There is a good explanation. Apple looks at the big picture, not just a few enthusiasts that want it wider. Take a look at the total sales compare to how many on this forum that want wider. Millions buy and a couple of handfuls that rant on this forum for a wider one. Apple knows exactly what its doing. Sales do not lie. If you want wider, go and select a number of Android phones today...

Oh, and here is the correct picture of the new iphone 5 compared to the iphone 4S. You know, the other picture on another thread that looks about the same but the iphone 5 looked wider in that picture and you commented on and hoped for. Now you see it as being the same width. Some times a pictured is altered a bit.

Stop talking about you know what you're talking about, because you don't. You can't compare total sales to the amount of people on a single forum wanting a wider phone.

Take a look at this thread and the poll results. 153 to 25. That's quite significant.

If people wanted just taller - That poll would undoubtedly be the other way around. You don't know what people want so stop acting like you do.

Jeez...I hate when people say the tablet comparison thing. My 4.8" S3 fits perfectly in my pocket and in one hand. It's LIGHTER and THINNER than my iPhone 4S and LESS intrusive in my pocket. A tablet would NEVER fit in my pocket.

Do you and your kind FINALLY get this difference?

P.S. the taller iPhone is ALREADY copying the 16:9 aspect ratio from Android (and other) phones / tablets. And no phone is ever going to purposely shrink to 4" to match the already outdated iPhone 5.

Maybe for YOU the phone fits perfectly in YOUR pocket. It sure the hell doesn't fit well in mine without the risk of incurring damage of some sort....

Not everyone has either your size pants OR pockets. Mine now goes in a purse when I have to go out and about.

I don't DARE keep it in any pocket if I am to sit down. If I do happen to have pockets large enough to put them in (pants) I ensure I take it out when I get into my car etc. Just the other day in Android Central forum I was readin about a guy who put it in his pocket while driving to BB to get an Otterbox for it and somehow the screen cracked.

Having owned the iP4 AND now the SSGS3, I can say that YES the iPhone does fit more easily and feels less fragile in the pockets.

It was a good point that you made earlier! (just like this one). Honestly, with the size of my hands, and a pinky resting under it for support, if the phone got much taller it definitely would be difficult to lock 100% comfortably.

I have small hands, so I get that. It will be interesting when we finally get to see this phone in person.

I wish they put in a few options for native widgets, instead of the 5th row of icons. like weather, or stocks, or messages, or reminders, keep in natives, and jailbreakers can change it as they please.

I think that would be more useful than a 5th row of apps.

I created that thread :)

ADDITIONAL: That reminds me, I was supposed to change and alter some mock ups for people. Thanks.

I can't believe my RELATIVELY SMALL SIZED POCKETS, for a fairly small sized person (5" 7" and thin) is not representative or smaller of 95% of pockets out there. :) I can honestly say in every pants pocket I use (included tighter jeans) the SGS3 feels much lighter and unnoticeable than the iPhone 4S and in NO case does it take more than about 1/3 of my pocket volume, and even that is conservative. And I never even feel like it going to break. If fact, I had to put a case on it because it felt so light and thin that sometimes I had to feel around in my pocket to make sure it was there. That's the truth.

When I had a GS2 for work, I had to check if it was there a few times as well.

Why worry about a tall Iphone when in a year from now other phone manufacturers will be releasing similar 4" 16:9 screens to copy the Iphone 5? :p

I don't get it either. I can only assume that these dvd case sized phones are purchased mainly by joe average who just buys what's in the store window at the time, kids who like to show off a big screen (which is the new loud), and old people with limited vision.

Got it all figured out, don't cha?

Never understood this argument and I keep seeing it.

Firstly are Android phones copying Apples current 3.5" screen size? No, so why would they copy the 4"?

Secondly, how many years does there have to be 4" Android devices before said phones aren't copying the iphone? The phone Apple is currently using in court against Samsung is the Galaxy S. Supposedly Samsung copied the iPhone on the more then 2 year old phone. Now guess what size screen the Galaxy S has? Yep, 4"!!!!

