Thanks for trademarking everyone's favorite saying here... it's about time :D :p

The idea was to emphasize how clichéd the phrase has become. Watch Apple release it on a Monday out of spite.

Next Tuesday™...

Update in specs, or an update to get rid of the really dated white plastic look?

The obvious question then is "why switch", if you can get so much more for the same price in a WinTel laptop?

PPC is officially dead according to the Lord God Jobs, so that can't be a reason. Malware - no big deal, just run Norton and any of the free spyware tools.

OS X is "prettier", perhaps - but only the guys at "Queer Eye..." would choose a tool because of the eye-candy in the GUI.

So why, inquiring minds want to know, why you'd want to spend more for less, just to have a Mac....

I want to know why people like you bother to post on mac forms do you just like to bug people... also there are many things in windows you can do most everything that you can do in OSx but the problem is in windows everything has a way of doing what you dont want it to and good luck if you want to get the programs to work together

If Apple changes screen aspect ratios, will they continue to refer to Mac models only by their diagonal screen size, e.g., 12" iBook, 15" PowerBook, 20" iMac, or will they start calling them Cinema iBooks?

It seems unlikely that they would start naming them with heights and widths, instead of the long-time standard of using a single diagonal measurement.

Are there other good choices?

This question has a long answer and a short answer. The short answer is no.

The long answer: The wider your screen gets with respect to its height (while maintaining the same area), the larger the diagonal measurement will be. Thus, a wide screen with the same area as a regular 4:3 screen will get a bigger number.

The marketing department likes big numbers. :D

As long as the iBooks get a brighter LCD and packed with more pixels, I'm passing it up. Apple's portable line of LCDs just plain suck compared to the PC laptops.

iBooks just went to 5-7 days at US Apple store.

5 Days from now is Tuesday. Looks like if you order one now, you might get the updated one.

Question from a Mac Newbie: If the new ibooks and mac minis appear next tuesday in the US (i really hope so! ), does that mean one can buy them anywhere else (like in Europe, for instance)?

The short answer, "no", is wrong.

The answer is simply that yes the screen size will still be refered to by the diaginol measurement but that it'll be either prefixed or suffixed as wide-screen, 16:10, 16:9 or whatever the chosen aspect ratio turns out to be.

It'll be launched world wide at the same time and you'll be able to order it but deliveries may not start for some time and there'll be an explosion of thread about tracking orders and where the hell's my iBook etc. etc. etc...

Yep! my iBook screen is far too dim to work outside in anything brighter than twilight... :(

Thanks, mpw!
Well, I hope they arrive in Amsterdam (where I live) before the 8th of august, I have to buy one Ibook before that time. It would be reaally annoying if they were not delivered by then....

Let's hope that this is another issue that Apple addresses as well then.

I'm also interested in this aspect. I currently "borrow" my daughter's Dell 510m laptop to use when I'm out in the garden and frankly, even in the shade, it's very poor. I really hope than when I get my iBook it's better than that: I don't mind about the resolution but I've got to be able to see the display.

I cannot believe that Apple has any intention of putting some sort of outdoor viewable transflective screen on the new iBook. These machines are not designed to be used outside.. and its not because the screen sucks, but because it wasn't designed for outdoors.

It's like using a butterknife instead of a screwdriver... and complaining that it doesn't work very well. Outdoor viewable screens are specialized and much more expensive then your standard LCD.

Yah, it kind of defeats the purpose if you can't use your portable computer outside of the house. ;)

I'm not looking for perfection, just something a little better than what I currently use. I appreciate specialist screens are more expensive but even standard LCD screens can differ in quality.

If it's not to be then fine, it's just everyone keeps on about resolution and widescreen and for my purposes they're largely irrelevent. It would simply be nice if I didn't have to struggle to see what was being displayed (and I live in Wales so we're not talking bright, glorious sunshine here. :) )

What?! You people actually go outside?!

Seriously, though, I do a lot of my work in the dark, and remember the good old days when you could turn the backlight off. It was great for the battery.

Most likely these will be trivial updates, so there is a good chance you could have it by the 8th, *if* they are released and you order next Tuesday.
