You know some people actually have a thing called a job, therefore can't be at home waiting all day for a courier to turn up which could be from 9 - 5.

Therefore collecting on lunch break, or whatever, plus there are other stores that sell it instead of lining for hours at an Apple store, I got the iPad 2 in ten mins last year at a different store.

Just an idea...you could have it delivered to work, or delivered to someone you know will be home during the delivery day (if you trust they won't unbox it while you're at work!)

If I weren't out of town this weekend, I'd be going to the Apple Store to get my iPad, instead of having ordered it online. I live in a small town, so the lineup isn't too bad (I did it for my iPhone 4S) and I can be in and out in less than an hour - probably quicker. It's just easier than waiting all day for a delivery guy to show up.

Yeah I would do but I'm a stone mason and work in different areas all the time, my partner could have it delivered to hers but I don't want her touching it I won't get it back :D

I'll go collect on Friday.

I'm constantly in and out of the office and if I miss the FedEx guy I'd shoot myself

Can you not ask your shipping dept/colleague who's always there to do this one little favor for you? You can treat them to a drink or two later.

That's what I do.

I pre-ordered ipad 1 but will buy from best buy. why? because it is a hassle to exchange at apple if I have a tint/yellow screen. apple thinks it is non issue first. second they exchange for a black box version.

Having them [ 4 iPads ] delivered to my business location... I'm there till 7 pm anyway, so might as well.. :)

This..!!

Or, leave it at the front desk/receptionist.. if your work has one!

just get it delivered to your work.. dude..

Not trying to be a smart a$$ or anything, but to the people with a 9 to 5 you could have just got it delivered to your job. That way you could go to work and not have to worry about being home for delivery or standing in line. Just a thought.

Some people get paid on the 10th and 25th (me) and had to wait until then to place a preorder.

Luckily I got paid in the evening on the 8th because the 10th fell on a Saturday, so they paid us on the 9th, which means I get it late at night on the 8th. Direct Deposit FTW.

I'm just glad that I got in for launch day delivery.

Waiting in lines for Apple products represents some of the most depressing/disappointing times of my life.

Original iPhone - Jumped in AT&T line at 7:15AM - Twelve people ahead of me - At 3:30PM I got the last 8GB and the rest of the line went home.

3G - Similar story but waited at an Apple Store and they did not run out until many people after I got mine at 1PM.

3GS - Arrived at Los Gatos Apple Store at 5:15AM with 72 people ahead of me already. Called in late to work at 12:45PM. Was ten people away when they said they had run out at 2:30PM. Next day drove to Apple Store Stanford and waited for two hours until opening at which time they told us no iPhones that day. Waited until Tuesday was told of secret Valley Fair entrance and arrived at 7:30AM to be first in the line! Had an iPhone 3GS in two hours.

Original iPad - Arrived at Apple Store Monterey at 7:30AM. At 2:00PM we were told no more and to check back in three days. Three days later, no delivery sorry. Contacted Genius Bar friend and went in five minutes before close and purchased one they 'found.'

iPad 2 - Arrived at Apple Store Stanford at 6:00AM. Waited until 4PM despite being told multiple times they had run out and multiple line count-offs where dozens of people left after being told they would be out. I persevered and everyone left in line got the iPad 2. Still pissed at the manager for lying to people.

iPhone 4 - Waited in Apple at Monterey in a line from 7:30AM of 200 people for six hours and got the last 32GB device in store. Ended up returning it due to yellowing and Antennagate which increased dropped calls 7x my 3GS on the same commute.

iPhone 4S - Waited until midnight at the computer and successfully purchased two iPhone 4Ss which were delivered on Friday at 1PM. Breath of fresh air!

The new iPad - Opened laptop at 12:45PM wasn't able to place due to server issues until 2:30PM but will be delivered to my work on Friday at 1PM. Breath of fresh air!

Time off a PAYING job to collect a device? some people have their priorities mixed up, I have a family to provide for I don't take days of work just because there is a new bit of kit on the market.

...but none of this family can sign and accept it for you?

At any rate, you're on the extreme defense all throughout this thread. I assume the OP was refereing to the many people that insist on lining up for some type of 'experience'. Not people like you that have made it QUITE clear that you have a billion reasons why you need to be at the store.

I myself generally preorder for new things I want but I have waited in line before, once when the Wii was released and another one for the Sega Dreamcast.

Its fun to meet people in line, hang in line with your friends, get the product a little early and get all hyped up waiting for it. Its more like a social event than waiting in line and its fun for some people.

I'd probably do it again if I was younger and didn't have obligations.

I have a job. I can get my iPad delivered there instead of home. No need to be condescending. There are ways, you just refuse to use them.

If you have to wait for a paycheck, maybe you shouldn't be spending that money in an iPad.

you're kidding me right? plenty of people pre sign for their ipads/iphones because they cannot be home for what ever reason. if you are afraid of your packages being taken, then of course you won't pre sign.

The original question was why someone would stand in line on release day instead of pre-order. If someone can't take the day off (or have the package delivered to work, work from home, or whatever) and has a couple of hours free at some point, or doesn't start work until the afternoon, and isn't comfortable with having the package left outside, it would make sense for them to go to the Apple Store instead of pre-ordering. It's not worth it to me, but my schedule is pretty flexible.

I used to be a regular on this forum, but this thread is a prime example of why I gave it up.

How can so many people be so myopic and unable to see that for as many people that come here, there are just as many different kind of people. It isn't better to preorder, or better to wait in line. It is what it is. People do what they want to, or what they are able to do. And if someone is living paycheck to paycheck, who cares if they decide to spend half of one on a new iPad. It isn't your money; it's theirs.

I'll never get why everyone on the internet is obsessed with being right, proving others wrong, or just being generally snarky at the expense of others.

I haven't been here long, but I do get that feeling compared to other forums that i frequent, alot of people seem to be quite arrogant here, is that a general synopsis of Apple consumers? stuck up, arrogant and obnoxious?

Just saying...

I respect what deserves respect. The obsession to belittle others doesn't fall in that category.

you are trying to be "right"? after of those "righteous".... you are what you just judge.

I was one of those thinking standing in line is foolish. I did pre order ipad 1. I will stand inline for ipad 3 for an hour or two, and if not, I will wait.

I'm not trying to be right. I am right. You're telling me that encouraging the mutual respect of people and their choices is wrong?

Oh...your screen name says it all.

My point entirely, it's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Fair enough, I mean, I can take the day off by all means, but I wouldn't get paid for it! therefore it's not worth it for me, I'll get it on my lunch break :)

Not trying to be debbie downer, but you do realize the chances of you getting a device on launch day, 4 hours after the go on sale is pretty slim. Especially if you are doing it on a lunch break which I assume is an hour at most.

Believe me I hope you find one, but I would not be surprised if you are in here saturday posting "iPads all gone in my area"

I Don't know your experience with these launches so I just wanted to make sure you knew the possibilities of you finding one are going to be slim.

good luck!!!:)

I have not watched that channel for 8 years. moving on...
