The iPhone 3G (no S) might not seem very attractive to us on this forum, but look at who we are. Not everyone is a smartphone addict.

On the other hand, a $99 8GB iPhone places the pricing of that device squarely in the same line as "dumber" phone models, which will attract people who were unwilling to try a smartphone before, or were unwilling to shell out the cash when it cost more to get one.

If you don't see the point in still selling the old 3G, fine; they're not selling it for you.

That's like saying why not get a car with leather and power windows for a few thousand more. People just don't care much for extra stuff when the product is extremely good without it.

And $100 might be the tipping point that people might pay for a phone. So with the 3G at $99 that is GREAT. People like options.

And hey! It makes it a lot cheaper to get a replacement if my phone cracks or gets water damage. :p

the "won't notice the speed" argument is so completely ridiculous i have to stop and think if the people using it have a single brain cell and maybe we should go easy on them.

i don't notice the speed when i'm on a plane at 35,000 feet but i sure as hell wouldn't choose to spend less money and fly 12,000 miles to australia in a single engined cessna

Except that the difference of 1 second to 3 seconds to launch an app is not the same as 10 hours and 30 hours of flight

You'd buy it because they made it. It's not like people were complaining about the slow speed of the 3G.
3 seconds to launch facebook wasn't THAT time consuming, was it?

BTW, I'm buying the 3GS because it has a better camera and it has 32gb
And most importantly, I can afford it.

I see it this way. 3G is a ferrari and 3GS is a bugatti. Sure Bugatti is faster, but Ferrari is fast too. But at the same time bugatti is 3 times as expensive as the ferrari

the 3g lagged when I sent texts. 3g s doesn't, that's a noticable difference. Simple.

As for me buying it just because they make it...how the hell do you know what I'd do? I've already stated that I bought the 3g s because it meets my needs, not because it has a picture of an apple on it. If the next pre beats the next iPhone I'll have the pre.

What I'm saying is... there's more that the iPhone 3G S can do now that it has double the RAM (256MB) and a faster processor. They're not pushing the 3G S to it's full capacity whereas the iPhone 3G is pretty much maxed out without being too slow. The iPhone 3G has barely enough RAM to run the stock Apple apps. I have a feeling that if Apple ever does let us run apps in the background, they'll require you to have an iPhone 3G S.

One of my friends is in the market for a new cell phone. She is not computer-savvy at all and although she has a few songs on iTunes and her iPod, she easily gets confused each time she needs to update iTunes or download new music from the ITMS. She still wants an iPhone but chances are that she'll use it primarily as a phone and secondarily as an iPod. MMS, texting and adding apps are all probably never going to happen in her case. She is a good candidate for the $99 3G 8 GB iPhone. Another friend, though, who is waiting until the end of August to get her iPhone, IS tech-savvy, already has an iPod Touch and is comfortable with doing more things on a handheld device. She'll be getting a 3G S⃣ when the time comes, and probably the 32 GB version since she's got a lot of music, videos and such.

I actually bought the 3G instead of the 3GS. I don't know--the new stuff wasn't compelling enough for me to go out and spend $100 more. I mean, a compass, voice control, video, and it's faster. So? Not worth it, in my opinion.

because it's an entry level iphone with impressive performance for those that want a smartphone but don't want to pay a fortune for one.

question answered.

move along, there's nothing to see here.

FLAWLESS VICTORY!!!

I would consider getting 3G for my parents if the $30/mo data plan is not mandatory. Then again, if data plan is not mandatory, they wouldn't sell 3G for $99.

$99. That's the reason.

We have friends who wanted an iPhone, but couldn't stomach the $199/$299 entry point.

So, they picked up 2 - 16gb iPhone 3Gs for a total of $300.

They are happy. Me, I had to have the 3Gs :)

Do you realize that you typed "3Gs" the same exact way twice and you were talking about 2 different products?

It's "3G S"! Capitol 'S' and a space. This will eliminate *some* of the confusion.

And the lag was minutes I assume. NO.
I'm not saying there's no difference. I'm saying the difference is so minimal that many wouldn't care.

Also, does it meet your needs?please...
I'm willing to bet money that before 3GS came out you never thought "jeez, i really wish my phone were faster because it takes 2 seconds to send an sms message as opposed to 1 second"

The way I see it is this: I am already going to be paying around $70-$80 a month for my plan for two years. During this time I won't be able to buy a new subsidized phone so I might as well spend a little more up front to get a faster phone.

