For me, the benefits are clearer with the phone, which goes everywhere with me and is important to keep locked. With TouchID you can have the device locked immediately but you avoid the slide to unlock/enter your passcode game every time you pull it out. It's infinitely more convenient as your finger tends to center on the home button as you pull it out of your pocket and the device is unlocked before you even look at it.

Basically it adds a tremendous amount of security with no additional hassle. I'll be glad to have it on the iPad as well. Also, as the list of apps that support it grows, it will bring additional security and convenience. For me I look forward to being able to log into my password manager with it as currently it relies on facial recognition which is slow and requires a minimum lighting level.

Thanks for that. I do not use the pass code and have no real need for any security features on my iPad. I use it mainly at home and occasional trips out. Until I try it out it is not something I can see any obvious use for personally speaking. A nice to have maybe, but not if it costs extra!

Because, unless Apple does something amazing with software, you're buying the same basic concept each year.

Yes, Apple made notable improvements with the Retina display in model 3 and weight in model 5, but now you're just seeing incremental updates to keep up with a slower iOS. The iPad needs something fresh.

You really think you can do all the work on your iPad that you would usually use a actual computer for?

well, I found out that all I do is surf the web, watch video, listen to music.. since I bought iPad mini I use macbook very very rarely... so, my idea is sell my macbook, buy iPad air 2 and rarely use wifes macbook with second account... but,i if apple made sty like mac mini - some kind of base to which you can add iPad - iPad switch to display and base will launch os x - instant buy for me (honestly, only thing that makes me think about that post pc idea again is my love to os x, I simply like that system too much:)

Apple has historically shied away from a "spec war" and goes out of its way to play down the specifications on its devices. Conversely, Apple goes out of its way to sell the "experience". Everyone here is aware of the "Just works" and its association with Apple products. The "just works" metric helps Apple tremendously when introducing consumers to new devices and experiences, however it lacks enough steam to push sales when the market has hit a plateau.

If previous generation hardware still "works" - there isn't a huge incentive for the average consumer (not MR denizens) to go out and spend hundreds of dollars on an incremental upgrade.

To me, the iPad is really aimed at people who just want a cheap device that lets them go on Facebook, watch YouTube videos, browse the web, and do other very simple things.

I do like the idea of tablets replacing laptops, but I don't think that will happen until the software becomes much more capable.

I would really associate apple and cheap in the same sentence haha

Cheap device? There are tons of Windows laptops that are far cheaper than a $499 iPad Air..

My Air still runs great and it's cellular so no need to update just yet. Of all the possible updates listed only the 2gb ram would interest me next year...Also I'll be getting a new iPhone soon so that's it for me this year. I'm truly content with my Air.

Meh. New phone every year. New iPad/laptop every 3 years. Apple actually shot themselves in the foot by not holding anything Back on the original air.

I really couldn't ask for anything else.

Retina hd.

Meh it's already super HD for me and for whatever reason tons of content hardly utilizes the current resolution. More is a waste imo.

A8

Meh at no point in time have I ever felt the air was slow in the first place, and the battery is already phenomenal so all the efficiency is whatever.

Touch ID

OK there is someone who will use this but not me. Why lock my iPad when it lives on my coffee table/magazine rack in the can. I have no desire to have a password on my iPad.

2 gb ram

OK got me here. I want 2 gb of ram so apps won't have to close in the background. I want 2gb ram but I don't $500 want it. Another meh that's nice.

Better camera

MEH to the 20th power. Please take the camera off completely so I don't have to look at tourists taking pictures with iPad. Front facing only!

If and when my current air is passed down, or no longer works I will grab whatever the latest one is

The only way I will upgrade my air would be when we get front facing stereo speakers.

It's the only thing I feel is missing from the iPad.

Why is there a lack of enthusiasm?

Because Apple has failed to innovate and add something actually worth upgrading for on the iPad line. Everything past the Retina display has been incremental changes that don't really bring any kind of entusiasm.

It's funny to see how much of Apple's profit is linked to carriers' phone exchange promotions. Without those, we likely would be having this same discussion about the iPhones.

It shows how, at full price, only the Apple most rabid fanboys are willing to keep upgrading yearly.

Normal user:
iPad 3 years
iPhone 2 years

Macrumors user:
iPad 10 months
iPhone 6 months

Why? Software and functions ofc!

Why is there a lack of enthusiasm? IPad Air 2 could be a major upgrade if there's an 8mp camera, Touch ID, Apple pay, slimmer design, retina hd, 2gb ram, split screen multi tasking, gold colour, 32gb base line model. I skipped ipad 4 when I had ipad 3 but this time is different.

Ipad air was mostly all about the new design but inside this will be one of the best.

Because we don't see ourselves upgrading anytime soon? I myself have a retina iPad mini and I don't see myself getting a new one, however good the specs may be.

I am growing weary of the slight, incremental upgrades, not to mention very glitchy software and skimpy memory. I have upgraded each and every year from first iPad upward. I always buy the 64GB with LTE which adds up to $900 plus with Apple Care. I was disappointed with iPad 3 because it overheated and took so long to charge but iPad Air has been biggest disappointment of all with irritating, constant reloads and regular crashing in Safari and other apps that ruins web browsing and cause me to reach for my aging MBA instead. Some of this is attributable to bad software but some is plainly inadequate RAM memory. Quality control (in my case screen tint and shading) has been lacking from iPad 3 forward and resulted in return/exchange on both iPad 3 and Air. (Original iPad, iPad 2 and 4 were fine).

I also upgrade my phone every year. I again upgraded this year to 6 Plus for the beautiful, bigger screen but am disappointed with sluggish performance, buggy software and obvious lack of adequate RAMj.

I have to question why to continue upgrading annually or even semiannually as it is customers like me (enthusiastic annual uograders) who make it feasible to offer such slight incremental uogrades. Apple needs to focus on cleaning up their software, especially Safari, and quit skimping on things that so crucially effect user experience such as lack of adequate RAM. What did they save keeping 1GB RAM in iPad Air and iPhone 6/6+? $10/device maybe. I would have gladly paid the difference.

Significant RAM upgrade and a fused, digitized screen which works accurately with a stylus and is more bright/legible in daylight, are features I'm waiting for, not to mention split-screen multitasking. I could care less about Touch ID on iPad and an even thinner chassis would actually be a deterrent as iphone 6/6+ are such fragile devices.

So, is Apple doomed?

Only if Apple spins it's wheels with existing devices. Imagine where Apple would be if it just stayed with iPods and didn't try anything else. Apple has to find the next big thing to disrupt and make hundreds of billions in that space before copycats and market saturation brings it's margins down. That's their M.O.

I'm sitting this upgrade out because Apple didn't provide me with any compelling reasons to sell my Air for Air 2.

Of course, I might find that once the new iPad is released, I like it enough to upgrade, but at this point I am not enthusiastically looking forward to its launch.

I can't even be compelled to upgrade from my iPad 4. :(

If they had announced that the Air 2 has 2gb of RAM with the new processor I would say people should be pumped for it. None of us know yet how much RAM it has though

If it only has 1gb of RAM I don't honestly see why anybody would want to spend the money on it unless they don't have any tablet at all. If it does have 1gb of RAM then in a way it makes me very happy about my Air purchase last year on release day since that tells me I was right to buy then and not hold out for the Air 2.
