I have a pair of 20 year old AKG k240's that cost me $99 and are still working perfectly. I have 2 pairs of the new versions that are just as good and also $99.

Don't buy hype. Leave that for the ballers.

Today I myself auditioned the Beats at the store and found the AKG's are far far far better when it comes to fidelity for less than a half the price of the Beats ..

Anyone looking for a pair of closed-ear headphones should try out the Beyerdynamic DT 770's. They're not exactly the best for studio mixing (response is not so flat, although I still use them for testing/mastering) but they really liven up the sound and have an incredible, huge soundstage. Listening to music or watching movies is incredible in them. They almost sound like monitors in front of you instead of headphones.

1. Subjective
2. Subjective
3. You're getting mad at a company for making money?! If anyone sees a chance to make a lot of money by overpricing, they will.
4. Yes, earth was made in 6 days.... You obviously don't know much about Russia's army, they sent in their "troops" without weapons or shoes just to show off their numbers. Monster did end up offering a way of fixing didn't they? I think that's decent customer service compared to most companies.
5. Yes there are much better headphones out there but some people like the bass and the looks and are willing to pay the premium, so why not let them and let them be perfectly happy with what they have?

Oh and stay away from those urbanears. Unless your head is the size of baseball, headaches after 10 minutes every time. And they're pretty muffled.

Now the real question is, why the hell have you owned 3 pairs in the last year?!

3) he's a 'rap' artist.... need i say more?

I was wondering when the racism would start.

Beats are not bad because a PoC made them.

Beats are bad because they deliver poor sound quality at a price range where you can get very good sound quality. Any comparison to Apple is kinda pointless because ultimately their products are generally best in class, regardless of whether you believe them to be "overpriced". Average joe is obviously not an audiophile that's gonna do their research but you can literally buy any Sennheiser and be assured a reasonable sound/value balance at the price point you purchase them. So if people are gonna buy beats just point them at sennheiser and let them pick something good looking to satisfy the bizarre fashion urge that pushed them towards beats.

I listened to the latest Beats headphones, expecting to hear the most hear horrible headphones ever to be produced. They are not that bad as people say they are. People are overexagerating.

They are horrible in comparison to a HD700 or HD800, but what headphone isn't?

If you're looking for studio headphones, the AKG Q701 are great for the money.

lol terrible sound? the sound is great and i love the strong bass, it doens't bump too hard for it to sound nasty, and it isn't too weak.

its perfect for hiphop

"Strong Bass" = distortion. You don't have to be a "Professional" nor an Audiophile to know that, I enjoy music the way it was meant to be. You can always equalize stuff if you're craving bass.

its not as clear as bose

obviously its not going to have that same crisp clear sound has bose.

Bose is another example like Beats by Dre, an overpriced product that causes a lot of marketing victims

you buy it for the looks and sound.

its modern jewelery, like a smartphone.
Sadly "modern jewelry" always compromises functionality, a smartphone is not jewelry however there are phones like Vertu, which are made out of precious materials, however they aren't very capable compared to most phones these days. And Beats is another perfect example,I bet they spend more money on advertising per unit than the actual manufacturing costs that are about a handful of dollars.

I like their first generation / original model look, they looked crazy awesome when they came out. But then I saw the sad reality of their soud quality and also that all kids HAD to have them. It's crazy what marketing does out of people these days.

----------

I forgot to mention which headphones I'm rocking. I actually have the complete opposite to the Beats by Dre, they have been proven to be the best bang for the buck. They're also way lighter and they are still stylish.

