If they release a larger screen phone it won't be the 5S because it won't have anything in common with the 5. So like you said it will be called something else.
That said I doubt we'll see a larger screen on this release. From what I read the point of the cheap iPhone is too sell to different markets. And to reduce fragmentation.
By adding another screen size they will only be adding to the fragmentation.
I don't think as many people care about screen size as you think. Sure the avid enthusiast on this forum do but that's a pretty small percentage of Apple customers. I'm still happily using my 4S. Would I take a 4.3-4.7 screen? Sure but I'm just fine with 3.5-4.
I'm hoping for a slew of new hardware and software features on the 5S. If a larger screen is one of them then great. If not...meh.
I disagree - I think you are drastically underestimated the demand for a larger screen. The majority of people really do care about the screen size. I read a recent survey that proved as much.
I hope the person who started the post if right (thought I would be shocked if Apple managed to keep a larger screen a secret this late into the game). If not next month, then when the larger screen iPhone comes out you will see the massive boost in sales.
Do you have a links to the survey?
I'd venture to say the average iPhone owner doesn't really care. The average iPhone owner just makes calls, text, and a little bit of Internet use.
I like how compact the iPhone is. I think the perfect compromise would be to squeeze a larger screen onto the current device. I was actually expecting the iPhone 5 to be the same dimensions as the 4/4S with a 4" screen on it.
The majority of iPhone users want larger screens.
I'd argue the opposite. I have seen more than just a few "normal" people gravitate towards android phones because of the larger screen. I tend to see more Apple core iphone users claim that screen size is "perfect" Those are the people who have bought into the one thumb reaching across the whole screen marketing pitch. Ironically, those are the same people who have the big bulky cases over their iPhones.
The majority of us are buying Apple phones because we like the software and ecosystem. I would go as far as to say the hardware has already lost much of it's "cool" factor. We're going to go out and buy the 5S only because the UI is good and stable.
I for one would love to see a wider iPhone with a 5 inch screen. My case on the phone is way larger footprint than an iPhone with a 5 in screen. I'd just get a slim case and it'd be the same size.
The majority of iPhone users want larger screens. If you think different, you're off your rocker. We stick with our iPhones for the same reasons many of us stuck with our blackberries before turning to iOS. and that reason is stability, consistency, and that the device is coming from a company that knows what they are doing. By at the end of the day, most iPhone users want larger iphone screens. We just dont want to give up our iPhones to get that larger screen.

I have no idea how people fit these giant screened phones in their pockets but I would not consider a phone with larger dimensions... smaller not bigger please. I sit in meetings and see these S4's sitting on the table and I just don't get it. They are cool looking, but I would hate to carry one around.
Please Apple don't create a phone with larger dimensions unless you also provide one with the latest technology that is the size of the 5 or smaller. If they go down the giant screen path, I worry that they will make the fat one the premium one and make the smaller one the budget one. bleh
Stats please or it isn't so....
Just look at the online and forum polls. You have either never run across any of them or you're just blind.

Official Poll Stats. Not some web site that is not official. Most do not know about these sites. I didn't. You need a larger demographics that mirrors some election poll taking for an accurate count. Goodness sakes. A web site is nothing and just look at the total numbers. Not good
When someone presents you some stats you claim that they're not "official". I literally went to google and typed in "iphone larger screen poll" and those were the hits.
Fine what if they're not "official" what makes it "official"? The point is there's quite a bit of desire for a larger screen and that it's not just a slim minority.
Really? Source? I'm asking because in my little world, everyone I know who has an iPhone does not want a bigger phone. Two of those iPhone users in my little world actually were coerced into buying a bigger screen phone by the cell phone carrier sales person, and couldn't wait until their contract was up to come back to iPhone.
So that's why I'm asking.
Apple definitely needs at least a 5 inch screen on its phones. The tiny 4 inch screen is ridiculous but having said that, Apple is not capable of making a larger screen. Innovation has left the building folks. Get used to it.
Yes they would have. The problem with the bigger phone is the difficulty in carrying it, whether it be finding a space in your purse, or fitting it comfortably in your pocket. Besides the fact that an iPhone is better, they wanted to go back to the iPhone because of the size. They would have never left the bigger phone they were "coerced" into if it was the new bigger iPhone.

Wow. Bigger screen = innovation?
At this stage, big screens aren't new and they aren't groundbreaking in the tech industry, so I don't see how bigger screens mean innovation.
No one wanted a bigger screen when the iPhone had a 3.5" screen. Then iPhone 5 came and for some reason people bought something they didn't want. Curious.

I'm sure you know what people want or don't want....
