Man, can you imagine how horrible it would be if Apple made a lower end iPod than the iPod Touch?

What a horrid thought. The iPod Touch is the pinnacle of iPod technology. Why the hell would a technologically sophisticated company like Apple go after losers who want a cheap MP3 player with no touchscreen, no app store, etc?

Some of you idiots seriously need to get over yourselves because you are somehow offended that your precious iPhone won't be considered elite forever. Apple is a company and is out to turn a profit. If they determine that there's a large market for a basic ipod+cell phone then don't doubt for a minute they won't make it if they can turn a profit on it. Apple no longer gets service subsidies on monthly iPhone contract payments. Apple sells the handset to AT&T at a big fat price and then AT&T discounts the phone and forces you to sign a two year contract to recoup the cost. Apple makes their money on the hardware sale itself as well as the extremely lucrative sale of their overpriced proprietary accessories, downloads, etc. It wouldn't be any different for something like an iPhone Nano. They sell it to the carrier for $300, it cost them $100 to make it. They pocket $200. The carrier subsidizes it and sells it for $99 with a two year contract and gets huge numbers of new subscribers who want an ipod + phone and like the Apple name and features.

Duh.

They make the iPod Shuffle for Christ sake which is a joke of an MP3 player that doesn't even have a display. There are better alternatives out there that are the same size with integrated display and a few basic controls for cheaper.

And yet Apple sells millions of Shuffles because of the name brand recognition and people buying music on iTunes.

And you bozos think that out of some kind of egalitarian elitist attitude that Apple will scoff at widening their presence in the cell market if they can make billions at it?

Laughable.

PS, I would never buy something like an iPhone Nano, but my wife and other family members who don't want a full blown smart phone but would like an ipod + phone would love it. If Apple makes it they will sell millions of them.

Also this afternoon is the leaked full case pics of the iPhone Nano from of course the same company that leaked the actual case for the 3G iPhone.

What it boils down to is that there are a lot of people here who apparently make love to their iPhone and feel very very special to have such a cool handset.

They don't understand that to the overwhelming majority of consumers a phone is just a phone. You buy it and throw it in the trash in 18 months.

It must really burn peoples asses to think that soon there could be a super cheap iPhone (and associated cheap service plan) out there that all the annoying little kids (other than themselves) on the street have.

Apple is run by brilliant people. People who realize that in a down economy they are still going to sell iPhones but if they have an iPhone with no data plan they can sell 10X as many.

Selling 10x as many more phones means nothing, what really is important is profit and brand image. Apple makes good profits, and it maintains a "luxury" product image. For the same reason apple doesn't compete in the "Bargain Basement" computer industry which is absolutely dominated by companies like Dell.

Apple maintains a luxury image and doesn't sell cheap stuff?

Explain the Apple Shuffle then.

Oh Jesus. I can't believe I have to explain this daily.

Apple does not design all of its products for the people who post on here. If it did, they'd probably be broke.

I just looked up the numbers, and 1.16 BILLION cell phones were sold worldwide in 2007. Apple sold about 4 million in 2007 and I guess has sold about 10 million this year. That theoretically means there were more than a billion cell phones sold that Apple did not sell. I assume that most of these are the units that are free to $99 with a contract, probably closer to the free side. Apple is stupid if there isn't some lighter/nanoer version of the iPhone at least in the works.

I also see a whole lotta crap about how Apple has some image to maintain. Some of you seem to assume that this image has something to do with Lexus or Neiman Marcus. They sell a $49 iPod shuffle. How low-tech can you get? Apple's track record is making stuff simple and making it reliable. The cheap cell phone market is there for the pecking. If Apple could somehow make one that was about $49-99 with a 2-year contract, they would absolutely rake in the dough over time as people's contracts expire.

All that said, I don't plan to buy one for myself. I'm looking toward a 32GB iPhone 3G, probably waiting until the next hardware update to see what happens. That doesn't mean I can't comprehend why someone would buy an iPhone Nano. I don't think I'd ever want an iMac, but I get why it sells a lot of units.

i would love an iphone nano.. ive got a 16gb iphone 3g and before that, i had an 8gb iphone.. one of my complaints is the size, if the iphone nano is the size of the Samsung Tocco, i would be the first to buy one.. the only thing i hope is that they keep the current iphone screen resolution at a smaller physical size..

Gotta agree with many on this thread, when I was upgrading to my 3G and selling my original, my mom was like "Well maybe I'll pay for your upgrade and keep this one."

But when time came closer to getting the phone she started realizing that it wasn't for her and declined the phone because "it's too big and too heavy, maybe if it were smaller or something, I don't need a phone that big."

If Apple were to make the iPhone nano they'd sell plenty of them to moms. At least from my experience.

But for all of use, there are others who want a basic cell phone + iPod. That's it. They don't care about internet access, google maps, a data plan, etc. They definitely don't want to pay $30 extra a month for the data connection. They just want to be able to carry their music player and cell phone with them all day. By combining both into a new product that has a more reasonable monthly cost, Apple could potentially sell to a new audience.

This.

If I didnt have an iPhone I could be temtped by this

basic phone with an ipod built in, available on payg, could be great
