Ever heard of cyber-bullying? Should we not monitor that as well when teens commit suicide? According to you there should be no rules, everything goes right? Anybody can say anything and act like horrible human beings online because things might turn out like a classic paranoia book...

That is not how we do things in this country, thankfully. But seriously, do you think that the FBI or NSA is completely unable to figure out who vgamedude on the MacRumors forums is if they really wanted to?

I'm against getting rid of anonymity because some people are freaking crazy and you never know who might decide to attack you in real life because of something you said online.

I'm sure they can, but I know of ways to remain truly anonymous. It's not too difficult to do.

I'm not about to make it easier on them though, in fact I'm doing the opposite, and I'll never support a position that makes it easier on them.

Besides, I've seen some research on this very thing and it turns out that people are just as rude and vicious when using their real names.

So you can say anything as long as it's accepted? You have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide?

Yeah why not let's have every action, every word, every comment monitored and have that constantly loom over our head. Let's just go ahead and criminalize hate speech too right and criminalize criticism of the government. Who needs free speech anyway? Why do we need privacy? After all I never say anything that I dont want to be tied back to me! There's absolutely no way that giving all of our anonymity and privacy away could be a bad thing.

And in case you couldn't tell, that was all sarcasm. It is remarkable to me that people like you can say this tripe after all the things that went on with the NSA so recently. It's absolutely astonishing that the citizen who gets his freedom curbed and stomped on will turn his cheek and ask for more, but here you are, an example of the exact thing that perplexes me so much.

Maybe you should go read 1984 and ask yourself some deep questions to understand why this is a horrible idea.

Conspiratorial anti-registration defense differs from life now, in what way?

If you don't think you're being watched already, you're clueless. The only thing missing from your delusion in today's world, is the inter-personal accountability. You're safe from me, and I you, but neither from "big brother."

Cyber bullying = turn off your screen or get better parenting

Free speech is free speech there are no ifs or buts, you can't replace parenting with laws, I won't give up all of my rights to live in a country that's equal to a prison.

You're saying that since were already being watched to some capacity that we might as well be monitored totally and give up all anonymity and privacy? What the hell kind of logic is that?

Really? They weren't saying that after Mac/iPhone/iPad, etc. Apple's released a ton of innovate products over the years. If anything, they've been the ones pushing innovation in a variety of industries, but then a trend happens... they stagnate. They wall things up. And everyone else takes their innovation and improves upon it, adding to it, and introducing new products and form factors.

What happened in the 80's/90's is happening again right now, only Windows has been replaced by Google. Not saying this as a hater - I still love Apple products, they just can't keep resting on their laurels, they should be pushing the industry forwards with things like flexible screens and the like, (although who knows if they're working on things like this behind the scenes - I hope they are).

Yes "they" were. Someone is always saying that. The Mac? "Just a toy! If you want to work get a PC!" The iPhone? "Why is Apple trying to coast on the iPod by just adding a phone to it? Nokia is going to OWN them!" The iPad? "Where's the innovation?? This thing's just a big iPhone!!"

Regardless of the possibility that Apple has been stagnant of late (yes, I can admit that it's possible), they're the company that has, in the last ten to twelve years, truly shifted the paradigm.

iTunes
iPod
iPad
iPhone

Everything other companies have done has been built on that foundation.

You could easily argue that the iMac and MacBook Air are both just as influential if not more so.

Utter nonsense. The PPC kicked Intel butts all over town when it came to the kind of work I do (graphics intensive processing.)

Sure, but why don't you ask Apple why they decided to do away with PPC? I am sure you will find many good reasons. :)

I'm saying you're being watched, whether you like it or not. I don't think a registered identity internet would result in the same Orwellian world you predict. We'll have to agree to disagree.

Identity registration =/= Forfeiture of rights or even privacy. (Because e-privacy is a myth)

People hate on Apple because it's an "in" thing to do. I've had it happen with people who have little to no understanding of the tech, business, or culture of it.

There were a lot of good reasons, actually. I'm sure if you spent some time reading about it you'd probably agree and you'd probably be surprised too. I lived through it so I don't actually need to ask anyone.

True. Absolutely.
But I was specifically speaking to how we interact with content and our devices.

Totally, and for the record, I was agreeing.

Pretty sure when I'm using an amnesiac os running tor, and encrypting everything on a secure connection Ive got a pretty good amount of privacy.

Id continue arguing with you but I won't do it in this thread going too far off topic so I'll stop.

But as one final point since you two feel so inclined to remove anonymity, please post your full real name in this thread or as your signature so you can practice what you preach.

I have a buddy that often says "I love golf, but I hate golfers.'

It immediately popped to mind when I read the original post. It's not so much Apple, who is a business who's sole purpose is to maximize revenue and value of their stock.

It's more the diehard Apple fans who blindly defend Apple and attack the competition completely forgetting that it benefits THEM as a consumer. A motivated Apple comes up with the iPhone 4 that raised the bar a TON at the time. A complacent Apple who dominates the market makes users beg for MMS and landscape keyboards.

Too many people think that an 'Apple win' means 'they win.' They naively think that Apple cares about them as a customer...not just another sale of a highly marked up electronic device. They forgive Apple for transgressions that they would RIP another company for. (Like releasing an operating system update that cuts cell connectivity.) They staunchly defend Apple squeezing every dollar out of them (like charging the same price for memory upgrades for 4 years.) Yet they will blast AT&T or Verizon if they raise their price by $5.

You runnin' that there fancy softwares when you're walkin' around town?

That's the problem. Privacy isn't limited to what you do when you're connected to the network.

Like seriously really? I don't get why. On the principal of privacy? Or because you're into some weird ****? Not implying anything, I'm just saying. You're either crazy, or crazy. And that's why I like my internet monitored.

I'd rather air my laundry, than Big B a reason to go through it. I'd be all over you man.

So is your beloved Apple.

Apple makes most of their money on hardware, google sells nexus hardware close to cost because they make money on software and your information, I don't have any illusions about apple though, they're not good either.

Also apple is not my beloved, I'm no fanboy, only have their phone, I'm also trying to decide between an android or iphone as my next upgrade, both are evil to an extent, considering they both had involvement with prism, I definitely understand that friend.

I don't guess this post was too off topic, apologies if it was.

Yes and wait until the ones monitoring it find out you've said something they don't like.

Guys, can we stick to hate, please?

Keep it on topic or I will turn this thread around and we will go right back home.

I was being sarcastic.

Don't acquiesce to me. You'll make me think I have way more power than I do.
And if people think I'm insufferable now....

People just need something to get mad about. More often than not due to insecurity or just wanting to fill their dead time. Go be productive somewhere OP.
