lol siri on iPad wouldn't really work, siri is more built for a phone
"new text from"
"siri call ***"
"siri remind me to ***"

Not really applicable to iPad, but the voice dictation will come in handy for emails and such

You do realize that dictation requires internet connection as well.. right? it's not a local feature.

Whats with all this siri talk..I mean its not like everyone is actually using it on their iphones as it is. besides you need a data plan or a wifi connection to use it right, so if you have a wifi ipad and you're no where near a wifi connection its a dead feature. Siri on an ipad is simply dumb. I mean what would you use it for if you already have it on your phone? Siri is better suited for iphones you know with address books and such..

Siri please text Bob...oh wait...

WHY THE HELL NOT?

Can you imagine the following use-case?

text come in
you say: "Siri call Joe"
If your iPhone is within bluetooth range, Siri on your iPad would instruct your iPhone to call Joe and you can use your iPad as a bluetooth speaker for it if you so choose.

Wouldn't this be a very elegant and simple to use solution to your potential issue?

i don't care about siri on the ipad because it doesn't make sense to have it on that platform. it does need the facetime hd camera to make use of the screen though. i am very surprised they did not include that

Not everyone has broadband or even fast broadband connections. Having a high res connection would cause poor performance for those that don't. Apple would rather have good performance for a good user experience than a killer picture with customer complaints.

I guess I have two problems with your reasoning:

1) Apple has $100 Billion cash, and you are saying that they can't have a beefy enough server to warrant iPad users to use Siri? Com'on now.

2) I find it difficult to believe that there are people who are upgrading their ipads and not having a broadband connection at home.

1) it's not Apple's bandwidth I'm referring to but while we are on the subject, they seemed to have quite a bit of trouble handling the loads today :D

2) Depends where you live. There are many places where broadband connections are not even an option except through (pricey and slow) satellite connections.

One would have to argue that there are significantly more people/households where broadband isn't an issue.. right? At least here in USA.

Regarding your 1st response.. If I were to use your line of reasoning.. then I could easily say why have an apple store, since it appears that on selective few days out of the year, apple store seems to crash under load. (similarly, why have Siri, since for selective few people, they don't have broadband at home)

In the end, I guess I'm just frustrated that Apple has such a product with amazing potential, and yet they are actively working to limit the use of that product. I don't understand it.

Regarding 2: Satellite bandwidth for rural users is now much cheaper with ViaSat-1

12 Mbit/s plans start at $50 for 7.5gigs and go up.

The lack of spec bump in the FaceTime camera was a bit sad, but perhaps they improved the quality of the VGA resolution. I would settle for VGA with better sensitivity and less noise. Truthfully I care more about FaceTime than the iSight. Taking pictures with a tablet still seems awkward to me, but I video chat from the couch at home and on the road with my tablet all the time.

A scenario where I would have wanted to use Siri on the iPad is in the kitchen... one of the things I'm going to use mine for is as a cookery book.

So, it'd be cool to say to the iPad "set a timer for 5 minutes" and then it can tell me when my eggs are ready. LOL.

The answer: The iPad has:

No Clock app - can't set alarm, no timer,
no stock app,
no weather app

A lot of people are gonna be disappointed when they try to ask something like "wake me up after 2 hours please."

Um, the iPad has Address Book and iMessage apps...

Developer APIs make use of tons of OS5 apps that benefit from Siri...

So, yes it makes perfect sense. I, personally, would welcome the addition, and the applications of Siri will only grow.

Siri could more efficiently do every one of those features on the iPad; why wouldn't you want it to?

I am surprised it doesn't have Siri, but it is probably a server capacity issue.

People need to stop saying this..

They still sell iPhone 4S's don't they?

Why the keep adding users.

It's plain and simple marketing. Don't offer everything but incrimental updates as they've always have.

Siri needs an always on internet connection so for many people with wifi only iPads they'd be limited to using it outside of their homes (a lot of the time).

Having said that the dictation also requires an internet connection so I don't know why they wouldn't put siri in it.

I said months ago that it wouldn't make sense to put Siri into an iPad and they didn't. I highly doubt we'll see it in the future as well.

Siri requires you to talk to the device. People don't talk to their iPads, it's not what the device is designed to do. It can certainly be put in, but it'd be a gimmick, something nobody used often.

Doesn't make sense. The only thing that does make sense is Apple withholding features for the sake of product differentiation, and make people upgrade and buy new every year. So next year, you'll see full Siri, FaceTime HD, and quad core CPU.

They could have put that into this new iPad as well, if they wanted to. People are just fishing for arguments here, believing Apple must have some good reasons.

It all comes down to company business and maximize profit. Nothing else. Open your eyes, and think. Anyone who's been around marketing/sales people knows what I am talking about.

They're not going to stop adding it to new 4S's. It's definitely a possibility that it's just a server issue. Half the time it's busy. They aren't going to add a crap load more users all at once. Siri would stop working altogether.

from what my friends with iphone 4s say - it doesnt even work period lol

Siri really needs to get completed and then localized for it to be of decent use. The context sensitive voice recognition is still in its infant stages and the current use of the Siri server still isn't a great solution due to the world not being covered in signal coverage. It's also a little rough using Siri since you have to press a button to activate it. No magic word, no saying "computer, do this". It's still not completely there yet and that's why it's in Beta still. I admit, having the server allows them to collect data on different users which will improve the system but it's in no way ready for general public consumption yet. Also Facetime HD will congest the networks and there may not be enough power in the iPad to support Facetime HD.
