I've always wondered this, why do people camp out/wait in line when they can just pre-order and get it on the same day?

i really don't understand how people were not able to preorder this time. even if you did not get in on the first wave for the 16th, there was a second wave for delviery on the 19th. this was over a period of 2-3 days from the keynote.

You know some people actually have a thing called a job, therefore can't be at home waiting all day for a courier to turn up which could be from 9 - 5.

Therefore collecting on lunch break, or whatever, plus there are other stores that sell it instead of lining for hours at an Apple store, I got the iPad 2 in ten mins last year at a different store.

it's called pre authorization signature.

That job come with any time off? I mean, it's not like Apple launches new iPads every week...

Lots of reasons:

  • Payday is closer to launch day than pre-order day and they want to get it sooner than later.
  • They do pre-order, but the order inexplicably gets canceled by Apple (happened to me once)
  • They want to see it and touch it before they plunk down $500+
  • Some people have an aversion to shopping online

I waited in line for my iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS I pre-ordered, but Apple canceled it, waited in line for the 4. Bought the 4S a few weeks after it launched. Pre-ordered this new iPad. Bought my iPad 2 on Christmas Eve.

I would imagine having a job is the reason to pre order and not have to spend a whole day hunting down an iPad lol

Time off a PAYING job to collect a device? some people have their priorities mixed up, I have a family to provide for I don't take days of work just because there is a new bit of kit on the market.

fedex will leave it in front of your house like any of your other packages.

Where do you live that you would consider having FedEx leave a $500+ device on your doorstep until you get home from work? Especially on iPad launch day, when people will *know* that there may be expensive packages just left around?

Why are you sorry? isn't that norm then? working to provide for a family? or am I missing something here

Some people have it given to them on a plate I take it.

I was sorta kidding about being a grown up, "providing for a family", and not being able to take a day off and blow it on an iPad.

I work. I provide. But if I couldn't take a day off and blow it on my favorite hobby, I'd be :(

That's all I was saying.... Sheesh.

My point entirely, it's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Fair enough, I mean, I can take the day off by all means, but I wouldn't get paid for it! therefore it's not worth it for me, I'll get it on my lunch break :)

I did the wait in line thing for my iPhone4 and iPad2. Both were admittedly very fun. The people in line around me were pretty nice both times. However, when I tried to buy the iPad2, my bank thought it was highly suspicious that I wanted to spend $729, even though I had more than enough in my checking account to pay it. While I was on the phone with my bank clearing things up (which I did), Apple sold my iPad out from under me even though I told the rep that I would clear things up. I was pretty angry. I did get a smart cover out of it when I came the next day to get the iPad that they were going to hold for me. After I do get my delivery Friday morning and set it up, I might go down to the Apple Store to show everyone in line how great a device it is. I just hope that it comes as early as my new smart cover did today (delivered a little after 10am).

you're kidding me right? plenty of people pre sign for their ipads/iphones because they cannot be home for what ever reason. if you are afraid of your packages being taken, then of course you won't pre sign.

Ahhh, different story. I meant to say PAID day off... :D

Yeah, but on iPad launch day that's a really bad idea. Thieves salivate for days like this. They read the internets...

When I was having major computer problems several years ago, I had to have my PC replaced. FedEx left it on my doorstop out in the open. I live in an apartment complex and in a pretty safe neighborhood, at least according to FedEx. Thankfully the PC was still there when I got home from work and I learned a lesson - if I am not home when FedEx comes, I leave a note telling them to leave the package at my complex's rental office, which is on the premesis.

point taken. there is actually a place on the form where you can fill out a specific location where you want your packages to be placed. i guess that is the best you can do if you want to pre sign.

I would go to a lot of the apple store openings, Its fun to meet new people who have a common interest. But I rather know that on Friday my iPad will come and don't have to worry about how many 64 black verizons they got in stock.

No not kidding, I wouldn't get a courier to leave such an expensive item outside of my house in any circumstances! Anyone could walk passed and take it!

I do it the old fashioned way, go to the shops, never hurt anybody :)
