Ok; Ill admit, I got REALLY excited when the new line up of macbook pro's came out on Monday. But when I heard the specs and I wasn't so sure about it. Here is 3 reasons why I don't like it.

1) A retina display uses more graphics card ram so the intel 4000 will make it lag like CRAZY. If you play games (such as CSS) don't expect to get a good FPS. The retina uses a lot more pixel detail which will require A LOT of power from the graphics card which it doesn't have a lot of yet (Yes Nvidia 650M is strong but not strong enough for retina yet). So expect to get low FPS. Also a lot of things won't support the retina display.

2) The specs! A 256GB SSD storage? Come on.... People who photo edit/video edit will need ATLEAST 500GB SSD drive. I know that its a VERY thin laptop but i'd rather have the thicker version 750GB ATA hard drive rather than a thin laptop. Plus if i want A thin laptop like that; I'd be looking at the MBA. The 15" isn't portable in general, either way its made to have A LOT of power. I think the non-retina upgraded model with high res gives you what you need already.

3) The battery. Don't expect to get a 7 hour battery. Since the intel 4000 is lagy/useful for a retina display you will probably be running the Nvidia 650M on it which will give you about 1 hour and 30 minutes of battery. The retina will also murder the battery in general.

Sorry but Apple is trying to go too far ahead of its time. We still need some lower res and a little bit thicker laptops for battery and graphics cards. :/

Lol don't let people who wasted $3 000 on a screen negate your point of view. Apple is loving the dedicated fans and $$$ so is my portfolio.

Obviously this is just a sneak peek at the next generation MacBook Pros, that's why they're still selling the older designs, so they can charge premium on this, while people who prefers the functionalities of the legacy systems (flexibility, self-upgradable) and they capture early adopters to its rMBP.
I almost made the decision to jump ship myself, with the display being Retina with reduced glare and considering it's an IPS display almost made me put out and give Apple my credit card.
However, I choose not to be early adopters of anything Apple, sure it's a premium brand, that simple doesn't mean their products will be flawless at first try.
I am still sold by the idea of the new rMBP however, so maybe in 2-3 years time.

tl;dr = reasons why i'm not buying this laptop and why you shouldn't buy one too

If there were major issues with stock applications I think the reviews that have already come out would have addressed it already. Tell me, do you even have any experience with the Retina MacBook Pro, or are you just making random assumptions to make your old Pro look better in your eyes?

I'm actually a bit worried about non-stock applications at this point. I need apps from other manufacturers to not be a blurry mess, and we don't yet know what non-Retina optimized apps are going to look like. We do know that Chrome has some major issues, which I imagine will be fixed, but it's the Adobe suite outside of Photoshop as well as other professional graphics apps that I'm waiting to see the results of before pulling the trigger.

Instead of buyin it I used $3,000 to put a down payment on a brand new Audi convertible.

The MacBook Pro will last longer ;)

You missed the most important missing feature.

4) You can't easily upgrade the thing. I really like how Apple pushes the envelop, creating hardware solutions to problems people didn't know they had, however, this move to fully sealed non-user upgradable systems is not a trend I want to see continue. And no ability to add a second drive, not even a slim port to add another SSD stick. It's nice we still have options today but I fear tomorrow won't be so kind.

Cheers,

$3k? That's weak. I put $15k down on my S4 :p But then again it is only a temporary car so I'm trying not to be upside down when I trade it in next year...

I wouldn't be worried. Applications that weren't optimized for the Retina display on the iOS devices didn't look great, but it wasn't a horrible experience. And as Apple eventually moves the rest of their lineup to a Retina display, more and more applications will be developed or updated solely for the higher res.

They realize some people aren't going to be content with waiting a while for applications to be updated (it certainly won't be as fast as the Retina updates for iOS apps were, that's for sure), which is why they still offer the legacy Pro.

Have you seen the Chrome to Safari comparison? That's not "doesn't look great", that's unacceptable for a $2k+ laptop.

