4.0?

If the new OS let's the Iphone multitask, how about a smart developer doing a notification program running in the background. Used BB Alerts, an app, to do the same on my BB.

Apple won't allow that though. It will be fringeing on the existing noticiations.

only thing I can think of is apple adding a notification widget.

If Apple adds a notification light, it is likely to be implemented differently.

For example, not long ago they had that patent application on the idea of giving notifications by using just a subsection of the LCD while the phone was dormant.

The idea was that only a small LCD section would be softly backlit, and only that LCD section would be actively turned on.

This would allow complicated graphical color notifications without using as much power as lighting/activating the entire display.

Here's what I'd hoped for via a software hack, but it never came to fruition.

Wow, that's a good one. Something has to give and Apple needs to implement one.

YES!!! This is something AMAZING that most people don't understand, if they weren't blackberry owners in the past...

The allure of the flashing red light... and the scared feeling you get with the yellowish green one!

What did the yellowish-green one mean? I tweaked all of mine with BB Alerts, so I don't remember what any of the default colors meant. Mine were all like aqua-green, pink-green, and some kind of pinky-purple, I think.

BB Alerts APP

You could change the LED notification colors to whatever you wanted for emails, voice mails, missed calls, etc.

To do this would require powering up the entire LCD. (Not lighting the entire thing...but still) which would eat battery life up like crazy compared to an LED.

Yellowish-green = low battery

Funny I know this, I've always hated BBs, but now I have one since I'm a BES admin.

Well hitting the lock button to see if there are any missed events causes more battrey usage in my opinion. The entire screen has to be lit vs. a flashing home key.

Apple, definitely add a notification light!

I don't understand why they haven't done this yet. It would be so much more convenient than having to press the home button all of the time just to see if anyone has called or left a message.

Hmm, I was going to say that could have been the proximity sensors, but who knows?

It's giving me a little hope. Anyone know if there is anythinng in that spot on a teardown of a 3gs? Don't remember seeing anything there but a year is a long time.

This should be a message to everyone. Apple doesn't care one bit about the consumer. If it did, it would've kept Google Maps and it would've implemented at least an optional LED notification light by now.

Instead, they eliminate the best mapping option available and ignore a feature that would be so ridiculously simple to implement, and clearly a ton of users want.

Not the best.

Nokia is tons better. I used it on my symbian phones for offline navigation while in Europe and back in North America. Not sure why gmaps is hyped so much but iPhone having it onboard also helped it big time. Apple just saw what they did and decided to help themselves this time. Too bad they never thought it well and it is biting them now, but hopefully they will learn for their next follies lol.

At this point i would wish for apple to strike a licensing deal with navteq. Their mapping is unmatched. I would take a nokia lumia over an android phone if i was serious about mapping and navigation. It is way underrated for how good it really is.

so you just revived a 28 months old thread about LED notification... just to rant a little bit about Apple's Maps? couldn't you find one of the other gazillion threads about that?

*facepalm*

Why does it matter how old the thread is? The LED notificaton light issue still exists, doesn't it?

Then don't buy an iPhone. Go buy a Blackberry. I'm happy there is no notification light, people are glued enough to their damn phones when holding a conversation without having a damn light taunting them not to look at their phone.
