

Problems with syncing my ipod through my aluminum keyboard ports now.

Mouse would freeze when I did that. Mouse is also connected to keyboard.

Got it work with Mouse plugged into back of my iMac.

Today though it happened again and the problem seemed to go away when I plugged the Ipod into the back of the iMac instead.

This can be a problem that isn't limited to Macs. Each thing running off of a USB port uses up resources. The solution is a powered extension - which could include one that is designed for your iPod.

The USB ports on the keyboard aren't powered, so this is no surprise.

I don't understand why everyone is upset about the mini player button behavior being different. It used to have the WRONG behavior by clicking on it. It did not conform to the standard GUI way when it went to the mini player instead of doing what EVERY OTHER APP WINDOW did. Now it works like every other app, and the mini player is the "exception". This is much more desirable in the long run.

^ Agreed.

are you sure its not the apple lossless

He's probably running a .flac plugin for QuickTime.

I don't use Apple Lossless. I only use FLAC, so yes I'm sure it was a FLAC file. To the best of my knowledge I have not installed any sort of FLAC plugin for Quicktime. I deal with FLACs a lot, so it's possible that another program installed something, though I doubt it? xACT, Max, and XLD are my go-to programs and I can't imagine any of them would add a quicktime plugin.

I just brought up Windows Task Manager and it's using up 15.5mb of ram and 0-1%CPU. iTunes Helper is taking up 13mb. (XP, 2006 iMac, C2D, 3gb ram)

For comparison Firefox with just this page open is taking up 89mb.

Yeah it's certainly not a memory hog, I noticed also that it loads a lot faster on my MacBook than iTunes 8 did.

... to enable .flac playback in QuickTime, iTunes, and Quick Look, I'd assume.

Well there's your control then. None of those programs utilize installers so any plugin should just be in the application package. Unless someone can tell me where to find out what plugins are installed in Quicktime, I'm skeptical that such a plugin is installed.

And iTunes does not support FLAC, for the record. I was lamenting that fact that it still does not.

anyway...
man i would love this to work.

I'm guessing at some time you installed FLUKE to get FLACs to play in iTunes. FLUKE installs a QuickTime component somewhere that delivers the playabiity in the finder etc...

I know this because I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why my laptop could play FLACs in the finder and my desktop couldn't. I installed FLUKE in the desktop, and voila - FLACs playing in the finder (and in the quickview pane).

Good call with Fluke. I've got it on my machine, but never really gave it an honest effort. I didn't even consider it since I never use it.

Agreed. iTunes 9 takes up a minimum of 50mb of ram (as did itunes 8). It loads fairly quick and all, but the ram/cpu usage should go down significantly. Apple really should invest some time into making a very clean, simple, standalone mp3 player for OS X which isnt hindered by all the crap that comes with itunes (ipod, movies, iphone, genius, music store, apps store, iTV, etc).

It should really be something like winamp. Small, light and blistering fast.

i think that would be great

For now, I'm eagerly waiting for Vox to come out with a library support (hopefully using the iTunes library). Once it does, im never using iTunes ever again;

Vox YES!!!! been using that for 6 months to play me flacs, still no itunes support :(

anyways cant see anything wrong with 9, it looks sexy, love the new bevelled layout and design, it's tidy and still as straight forward as the old one,
no ram issues either, but i think i've got more then i actually need anyways haha

Actually they are powered.

is this some secret then?

i got a ipod nano 2nd gen delivered this morning and my keyboard usbs are the only ones free on my machine, so i plugged it in and got the silly " low power " notice on me desky :( mines the aluminium keyboard and nothing else is plugged in the other sockets

Why not use the keyboard you have and buy a powered USB hub from someone like Belkin?

That's what I did. Actually I have two powered hubs, one a Belkin with an iPod dock.

But I'd rather clean things up and have USB ports on my keyboard that could actually run things such as iPods and portable drives.

I upgraded right away and have had a few crashes, and a few inconsistencies while searching on the iTunes Store (searches not showing up).

I've had a few spinning balls of death, absolutely DESPISE the white background on Grid View, and wish I had a bit more control while doing Genius Mixes - which by the way, I really like.

Using up 109.3 MB of Real Mem, and 98.4 MB of Virtual Mem.

I wonder if the size of the iTunes library has anything to do with the amount of RAM that iTunes uses...

Other than the few nuisances mentioned above, iTunes 9 is a decent upgrade which seems a bit rushed out the door. Hopefully they'll polish some things with future updates.

iTunes is using 134mb for me, iTunes Helper is using 4mb. What does the helper do anyway?

I really do wish iTunes wasn't such a resource hog, however I have noticed it is faster than iTunes 8.

To those looking for a simple music player, check out Cog. No frills, just simple media playing. Point it toward your existing iTunes folder and it should play all the music you buy from iTunes.