Let me do some math. Say Mail opens in 1 second rather than 3 seconds on the 3G. If I open Mail only 5 times per day, that is 10 seconds a day. Over the course of my 2 year contract that saves me 2 hours of time that I would have been waiting for mail to open. Now consider switching between apps and it amounts to quite a bit of time :D

But I use my phone a lot during the day so the extra speed is very noticeable (Although I never had a 3G, only 2nd gen iPod Touch). If you can't take spending $100 more than just get the 3G, it is still a very capable phone and still will be in a year or two (Unless you want to play some of the newer graphics intensive games that will eventually be showing up).

I picked up at an 8GB 3G for my son and he couldn't be happier. It's his first smartphone and cant put it down. I'm going to hold off till the next iPhone release. There simply wasn't an enough "wow" factor in the 3Gs to compel me to buy it.

Why did people want the first iPhone still when 3G was released?

3G + 3.0 software does a good job at a great price value. Not everyone needs the latest, or wants it. Or can afford it.

Being smart enough to understand context helped me understand which phones he was talking about.

You should try it sometime.

I just got back from Best Buy. Purchased a 3G for my wife. Trust me. She will love it and could care less that it's not a 3Gs. She also has a first generation Touch and has no complaints about it.

Because it puts the iPhone into an affordable price bracket. The majority of people I know who want an iPhone don't have one because of the price.

Only they didn't really run with that idea in the UK

What I mean is... people shouldn't get used to typing 3Gs because it looks like more than one 3G. Instead, it should look like the same way as Apple has it on their site. "iPhone 3G S"

I am smart enough to understand 3Gs and 3Gs based on the conversation, but it should be typed differently.

No I didn't think that, I actually thought "this lag is annoying the hell out of me".

And how do you know what "many" think about the speed difference?

And 1 last thing before I get completely bored of this...whether or not it's seconds faster or minutes faster, it's faster, I notice and anybody with eyes will notice if they walk into an apple store to see what the difference is.

It's a noticable difference in speed so anyone that says people won't notice should be locked up.

End of.

I'm not trying to insult you. But...
Dude, READ my post. Never said there's no difference. It's not that it's unnoticeable. It's that normal people wouldn't CARE if it's 1 second faster
Yes it's nice to have a faster model.

However, 100 bucks for 1 second faster performance? Yea they care.

Normal people don't really care if your car goes 1 second faster from 0-60. Only enthusiasts do.
Many don't care if there's a bigger engine in a car that looks exactly the same. Unless you're an enthusiast, you wouldn't buy the twice as fast for twice as much money.
Yes it's faster. But useful for the daily commute? Many think not.

How do I know what "many" think?
Look at car sales figures. The majority buys the cheap smaller engine car even if there's a better one.
Another example, look at laptop sales figure. The majority buys 13 inch macbook, and not 17 inch mbp
TV sales figures, console sales figures, et cetera et cetera et cetera.

i'm a normal person, i cared enough about the lag when texting (among other "minor" updates") to buy the 3g s, therefore your argument is proved wrong.

how am i normal? i'm a normal person because i bought the iphone for the iphone performance and features, not for the picture on the back.

Think about it, the 3GS starts at $199 goes to $299 there are some people out there on a tight budget or just do not want to always have the latest and greatest and either way you slice it 3G or 3GS they are both great phones especially with the 3G 3.0 update out now. I actually thought of returning my 3GS and getting a simple 3G 8GB in Black just because I really need the phone and some features, I do not need everything.

I bought mine at Best Buy and there were a ton of ppl buying the 3G 8GB in Black because it was their first iPhone.

This is my first iPhone and I love it 3GS 16GB in White, however I am not using it for Video's or Music but for Apps, TXT, Email, and Sync of my iCal and Address Book.

Personal Preference for some, 3GS may be a must for others, but again either way you get one heck of a Phone.

Why would someone pay this year, for last year technology? They're just asking for trouble. Also, the 3G S isn't JUST about launching apps 1 second faster, but it has better video graphics and framerates as well as more RAM so more pages in Safari will stay open with ease and Safari even renders the web pages faster... especially on wifi.
