And so what do we say about the opposite? The people who seem to have a significant amount of their identity wrapped around in chasing down the Negative Nancys as if it were God's Work?

You won’t be getting any argument from me on that point. There is most definitely a faction of Apple fanatics who champion everything Apple does on here as well. There are also plenty of posters here who are evaluating this device fairly. They’ve bought it and are either returning it or keeping it with perfectly sane and totally valid reasons why they’ve done it. I’m not talking about those posters. I’m talking about the ones who clearly appear to have a vested interest in seeing it fail and yes, there are plenty of users with a vested interest in seeing it succeed as well. I don’t get either viewpoint unless you own their stock or have shorted it and therefore have a personal financial stake in the outcome. That I get. LOL …

Sure, folks are returning it, but it doesn’t seem to be That many (comparatively) that does.

I'm one of them. My concern isn't about wanting Apple to fail; it's about the negative impact of such technology on real-life interactions. AVP represents a Wall-E future where we're extremely isolated by our devices.

I recognize that Apple has the capability to make this product a success. Trouble is, success here is akin to that of an opium den. I understand that this technological shift might be inevitable, I can't help but feel a sense of loss for the simplicity of experiencing the world directly, without a digital intermediary.

My take is, tech companies must always be Crossing the Chasm, and where there is technological innovation there just needs to be the marketing prowess to sell it to the masses.

Everything about AVP is simply gross, the dad looking at his children’s birthday is astonishingly dystopian. All dressed up and presented as something we should want. Apple is the greatest marketing company in history, I don’t think they’re going to lose.

So yeah, I’m rooting for it to fail, but I’m not delusional enough to think it actually will.

You obviously don’t understand technology then. It is what you make of it. It allows flexibility and freedom that’s not been possible until it developed and became used.

  • Instead of having to sit home, inside, waiting for that important call, wireless phones allowed you to be out in another part of your house, or yard even.
  • Pagers allowed more freedom as if you MAY have been needed for something, you could go about your day and hit up a pay phone or borrow a line.
  • Cell phones allowed you to not only go about your day while waiting for that important call, or needing to make an important call, any time. Not tied down.
  • Smart devices like calendar and contact (thinking the Sharp Wizard here) devices, palm pilots, windows CE, Nokia’s OS (forget name), etc. all allowed us to do more in less time AND save on precious resources like paper (trees), etc.
  • Combining cell phones and smart devices allowed more freedom and quick access to information when we need it.
  • VR / AR headsets allow us a freedom too. Your birthday example is sad. You don’t get it.
All of those freedom’s you have a choice on how to use them. Some people feel compelled to answer their phones or texts IMMEDIATELY. They don’t need to, they choose to. I don’t. I use technology as a tool. Use it when I want, how I want. Recognizing when I need it to be a priority and when not to.

IF ANYTHING, you should recognize Apple’s attempts at NOT isolating users of this device. You can see people around you, and THEY can see a pretty good representation of your eyes when you look at them. THEY want to do it right.

You are entitled to have your opinion, and differing ones are what make life interesting. But I’m disagreeing with your perception with extreme prejudice :D

Too much tradeoff. Thats why returning rates are high. It’s a nice toy to play for few days after that one wonders what to do with it. There are only two promising use cases: 1) movies and 2) virtual desktop environment for mac with floating windows etc. The problem with both use cases is tradeoff in form of hight price and discomfort. Brilliant idea but $3500 to watch movie with brick on your head is not that much better than just having large TV. Same goes with using it with Mac. Awesome ideas, real use cases, but the tradeoff with first generation is just too much. Lighter form factor (glasses-like) and lower price and this thing would sell like hot cakes.

This sums it up what is known about the amount of returns nicely:

Apple isn’t commenting on the Vision Pro’s return rate, but data from sources at retail stores suggests that it’s likely somewhere between average and above average compared with other products — depending on the location. Some smaller stores are seeing one or two returns per day, but larger locations have seen as many as over eight take-backs in a single day.
Obviously, these aren’t large numbers, and there are stores that have had days with just one or zero returns. This stems partly from the fact that the Vision Pro is a low-volume product — something Apple expected from the start. And none of this is a sign of a crisis.

I've found that the vast majority of people who spend time here are older now, a little out of touch, and basically just live their lives hating on Apple, whereas the people in the Apple subreddit... actually like Apple.

Vision Pro is going to be just fine.
Oh ya that must be it. Apple is so perfect and has never done anything to upset the user base.

It’s amazing how much you people go out of your way to make sure Apple is seems as the perfect hero. The “older “ people have been using these products a lot longer than most of you and have gone through more transitions and products than you. Maybe when you can see Apple objectively and not as a cult you will understand.

It couldn’t possibly be a product problem. Must be everyone not drinking the Kool-aid that’s the problem.

Sounds delusional to me to blame something on technology, when it’s human nature. Technology has always impacted the humans. For most part for better. If luddites had their way, we would be stuck in medieval age. Every action/tool does some good and some bad. Look at food and water, too little, it harms, little more, it harms too.

Our returning poll is like 50% returning rate.. It is a disaster for Apple, and very negative for XR industry…

Reddit poll shows about 20% returning rate…

All with about 200 votes.

Why is it so different?
Nothing is qualifying either poll as being actual vision pro owners. But if you must ask, I'd say Reddit is more likely to have a bunch of nonsense votes from people who don't even know what it is.

Regardless, 20% - 50% are enormous return rates for any Apple product and it represents what a joke this product is.

Because neither is a scientific poll. Both are utterly meaningless - people can click anything on a web site, it has nothing to do with reality.

