You own a Mac with a LCD? IPS TV or monitor? Non-Samsung made in Korea front-loading washer (including rebrands like Maytag and Whirlpool)? You own an LG.

Ah, I may own a product with an LG part in it, I concur. With an LG marketed brand on the outside? Nope. There are so many other great products out there I don't need to seek LG marketed goods. I know I'm not the only one :)

A recurring issue with the LG UltraFine 27-inch 5K display that causes glitches whenever the monitor is placed close to a router will be fixed, LG has announced.

Recently, reports began circulating online that LG's 5K monitor - created in partnership with Apple - suffers from flickering and freezing when placed close to a wireless router, with this behavior sometimes causing connected Macs to also freeze and require a restart.

On Wednesday, an LG support person confirmed to ArsTechnica that the issue had been reported by a number of users and that it only seemed to occur with the company's Apple-approved 5K monitors. LG has now publicly apologized for the glitch and says all new models made after February will not be susceptible to the problem.

Speaking today to Recode, an LG spokesperson said that the company will resolve the problem by inserting additional shielding into newly manufactured models, which should protect against the electromagnetic radiation from routers that is likely causing the issues.
According to LG, existing models will be able to be retrofitted with the same enhanced shielding, allowing the monitors to be placed near routers without playing up. Owners affected by the issue are advised to get in touch with Apple, LG, or their reseller to arrange for a repair.

Apple teamed up with LG to create both the 4K and 5K UltraFine Displays, specifically designed to work with the new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro. The displays are a successor to Apple's own Thunderbolt Display, which it discontinued earlier this year amid its departure from the standalone display business.

The 5K Display is currently available for purchase at the sale price of $974 until March 31, 2017, when the price will return to $1,299.95. Apple was recently falsely accused of hiding negative feedback about the new display on its web store, when the truth was that reviews had not yet been activated for the product page.

Whatever the reason for the initial delay, posting to the product page has been possible since January 25 and reviews have so far been mixed. LG's display currently has a 3 out of 5 star rating based on 115 reviews, but it's not entirely clear how many of them are solely affected by the router glitch.

I'm still not clear if all monitors are affected or just some... because the AppleInsider article mentioned this:

I have one and it has been operating flawlessly... but I'm still in the 14-day return-window... I wonder if I should return it while returning is easy and wait for the new shielding.... or should I just consider myself lucky it doesn't have a problem. But maybe the issue will crop up in the future if I rearrange my wireless things... I definitely want the display long term -- I love it.
I'm in the same boat.

So I realize that this is a 5k owners thread, but I wanted to comment on some fairly serious issues with the 4K as well. . . My AirPort Extreme is in a completely different room, so that's not the cause, however, with my 2016 13" Touch Bar in clamshell mode, there are a lot of times when the display won't wake up with my Apple Wireless Keyboard, or Magic Trackpad. . . So my thoughts are "I'll open the MacBook Pro, unplug the display and all will be happy". Wrong....

The touch bar and keyboard will light up, but the MacBook Pro screen will remain black... I have to force restart the Mac before it will come back on. . . . Funny that I sold my 29" UltraWide LG Display because of the exact same issues with the Apple MultiPort AV Adapter over HDMI. . . . The same monitor worked flawlessly with my 2015 15" MacBook Pro over HDMI...

I just don't get it. . . Do any of you 5k owners have issues like those described above?

Thanks!

edit - added MacBook Pro for clarity

Yep. I have the same issues with my 5k.

1. Apple doesn't stay in spaces that aren't making money and growing, just like any sensible business.
2. Apple didn't make this product, so it's ridiculous to hold them responsible any more than it is to hold Ford responsible for a flat tire from Goodyear.
Apple got up on stage and promoted these monitors, so yeah I do hold Apple accountable.

It seems more and more early adopters are getting the shaft in all things technology... both hardware and software is increasingly rushed out and justified by 'agile' development methodologies. I think we need to get back to a bit of the more conservative waterfall process and stop trying to be always first to market. Technology is in too much of a rush to failure.

Saw one of these screens in an Apple store for the first time over the weekend, totally changed my opinion of them. Beautiful displays, far nicer than the 4k Dell I am currently using. Doubt I would pay full price for one but very tempted to grab one while they are on sale... ...for when I do eventually buy a new MacBook.

I am questioning the RFI shielding story from the side of LG, maybe it can cure the issue but have the feeling it comes from an component which is to sensitive.
I come to this conclusion given not all LG 5K screens have the same issue. I can operate my Airport WAP even almost touching the screen and I have no flickering at all (tested with multiple Airport versions running 2,4 and 5 Ghz band).

In my opinion the Thunderbolt 3 connector on the screen and bad Thunderbolt 3 cabels included with the screens are in many cases the cause off issues shown, together with a component build in the screen which is to sensitive for RF interference by an manufacturing defect where the same component In an other screen doesn't have this defect.

If LG's conclusion would be correct, all the screens should have the same behaviour being close to an WIFI access point. Given this isn't the case and they can solve it with enhanced RFI shielding I guess my thoughts are close to the truth. It is also a shame for this price point how bad the Thunderbolt 3 connector snaps in to the display, It wiggles and you have the feeling it doesn't fit at all given you still see a part iron from the cable connector.

To get this screen decent to work I stopt using Filevault encription and to get rid of the mouse pointer issue: I stopped the service and restarted it with good results the last couple of days (Go to System preferences -> Accessibility -> Display -> "Shake mouse pointer to scale"stop the service reboot and start the service again)

Yep. I have the same issues with my 5k.

Well it's unfortunate, but good to know it's not my MacBook Pro as Apple suggested. I couldn't see how it would be when the machine works flawlessly without the display plugged in. I'm hoping a software update fixes this.

I agree with you... I think the shielding may contribute to the problem, but there is more to it than that. In the AppleInsider article I quoted twice in this thread, it said they had two monitors side-by-side in the safe RF scenario and one had problems and the other did not.

(FYI, mine is working without any issues, and I do have Firevault turned on.)

Yep. I have the same issues with my 5k.
I have a Dell u3417w connected through Displayport to USB-C adapter to 15 inch Late 2016 MBP and am having the same issues with the need to force restart. I do not believe this is limited to LG's Ultrafine Monitors