I feel a bit stuck as a professional user. I need to upgrade reasonably soon so I'm not going to wait around six to eight months to see if some of my pro level apps (the rest of the Adobe suite, Maya, etc.) are updated, but at the same time it seems silly to buy a legacy MBP as it's tech that's obviously on the way out.

What people need to consider is Apple’s NEW Retina MacBooks are starting to show the influence of iOS devices in numerous ways, whether it’s gesture controls on trackpads, high resolution displays or the fact that the computers are more likely to be sealed units, not upgradeable by users once they leave the shop. if people are happy then there is no problem.

Harsh to say NOT worth it!! Although you are entitled to your opinion

EDIT:Apple is not the first to do these things but it is doing them with an elegance and simplicity that many of its competitors struggle to imitate

Sure it is, i can add all kind of aftermarket parts. Not to mention the hordes of women too.

haha ok sure... as a woman (who happens to have an Audi), my advice: spend your money elsewhere :)

Doesn't have to be a computer but other things are better well spent. Hordes of women hahah.

I don't think that's quite right. It may be on the way out, but if it's the best tech they have (and in many ways, it is), I'd say go for it. It's not likely that Apple is going to suddenly remember pro users, so... Get one of the "legacy" models, get 3-year applecare on it, and start planning for your transition to a platform with high-end hardware.

You haven't driven a German car before, have you? You can't afford the women after taking the vehicle to the shop.

I know it'll still be around for a while but it's pretty obvious that things are going to start heading the way of the Retina display and the thinner profile and away from the legacy MBP architecture.

I guess it's sort of like buying a used car once the new model has come out. Yes, it still works and it's not unattractive, but the new shiny one has all these cool features. You just don't quite know if the new one is going to work like it's supposed to yet.

That was actually a better analogy than I realized it was when I started it :)

this guy has no idea what hes talking about

1 graphics are amazing i was able to play diablo 3 at the resolution they advertised 2880x1800 at +30 fps

2 not portable? are you kidding? what were you doing 5 years ago when almost all laptops were 2x as thick and 2x as heavy? the thing barley weighs 5 lbs. and is thinner than my finger. this laptop is the perfect combination of power and portability. and if 512gb of storage isint enough they have these things called external hd's which even come in a super portable usb 3.0 ssd version.

3 yes the battery does last at least 5 hours and charges in about 2. you can easily surf the web for 5 hours straight. playing diablo however you'll probably only get 2.5 hours out of it. i was on it all day yesterday. i got it around 2:00, it came with a %85 charge, i played diablo for 45min and used it till 5:00 before i plugged it in with %30 charge left

heres some pics to prove it sorry about the quality they were taken with an ipad

I'd be really curious to see how non-Retina optimized games do (as I believe Diablo III has been optimized), as well as things like Photoshop and Illustrator.

Well yes vw beetle convertibles are for women ;)

It's an Audi buddy

Sure you can, well maybe YOU can't if you spend $3,000 on computers that are non upgradable lol. Plus any American car is in the shop way more than any German vehicle.

I have no clue what the first part of that comment means. As far as the second, I'll repeat, you haven't driven a German car, have you? :)

I love my vehicle but I've paid ridiculously more in maintenance on it than any previous car i've owned (both American and Japanese). I also most likely wouldn't buy an American car now.

lol, being an apple stock holder since 1998 and you still have to finance an audi convertible?

Sure, i'm not going to touch my retirement money. Especially since I am going to retire at 40. Plus I get discounts on interest rates, mine is 1.02% = Free money. :D

The only vehicles I have owned have been Mercedes and Audi. The first comment means that if you spend >$3,000 on laptops you can't afford any money to repair your vehicle. (assuming you bought the new RMBP)

I have not yet bought a RMBP, call me weird but I prefer to let other people find the problems with a brand new product before shelling out my cash. I'm considering one later this summer/early fall but I have a lot of questions with regards to non-optimized apps that I use daily that need to get figured out first.

And I'm driving a BMW now and can't wait till I can get rid of it to replace it with something more reliable. That vehicle will not be German :)