Just one more place for anonymous people to let their anonymous opinion be known, in the polls and in the comments. The only winners are the web sites and their advertisers, because polls like this are all noise, no signal.

What is the obsession with some of you with return rates? What do you care? Return rates for a product this expensive aren't out of norm. Apple knows that there are people who are going to buy it just to try it and then return it. Most people don't have $4k to spend on a VR headset and never had any intention of keeping it.

I saw some guy on reddit say he was returning it becuase he realized he could use that money for a trip with his family. He needed to spend $4K on a VR headset to realize he doens't really have $4k to spend on a VR headset? He never should have bought it in the first place as he couldn't afford it, which is the case for I would say at least half of the returns.

over the last 3 or 4 years the American dream of owning a house and having a good job has become unattainable ?? so people cant spare $3500 for a toy? there are more important expenses to pay for.

We are a different demographic. We are used to Apple blowing our minds, that's why we hang out here. Reddit likely contains people who had different expectations and a different relationship with technology. They are likely enjoying the device for its novelty and the fun of being part of this moment.

I returned because I wasn't happy with it. I'm not sure I would've kept it even at a $1000 price. There was ZERO apple magic in this product for me. For other people, either those who don't know what that is or have limited experience with VR, I'm sure they were less irritated about the state and capabilities of this gen 1.

Apple has continued to do better and better and better as the years have gone on. The users of this forum collectively decided that the iPad, Apple Watch, etc, were a miss, only to be wrong time and time again, just like they'll be wrong on this one also.

Apple isn't a perfect hero, and that isn't a claim anyone has made.

I've been using Apple products since the 80's, but the tales of Apple's immediate demise are, as always, overblown.

For some of you, sure. But not for all of us. Apple didn't price this the way they did because they thought that average Americans unable to buy a home would be clamoring for this.

You've been priced out.

The admins on this Reddit are wack. They ban people for having opinions

I've had numerous posts removed by the mods here because they didn't like what I had to say, even though I said it in a perfectly civil manner, without putting anyone else down.

Don't be so quick to judge one community over another.

In fact, I bet this post gets removed.

What does blowing the minds mean? Especially for a Gen 1 product. Be it Apple Watch, iPad and to an extent iPhone, all had some big limitations at the launch.

Let me articulate. And to be clear, I am a huge Apple fan and I own two other VR headsets, and I am still waiting for a good one from Apple, I have faith in future generations.

1. iPod: It was a pure work of art designed for the enjoyment of art. Nothing was ever wrong with this product despite limitations like no USB file transfer and FM radio. The beauty of the thing starting with the packaging cube was mind blowing, you just wanted it and you loved using it.

2. Mac: I have repeatedly had my mind blown by almost every new Mac, especially MacBooks, with the exception of the Touch Bar MBP. The most limited-capability mainstream Mac was the original MacBook Air, a device with very limited performance, but it was a full-blown usable Mac that could fit in a manila envelope. Actually carrying it around and using it sort of like an iPad today was mind blowing.

3. iPhone: Replaced plastic-screened stylus-controlled smartphones and PDAs with a scratch-resistant capacitive glass touchscreen that could be used just fine for typing on day one. The very first pocket computer that was a delight to use, synced well with your computer, and was really stable and reliable from day one. A completely purpose-built operating system and user interface that has yet to be fundamentally challenged to this day from day one. A phone, a web browser, a PDA, Google Maps albeit without GPS, a music and video player, a notepad, all in one device on day 1, and it worked 10x better than anything before. A 3.5mm headphone jack. A ring-silent switch. Slide to unlock. It was mind blowing on day one. I didn't say perfect, I said mind-blowing. People cite the lack of 3G and copy+paste as major shortcomings on this device. What use did I have for 3G and copy+paste on any other smartphone before this? None. I would know, I owned a bunch of them.

4. iPad: It is not mind blowing, but it has become useful and enjoyable to a lot of people, I'm glad it exists.

5. Apple Watch: It literally saves lives. And by being a polished mass-marketed Apple product it does this for more people than any of the competition.

6. Vision Pro: Ergonomically a huge regression over other headsets available for the past several years, not purely because of weight, more about how it's mounted. This should have disqualified this design option from being shipped even as a gen 1. Mind-blowingly disappointing on this front. I can't even use it. No other Apple Product has had a flaw this fundamental yet easily fixable through better industrial design on day 1. I'm not even getting into the bugs and text input hassles or the screen/lens issues that are not really under Apple's control. With antennagate, "don't hold it that way" despite being hilarious, was an actual solution that allowed you to enjoy an otherwise incredible product. There is no "just don't hold it that way" for the Vision Pro. And don't even get me started on the way your necessary physical keyboard for "spatial computing" disappears when you dial in an environment to escape the grainy pass through.

I'm just disappointed that this is all we got, and I'm waiting for a future version. I don't hate where this thing is going at all. I'm just used to Apple meeting or exceeding my expectations. Can I just keep my standards high without being accused of being broke or a negative person?

THEN Why is Reddit AVP forum user so different? What I am trying to figure out is whether XR industry is failing… because XR industry has been struggling for so many years and waited for so many year for Apple product to turn things around… if even Apple AVP is failing, then where is the hope?
The polls on this website and reddit (or the internet in general) are completely useless and nobody should use them to make/support any claims, ok? Selection bias, sampling bias, vote brigading, etc.

I trust the well-sourced reporting from The Verge and CNet more than these polls - both of those outlets ran articles citing multiple Apple Store retail employees sain the AVP return rate is average to slightly above-average.