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!!!!

Hahahahh

I'm an old guy so I remember back in the 80s when kids would walk around with these HUGE boomboxes called ghetto blasters. It was like the bigger the box the better. They all sounded like crap because they were built to be light but large because he who had a larger boombox was the King.

Hmmm I wonder if there's a correlation between low intelligence and the need for oversized things

The lower the intelligence, the less the likelihood of moderation being practiced, generally.

So yeah, you bet there is.

Not entirely, no. Still pondering the rapper type with their roomy crotch between the knees pants, to be honest.

And if Apple was first to introduce a larger screen device while others were content to remain smaller, like say in the tablet field? Then there's no correlation, right?

no..........If that piece of cheap crap leak is really the iphone 5, Samsung S3 will be the new standard for smartphones.

From a purely build quality standpoint, I hope to god not.

The S3 is a well made piece of plastic, but not nearly to the standard that Apple sets.

Severely disappointed that few got the Idiocracy meme in my post despite a picture of the Dildozer.

If you haven't watched this Mike Judge gem...you should. That being said I really was jesting about the correlation between big items and intelligence.

go watch Idiocracy!

If the "tall" iPhone is true, I still contend that Apple will sell the tall phone (for the tall version - one year, and then a "S" version possibly - another year) THEN make the iPhone wider. You know its eventually going to happen.

You'll get a wider iPhone after the milking is done.

I wonder if we see

The new 4" iPhone - starting at $199
The iPhone 4S - 8GB model for $99
The iPhone 4 - free with contract.

3GS gets iOS 6 but is EOL.

This way there's a line of demarkation. 480x320 exits stage left and Retina takes over.

It's one of my favs.

Great minds think alike. Love the poster and statement about it turning into a documentary. :D

Don't like the size or shape, then there is the wonderful world of choice with android.

No one is forcing you to like or buy any Apple products.

Good thing you're here to tell us that.

You really don't get why people are and should be criticizing Apple (especially now that we know they actually pay very close attention to consumers), do you? Oh well.

Don't like the size or shape, then there is the wonderful world of choice with android.

Except there is nothing comparable to the current iPhone in the Android world. All the small display Androids are mid and low end devices with cheap build quality and middling internal components at best, and usually do not get anything in software updates.

The odd thing about Android is that, for all the talk about it having "choices", it lacks any credible good devices in two segments - iPhone-sized phones and portrait QWERTY phones. If you're used to and want the iPhone or the Blackberry form factor and the quality, moving to a similar Android hardware is an huge downgrade.

Why worry about a tall Iphone when in a year from now other phone manufacturers will be releasing similar 4" 16:9 screens to copy the Iphone 5? :p

I doubt that'll happen. It'll be extremely hard for Android makers to cram in a large enough battery into a such small area. One reason that Android makers went for large displays is because the amount of space it allows for larger batteries. Apple is eschewing that by keeping the battery size the same but making the phone a lot smaller overall even with the larger display. To do that they needed the unibody, which will be very expensive to produce.

Go forth and be happy. If it's not with Apple, who cares.

Also, Steve Jobs in his own words:

You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new.

You‘ve got to start with the customer experience and work back toward the technology - not the other way around

When you're young, you look at television and think, There's a conspiracy. The networks have conspired to dumb us down. But when you get a little older, you realize that's not true. The networks are in business to give people exactly what they want. That's a far more depressing thought. Conspiracy is optimistic! You can shoot the bastards! We can have a revolution! But the networks are really in business to give people what they want. It's the truth

It's really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them

Apple has a history of not listening to customers and making great products. Apple should for sure not listen to internet experts that excel at nothing other than obesity, and spewing negativity on internet forums.

You can either invent something better, or buy something else. If you choose to whine and do nothing, that's on you.
