I think Apple has given up on portrait mode for iPad. ipads are mostly used by kids to watch videos (thus landscape) to keep them quiet and the rest by enthusiast who all have keyboards (i.e. landscape as well)
I use my iPad Pro in portrait whenever it’s not attached to s keyboard, which is most of the time.

This really just feels like something scrapped last minute due to time constraints. Because it’s not just widgets, but also the new app shelf thing from iPhone isn’t coming to iPadOS 14 either.
I mean, we’re all aware that Apple Employees haven’t actually gone in to work for the last 3 months right? iPhone was probably prioritized beginning of this year, and then the pandemic hit.

Because of course. Just have to prove what a POS iPadOS is instead of coming up with a way to make this work in portrait and landscape modes.

Feature that done nothing on the MacOS and people stopped using and now another useless feature I wont use. I dont want or need clutter on my screen. Plus Widgets used to take up more Ram usage on the MacOS so im guessing they will do the same in iOS. Still I hope its an option and not forced to use them.

Exactly. Ram used and why do I need clutter on my screen? I dont need to see the weather 24/7 or my notes or stocks.. Stupid and a feature I hope I can turn off and not use.

Of course you don't need to use widgets on your home screen. But stupid? Not at all. Some of us would greatly benefit from quickly seeing a bit of interactive information relevant to our needs.

The next time iOS / IPadOS works fluidly with landscape will be the first.

Why did they bother forking the OS's, at this rate?

Fortunately for the rest of us, Apple don't design just for you. Widgets have been a much requested feature on iOS.
Im sure Tigger.. The old 1% huh?

Yes I cant wait to see clutter and the weather updates every 5 min.. Ohh so exciting.

Maybe swipe across and TaDa.... All your info on one screen without clutter on your home screen. Oh yeah already a feature. So widgets are redundant.

But you can still do that. This feature simply gives another option to those who want it, and without the swipe. Why is that a problem for you since no one is forcing you to use it if you'd prefer to see only app icons?

I’ve read about the complexity of the sizing and positioning of the widgets on the iPhone homescreen (they have been optically aligned) and I can imagine why it isn’t available on the iPad. The spacing is very different of the icons, you can set different icon sizes, the spacing is different between portrait and landscape, etc. I’m pretty certain this will not be possible this year, maybe on the next version of iPadOS if widgets can have real flexible sizes.

Why is it a problem for you that you need 2 ways to view the same content? So you want screen clutter and hardware hogging feature? Sure good luck with that.

It's not a problem for me -- I wasn't the one complaining about this feature which you can use or not use.

Doesn’t look like this will be addressed in any of the betas. Here’s to hoping PadOS 14.1 supports widgets on iPads beyond just the itsy bitsy today view side panel 😬

I can’t believe iPadOS 14 does not support the ability to pin widgets anywhere on the home screen. Is there an official place on Apple website to request this?

I’m fine with the widgets being confined to the sidebar given the increased real estate on the iPad and the complexity that switching from landscape to portrait adds. I definitely see the missing App Library as a glaring and odd omission, though.
I'd still rather see widgets freed from the sidebar (I think they'd be more useful on the iPad's increased screen real estate and I use my iPad in both orientations) but I agree the App Library is the really glaring omission. Seems harder to take it out than leave it in since iOS and iPadOS share the same code base!
