I had a 13 Pro (I wanted the 120Hz screen), have a 15 Pro (I wanted USB C), I'm going to upgrade to the 17 Pro because I'm in the US and the apple+carrier trade-in deals every 2 years basically make it so I only pay tax and cost of accessories (case/screen protector) to upgrade.

I don't really have a compelling reason otherwise. I would like 12GB of RAM and the vapor chamber, and hopefully a larger battery. Those all seem like meaningful improvements.

I am ready to retire my 13Pro, for me the 17 will bring a lot of new stuff. For example I have heard that you cool kids have even an island on your screen 🙂

Pro Max or Max, that is the remaining question.

Oversimplifying, it breaks down into two camps:

Camp 1: I need a new phone because my current iPhone is dying, slow, bad battery, so old it won't be supported by Apple and 3rd party software, etc. Now that I know I need a new phone, I'll start looking to see which iPhone suits my needs and budget.

Camp 2: New iphones are are being released! Look at the the shiny new phones, then decide which shiny new phone I want.

"Need" and "want" are not the same. There's nothing wrong with upgrading your iPhone if you want to. It's your money. But that's not the same as needing to replace an iPhone that is no longer fully functional.

Both camps are fine, but they are very different motivations, and it helps to not conflate the two.

I don't think there will be a Max, only a Pro Max. The Air is replacing the Max.

It’s safe to say I read more about iPhones and operating system updates than my friends and family. But I’ve never given any of them advice about what they should or shouldn’t buy. They’re all capable of making that decision on their own. Each person has different priorities and different finances.

My biggest reason for a new iPhone is usually camera updates. I take a lot of photos and videos. One of my friends prides himself on never taking pictures. How ludicrous it would be to suggest a new iPhone to him because of camera upgrades.

So personally I’m not a fan of blanket advice for people in general.

I am upgrading from the 15PM since I am tried of hot spots that the phone has fairly often especially with the rumored vapor chamber and well with the upgrade program I did skip out last year, but now the apple care+ is expiring and I can just use the phone as a trade in since paid off

I'd generally agree, but with some tech products ( more often with accessories, routers etc) there are some known "lemons", and that's a case where I would say "Don't throw your money at that, because it's not fit for purpose".

It doesn't happen that often with Apple, but it does happen. Back in 2014, Apple (in a moment of complete idiocy) released a Mac mini with 4Gb of soldered-on non-upgradable storage. Even in 2014, that was a Mac that was going to have a very short lifespan and would not be able to do a lot of the things a Mac should be able to do, which made it a terrible product, and I think that was something that people should be warned not to buy (unless you're fully aware of what consequences having only 4Gb RAM will cause you).

Finewoven iPhone cases, the Macbook 12" (although the concept was lovely and it ended up being the prototype all later MacBooks),... products that will give users problems or where performance and durability are far below expectations, rather than "I don't really like it".

I'll be upgrading from a 15PM to a 17PM. This isn't really related to any specific feature, but more just because we are switching carriers and I think I will get the upgrade for next to nothing.

You know, you don’t need to change your phone, you can buy the 15 pro (if you are in a 2 years plan) for cheaper and take another carrier.

Who gives a shît? If someone else wants to upgrade, they can upgrade. I'm so tired of these coping posts by people too broke to upgrade their phone.
Oh no my friend, we help people to make good choices! I can upgrade to the 17 Pro but there is no reason why I would… remember that an iPhone is a tool that helps you do things, what the 17 Pro will do better than the 14 Pro? AI? I don’t care about that, not even useful… action button? Not even useful, camera button? Not even useful… The battery life is correct and the screen too… The only bigger change is the camera !! Tho the problem it that it’s not even a revolution, we are staying with the same main cam so photos on x1 on the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro will look almost the same…

For other aspects like the zoom yeah this is cool but it would be better for me to buy a GOOD camera than this phone which does almost the same thing… Every time I upgrade my device is because I need it not because oh yeah for fun… I am sharing this with people to make people think and maybe save money…

Just an example : When I went from my M1 MacBook Air to M4 MacBook Pro, it was because the M1 was struggling with heavy apps… Also it has great features like more ports, much better screen and more… So now I can work well on heavier things

But now here, yes it will play better games faster (but I don’t play games and no one really needs them, it’s for fun… games on older phones can run well) but yeah that’s it, Apple Intelligence doesn’t really count too…

Don’t forget that I said that people should consider the 16 Pro and if the 17 pro gets a price increase then the 16 pro will be a great deal ! The problem that we have here doesn’t happen every year… we got one with the iPhone 13 and 14… I think we are getting one with the 16 Pro and the 17 Pro.

You don't need to be broke to not be too bothered about upgrading your phone.

iPhones really aren't most people's financial priorities. New iPhone this year or no new iPhone and instead a nice holiday and worry about a new iPhone next year or the year after?

The only person who cares about how new and shiny your phone is will be you.

If you think it is very important for the world to know you have the latest and shiniest new phone, then I have some extremely good audiophile-grade cables for you, a bargain at $1,000 per meter.

I promise you, you're not helping anyone.

Huh? I have a 15PM. Why would I buy a 15 pro?

My point is that the carriers are always offering a huge incentive if you're willing to swap from another carrier to their carrier. Why would I pass that up if I'm planning to switch to them anyways?

That's your choice. If the cost relative to you is "next to nothing" (i.e. the extra monthly cost isn't going to hurt you), then why not? You really don't need to upgrade, but if you want to and it makes you happy...

I'd check the total price you'd pay over the 24 (or whatever ) months though, to verify that it is that cheap. Carriers want to motivate you to switch to them, but equally, they're in a profit making business, not charity.

I want AI features, I want a much thinner and lighter phone with a big screen so it will be 100% the Air for me this year.

Edit: Coming from a 14 Pro Max

I like shiny new toys 🤷🏻‍♀️ I upgrade yearly to the new PM. I go through T-Mobile, pay taxes, and send my old device in.

The profit is in the service. This has been the model for decades. That's why they give you such a good deal to switch. They don't mind a little loss on the front end if you potentially use their service for years and years and years. I think our service will be a lot cheaper than our old carrier too, but we will take in a bill and see what they can do.

In the country I'm living in, the prices of a 24 month phone + contract service vary a lot between carriers. Some are decent value, some are not. Overall, where I'm based, the cost of the phone ( not including the service contract) works out at about one and a half times the cost of buying the phone in a lump sum from an electronics retailer.

That said, the monthly payment for the phone itself is tax-deductible, but if you buy the phone at a lump sum, that cost is only tax-deductible for the month you bought it in - you can't spread the tax education over the 24 months if you buy and pay with a lump sun.

So, there are balancing factors. But the carriers are not subsidizing the phones with the monthly carrier charge.