Yeah I also feel like it would be perfect for hip hop
all the heavy bass and whatnot

I was halfway reading through this post when I realize... Wait, this is Macrumors.com. First thing that comes to mind: OH THE IRONY!
You Look Like a Sheep
Nothing screams originality like having a pair of Beats around your neck. Having Beats on shows that you can't make your own reasoned decisions and you just buy stuff because it's trendy. It's like tattooing 'I have more money than sense' onto your forehead. Not to mention, that most thirteen year olds use them as neck warmers, so be ready to be treated like one.
As someone who hates sheep people, it's is actually funny to see a sheep criticizing sheep. I mean, isn't Apple all about that? They profit from mindless people who buy things because they're trendy, because 'my friends got one but I don't' and/or people who are so obssesed they buy only Apple products.
In fact let me rewrite your own paragraph:
Nothing screams originality like having an iPhone in your pocket. Having an iPhone shows that you can't make your own reasoned decisions and you just buy stuff because it's trendy. It's like tattooing 'I have more money than sense' onto your forehead.
Monster Is An Evil Company
Monster is a cable manufacturer who also make the Beats By Dre Headphones. Here's a few reasons why they're evil:
Hmmm.. But Apple is probably the most evil company in the world:confused:
1. They profit off the common misconception that a $100 HDMI cable is superior to a $5 one [...]
Apple profits from manufacturing really cheap and selling really expensive, what you're paying for is the Apple logo behind it, really.
They force carriers to buy them iPhones the full price but sell them to you half the price. Which makes carriers raise their rates for data and calling plans, which ends up screwing you. So yup, don't blame your carrier, blame your beloved Apple.
2. They supported SOPA, 'nough said (read more here)).
So did apple, 'nough said (read more here)
3. They are bullies. Here's an example of them suing a small mini golf company [...]
Oh seriously!? but Apple has the reputation for being one of the biggest bullies in the tech industry.
They tried to sue a family-run café over its logo
And a small grocery store
Don't forget that they sue other tech companies over ridiculous things.

Awful Customer Service
Luckily I haven't been in need of Apple's customer service as I have never owned an Apple device, but from what I have heard it isn't that good.

There're headphones which have better sound quality, are cheaper and cooler
HAH, There are phones/computers that have better performance , are cheaper AND cooler. No need to explain this.

I actually thought the same kind of people that buy Beats buy Apple, and then I find this post.
Really if these are your reasons for not buying Beats, then why do you buy anything Apple to begin with?
Don't get me wrong, I don't support Beats at all and agree with your post but.. C'mon.
I'm probably gonna get a lot of hate as I will piss off many people here, probably get banned. But I'm hoping I can push some reason in some of you.

Not really, it's more like 'Why not to waste your money on headphones with brilliant marketing and terrible sound'.

lol this is retarded.

i've clearly stated that this is modern jewelry, and for of those that dont consider "smart phones" modern jewelery, lol bring yourself down to this world.

it might not be so much anymore in the US, but these phones still cost a ******** outside of here because they dont have contract deals.

its ridiculously overpriced (just like the "beats", as you guys say)

anyways, lol at these guys saying the sound is "terrible" yeah it isn't on par with Bose, and other high end headphones for audiophiles, but it is better than any crappy 30 dollar over the ear headphones.

again its overpriced (i bought my beat pros for 150 rather than the 450 retail price)

but i want Beats, Why may you ask? because i grew up in Los Angeles, grew up listening to Dre, Snoop, DPG, Spice 1, South Central Cartel, JoDeCi, Mac Dre and of course and pac, etc etc, and the headphones look pretty dope. One of the top producers (hiphop) of all time who i grew up listening to as a child is making some dope looking headphones that does enhance the sound.

are you guys simply angry because the name sells? thats like 90% of all businesses. Are you kidding me? your goal IS to have a celebrity endorse it for you,

Or shall we keep it real, dont have celebrities endorse your products and dont expand. the logic of thinking is pointless

the fact is it sells, yea im pretty sure theres a lot of tools out there that buy it to simply say he has "beats" or gets it just because everyone else does, and he might not even be a fan of rap (not saying you have to).

So why buy apple products? you can very well get a labtop, desktop, for cheaper that has better specs, hell it'll be even cheaper to make a hackintosh (if you put in the work) if you need an apple program/app for your work.

