Widgets in iPadOS 14 Limited to Today View in Landscape Mode

Damn I hope they bring App Library though. It’s not quite what I was hoping like Android’s App Drawer but it’s a start.
The App Drawer and the separate home screens were the thing I hated most about Android back before my work started issuing iPhones instead of Android. (I had an HTC One M7.) I hated having two places to keep track of apps, one of which I couldn't manage.

But I'm apparently unusual in organizing all of my iOS apps into 16 folders (17 if you count the Messaging folder in the toolbar). I never have a second home screen (except that iOS and iPadOS insist on installing new apps on a second home screen, even if there is lots of room available on the first home screen. (I have more folders on my iPad Pro, but it's still less than one full home screen.)

I don't get why you're telling fairy tales? I am 100% sure, you can swipe to the right on the home screen to show widgets in portrait orientation. You know, you can do this also today?

Pro tip: Swipe to the right on your home screen. Even works today on iOS 13. 👍

True but I rarely use today view. I would like it to work as it does on iOS 14 where the widgets are front and center integrated with the home page icons

Rene Ritchie, who often reports directly from APple, suggests that lack of widgets is by design.

Wish they’d move the camera/faceid to the pencil edge.

Did Rene talk about it in a Youtube video or podcast? If so can let me know which one.

So does this mean that I can finally place my icons anywhere on the screen that I want to?

No, the auto-arrange of icons is, sadly, still present. I would love to be allowed to place icons and widgets anywhere I wanted on my screen.

Love the logic. Small screen - large widgets, large screen - no widgets

In iPadOS, the layout of icons isn't permanent because iPad supports rotation of the home screen. On iPhone, every icon remains in its place until the user moves it.

Exactly. Ram used and why do I need clutter on my screen? I dont need to see the weather 24/7 or my notes or stocks.. Stupid and a feature I hope I can turn off and not use.

Did you watch or read?

Biggest disappointment of WWDC. This was the only feature I wanted. On my iPad I make a lot of use of widgets (I have no apps on my home screen) and am tired of always having to scroll the Today view on my iPad.

The issue is probably partly because of the icon spacing at present on ipad... if they were to keep the spacing the 2z2 widget would be huge - hopefully they will adjust the spacing down to that of the iphone

This was a feature on a old jailbreak where you could specify the number of columns and rows of icons - and is probably one of the only jailbreak things I still would like to have.

Can we just please get a built in calculator please? Please?
Or just download one? Hardly the end of the world.
There is an excellent one, pCal. Much better than the stock iOS one. Free (9.99 if you want certain very advanced features or would like to support them), no ads, good privacy policy, very respected dev.

I mean... it's dev beta 1? It isn't exactly final. We've seen before in previous builds that some features magically appear in the GM release. So I'm thinking this is just a blip right now, and not ready for the iPad due to it just being too buggy for devs to test with. I'd expect it to come later on.

Ugh... yes. Even my Apple Watch has a Calculator. I don't understand why the iPad can't get one. I just want to be able to access a calculator quickly from the command center shortcuts...

This is beyond disappointing and one of my biggest gripes with iOS. Still, thanks for checking and replying.

I feel sorry for the writer using that iPad. Too many writing apps to be productive. (Yes I understand they are pandering to the journalists by having all of the popular writing apps on the iPad)

Feature that done nothing on the MacOS and people stopped using and now another useless feature I wont use. I dont want or need clutter on my screen. Plus Widgets used to take up more Ram usage on the MacOS so im guessing they will do the same in iOS. Still I hope its an option and not forced to use them.

Fortunately for the rest of us, Apple don't design just for you. Widgets have been a much requested feature on iOS.

This is correct. Because 85% of the news from WWDC were features on Android phones... And I will happily admit that. I left Apple a few years ago due to their stagnation and just returned recently... and man am I happy that they are adding a lot of these features because they are features I miss across the Android ecosystem. Can't wait to have them on my Apple devices.

To be honest, I’m not sure how much this comment makes sense.
Which part? I can clarify if you do.

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. This was what I was most excited for but all I got instead was improved design with these new widgets for IPad. Can’t place the widgets where I want. Literally a missed opportunity. Back in the day, the IPad would get the pro features like split screen, picture in picture mode, etc. But now, one of the best missing features is only on IPhone and IPad can’t do the widgets the same as the IPhone? I really wonder who’s decision this was. A very stupid choice considering Apple wants the IPad to become more like a computer, less of a tablet. I really hope they change this horrendous idea. A large display being handicapped like this is a joke to say the least Apple.

This does make sense. When you are on your iPad, you are looking at it for longer periods of time. It's not something you pull out of your pocket and take a quick peek at. So having it only on the home screen in the today view makes sense.

Sure but last time I checked I don’t want Apple thinking for me. Since the feature is on the IPhone why not add it to the IPad which makes more sense?

Everything old is new again

I still mourn the loss of true widgets in MacOS. Sidebar is a terrible replacement. That said if we are getting iOS widgets limiting them to ONLY the today column, which ONLY shows up in landscape is dumb.

I don’t like how Apple is half-assing portrait orientation on the iPad. “More icons” looks ridiculous when the iPad is in portrait mode. Might as well just have a big bezel at the top and bottom. I was excited about the widgets, but not if they don’t work like on the iPhone...
Agree. Solid UI for both portrait and landscape is a big iPad plus. Hoping Apple quickly rethinks this.

this is from developer.apple.com ipados 14:
Widgets
Easily build widgets using the new WidgetKit framework for SwiftUI. Widgets now come in multiple sizes, and users can visit the new widget gallery to search, preview sizes, and place them anywhere on the Home screen to access important details at a glance.
I hope it was just not ready for the first beta.. I really hope!

I don’t particularly care about the widgets being available or not. I do want the app list from iOS on my iPad. I don’t want every application that I have installed on my iPad just on the home screens all the time. I have to search for pretty much any app not in home bar when I want to use it anyways. I don’t need pages of apps.
