Big bucks smart phone and no notification light???

WTF

EVO got it!

You know what else Evo has? The worst battery life in history. Thanks for bringing it up though.

As for the topic, I'd like a notification light, but I can live without it. Would be nice though.

If you don't like it you can disable it. Considering the awful battery life that the iPhone currently has, I doubt that it would be noticed. You'll still have to recharge every 24 to 48.

Over the course of a week or a month, a person can waste a lot time walking over to their iPhone and unlocking it to check for calls/messages.

Beside, my BB can go 4-5 days WITH the light blinking the whole time so the LED doesn't drain the battery as much as you might be implying.

24-48?

I'm pretty sure that I use the phone enough to atleast charge it once a day from 20%, if not more...

That was my concern. These lights, dings and beeps can become very intrusive. My iPhone stays out of my bedroom for that reason. When I'm in a hotel, it gets turned off at night or it goes into airplane mode. That puts me incommunicado, but good sleep is worth it.

TBH, it probably would've bothered me a lot less if it weren't SO freakishly bright. I had a Curve (8310, IIRC) before that and it was about half as bright as the Bold's LED. On the latter, it actually hurt your eyes to look directly at it, no exaggeration.

What makes you think there would be an option to disable it? That's not how Apple works. Case in point: the pulsing sleep light on the MacBook and MacBook Pro; there's no way to disable that. If Steve were to decide that we needed an LED notification light I don't think that there's any guarantee he'd let us turn it off.

a RBG LED for phone/text/email would be great

It should be there by now.

If you're someone who hates the thought of a flashing light for (whatever reasons) then make it toggle on/off by media.

I really can't imagine a valid reason not to include it. Cost is almost nothing at these volumes; I wouldn't think space would be a problem; it could easily be implemented in such a way such that it's nearly invisible - just like light sensors on the 3G/3GS.

It made sense 10 years ago when folks didn't live online and you could wait hours between emails.

But now it would just flash all the time. What use is that?

That's a very good point.
Can you imagine if applications had access to it? It would be flashing because somebody played Words With Friends, the Yankees game ended, and you have a new Facebook friend request.

There won't be a notification light on the next iPhone.

LOL, well.. I charge my iPhone everyday too. I can make 48 hours if I don't use it much :)

Same here. I'd actually consider the iPhone battery to be very good for a smart phone. By far the best out of every other smart phone I've owned. I'm currently at 14% with 4 hours 32 mins of usage and 1 day and 21 hours of standby. That's one of the main things keeping me with the iPhone.

Not necessarily...

I'm online all day... but on a corporate VPN, so I rely on my phone to let me know if I get personal emails.

A dozen times a day I'm away from my phone (or it's on silence) when an email or other notification comes in. Being able to just glance over at the phone and check for a softly pulsing light is very handy.

It's like a million other such popular options: if you don't like, you don't have to use it.

first and foremost the email system on the iphone without instant push notification in combination with out a LED notification is seriously a downfall

Not necessarily...

This would be absolute amazing!

I have an iPhone, paid for by myself, and a Droid for work.

The Droid's message light is always on. There's always some damn thing that sets it off, whether it be email, voicemail, missed call, what-have-you. So, the example given above is not really a joke, but rather a description.

Now, if I could set it up where only certain people's numbers or email addresses turned on the light, that would be useful. There's probably an app for that, but honestly I'm tired of looking for apps for this that and the other thing.

because notification lights are ugly and not needed. IF you're so lazy you can't push the home button then maybe iPhone isn't for you.

I'm not lazy or a button pushing monkey

it's just that important messages from a new girl friend or business deal = Money :D

A notification LED?

Sorry, that just sounds like the most pointless inclusion.

If you miss a text, the iPhone can be set to vibrate and make a sound to alert your attention to it two more times at set intervals.

I just don't see when you'd need an LED to tell you something is on your phone, because if you're going to look at your handset to check a light, why not just look at the screen?

Seems a complete waste of time.

Smartest post yet.

An notification is pointless and a complete waste if time??? Tell that to RIM. BBs have them. It's more of a convenience factor for me. Not a deal breaker for me, but nice to have. When I am at work, my iPhone is sitting on my desk many times throughout the day. I may walk away for a short period of time, so I will obviously miss any sound or vibration for a missed call or email. A quick glance LED notification light is all it takes.

Anyway, how can my iPhone be set to vibrate and/or make a sound at set intervals?

Isn't it pretty much just as easy to push the home button to see if you have any new messages?

To have it continue to let you know you have a text: settings, messages, repeat alert to on. I manually push my e-mails so I don't know about repeat email message.

The lack of a notification LED is irritating, but it's just another symptom of how poorly the iPhone deals with notifications overall.

Yes, for phone calls, voicemails and calendar items, but not for emails. I don't do much text messaging at all, mostly emailing. It would be nice to have the same repeat alert for emails. I can get over the lack of LED notification light, but Apple needs to get their game on in with dealing with notifications. Atleast centralize all notifications on the lock screen.

Don't strain your brain too hard thinking about any other experience besides your own.

What if you work in a busy environment and leave your phone on a desk, then leave the room for a while, and while you were gone you missed a message and the ensuing vibrations? You make it sound as if the screen is always on...it's not. Some people don't have time to pick up their phone every time they come back from leaving the room.

Some people work in different environments. They might work with chemicals or in food preparation, requiring gloves. Maybe they put their phone on a shelf and can't reach out to touch it every few minutes.

A light would help these and many other people. Just because YOU don't require one doesn't mean others don't.

Why are all you anti-light people so adamant? If Apple DID add a light, it would make a lot of people happy. They would no doubt do it in a subtle if not invisible-when-off way. And they would let you turn if off completely, so why are all you knuckleheads wasting your bandwidth arguing against it? All you're doing is making yourselves look like lemmings. Take it from a fanboy...you are giving fanboys a bad name.
