The iPhone 17 looks like a pretty small upgrade to me, the iPhone air looks to me like a bad deal because of the camera and battery... So why the 17 ??? Many of us have the iPhone 14 Pro, if you don't really care about AI (and I don't understand why you would), then I don't feel it's worth to upgrade. There is no revolution here...

i think you right.

for a great number of iPhone users, there seems to be no compelling reason (at least known as of this date) to upgrade.
apple insider has a well written article just today on this general topic (when compared with an iPhone 16).

there are many in this forum who say this about the last 13 generations starting with the S cycles.
Small changes add up over the years and you just upgrade when your 14 doesn’t work anymore in a couple of years.
So people with a X or 11 might be happy to buy a 17 and not a year old 16.

Well, at least there will be promotion across the board (hopefully) which will make old non-pros look antiquated.

Also there are physical differences - new air, new design on Pros, etc. That didn't quite happen with 15 and 16 series, which look similar to 14 models.

The question mark really is the Air, as I'm sure it will be the star of Apple's event. If people find it appealing and enjoy it, then that's enough reason to upgrade. Not everything is tech specs or hypothetical battery life. At least to the general population.

Sure if you are on an old iPhone, upgrade can be cool BUT again unless you want a Pro, you should consider iPhone 16 Pro even if you don’t want a year old phone because it should be much better… The iPhone 17 only seams to import some pro things and have an A19 chip… Tho iPhone 16 Pro will be better like the cam !

Cool design ? = Maybe, let’s say yes… Do you need a new design? Not really !

Consider waiting an extra year, this iPhone doesn’t look revolutionary… The iPhone 14 Pro was one for example.
I want to upgrade and change the size (from Pro to Pro Max - or maybe the Air). Mine is still ok. Got a new battery in December last year, but I want a nicer camera, tbh. I'll pass this to a family member.
I don't need it to look revolutionary.

Does there need to be a revolution? I just need an upgrade and appreciate a new design, better battery and camera than my current phone.
Exactly, iPhone has already won the market, so now Apple only needs to keep the customers buying them. I'm interested in a 17 Pro, since it is rumoured to have a better telephoto camera.

Why do we need a thread to discuss the obvious? People upgrade because they want to. It doesn’t matter whether others understand much less agree with another member, family member, or stranger upgrading. Justifying to the OP or anyone else is not necessary.
I whole heartedly agree with you. No one has to justify their purchase to another. Still though, if the point of the post is just to hear about peoples' reasoning for upgrading that's fine enough.

^^THIS!!
Here we have yet another thread about “no need to upgrade … minor changes…”.
Why people are so obsessed questioning other people’s decision to upgrade when they want is just mind boggling…

To you.

I have an iPhone 11.

After a couple of drops after I'd gone caseless, the screen cracked. No problem! Half a year later, another drop and the top third of the screen stopped being responsive (digitiser issue). Reachability has solved that, although I had to iPhone Mirror to my laptop to enable it, as the option to turn it on is in the top third of the screen!

So ... a pretty big upgrade for me, from a 6 year old, degraded battery, damaged iPhone 11 😁

Confirmation bias.

The fact that others might agree with them makes them feel more secure about their own choice.

Some people are also really stuck on having to NEED something in order to buy/get it. They believe that unless THEY see or have a need, no one else should be getting. It's a form of control, like the driver on the road who is deciding for everyone just how fast to go and won't let people pass because of it.

They become unhinged if you buy or get something THEY think you don't need. Never mind its not their money.

beacuse my phone is 3 years old and my battery is not lasting all day. If I wait longer (ie till next year's cycle), I lose more trade in value on my current phone. I'm not one to get caught in the trap of something better always being around the corner.