BESIDES the OS (as if it was irrelevant) why buy an apple phone? why not buy a cheap crappy android phone that can do all the functions and features that the iphone does?

all of you guys justifications for hate is so arrogant. why buy true religion jeans? abercrombie? levis? 7? american eagele? why not just buy 15 dollar swapmeet jeans? they do function exactly teh same correct?

tell me, do all of you by generic brands? why buy heinz when ralphs/grocery store ketchup is cheaper and essentially tastes the same.

why dont we all buy those small ugly cars/death traps, it functions the same way as a lambo, aston martin, and a maybach right?

"Strong Bass" = distortion. You don't have to be a "Professional" nor an Audiophile to know that, I enjoy music the way it was meant to be. You can always equalize stuff if you're craving bass.

All i said was that the Beats Pro gave me a lot of base, and no point did i say it distorted the music.

yes i can equalize, but why would i want to do that? and the iphone doesnt have a real equalizer, and all songs come in different Quality, am i going to mess with the equalizer each time it transition from a CDQ quality song to a song of lesser quality?

and hell if you're messing with the equalizer and you dont know how to use it you can blow out your headphones/speakers/sound system (you got to be pretty dumb to do that, but i mean sometimes you get carried away and you want to bump it loud)

so again i dont know why you quoted me for your statement.

and i've bumped my Beat Pros on maximum volume on a low quality song, and it wasnt that distorted besides the distortion form when the actual track was recorded/ripped.

So much hate on Beats. I have the Mixr's and I love them. I'm willing to admit their other lines suck though.

Ahh well I have some time to waste so let me chime in.

Alot of people buy Beats because it's a fad, like Apple, like fur coats, like Nike shoes, like most of what's bought now days.

Really? No. They are, rest, no. Well, shoes, yeah.

The iPhone and Beats headphones have little in common...other than popularity. The iPhone was a breakthrough product that put all of its competitors to shame when it came to market. It was revolutionary compared to top smartphones like the Treo ( which now seems ancient). Beats headphones have never been better than their competition, have offered nothing new, and aren't revolutionary.

I have no issues with someone buying them for their design, though. Many people use them when they are out and about, which isn't the optimal way to hear music quality anyways. I would want something better for home use, though.

Simple fact is..... Made by Dr Dre ...

1) he's not a doctor
2) he's got no audio engineering background
3) he's a 'rap' artist.... need i say more?
4) it's a marketing ploy. pure and simple.

1) Lady Gaga isn't a "Lady"
2) You clearly know nothing about him
3) You clearly know nothing about music
4) Well yes, that's true

Dr. Dre uses Audio Technica M50 in the studio when he wants to 'engineer.'

The M50's are an awesome set of cans with a flat response. Great for mixing, perfect for the price :)

If you guys want to get real technical, the truth is that are ears are naturally trained to listen to monitors not ear damaging headphones.

But wait, you don't see people going around the street carrying a full set of HQ speakers with them everywhere they go do you? Truth is that the average person cares more about portability than sound quality. Hence the birth of the in-ear earphones.

So just listen to music and enjoy it, and don't worry about what the best is, because the 'best' is always changing. :)

For quiet at home listening, I prefer Sennheiser HD 598. Very nice cans, but require a bit more oomph to power than an iPod/iPhone etc.

For noisier environments, I've yet to find anything to beats a pair of V-Moda Crossfade LP-2.

at lunchtime today, I would of agreed. now Ive listened to a new set of portable headphones and added them to my can collection I wouldn't.

Bowers and Wilkins P7 FTW:D

Actually, I have had the B&W P5s for two years and can easily say that they are the best headphones I have ever had, neat, exceedingly comfortable, excellent audio, great build quality and extremely stylish in appearance.

However, having noted that the P7s have appeared, I most certainly plan to purchase them in the near future.

Sennheiser 598s get great reviews from users - including some who post here - and trade magazines; if I hadn't become absolutely smitten by the B&Ws, the Sennheiser 598s were what I had in mind to buy for myself.
