Hey Applejuiced,

I just tried to restore to 4.0.1, and I got an error at the end saying Restore failed, unknown error.

Now the iphone shows the usb cable pointing to itunes logo.

TinyUmbrella is still running server, and the last entry is "Wrote TSS response"

Also the "kick device out of recovery" button is grayed out.

What did I screw up?

Shut down Tinyumbrella and unplug your iphone. Then turn TU back on and plug in your phone. See if that helps get the button functional and not grayed out.
You just need to kick the device out of recovery thats all and then it will start on with 4.0.1 restored.
You can also use recboot for that but TU should do the job fine.

Give that a shot.
Not sure why TU is giving you problems though.
Maybe restart the computer or make sure you have the latest version or TU.

Darn, recboot seems to be Mac only. I'm on a PC.

I'm gonna restart the computer to see if that does anything, but I just downloaded TU today.

Is it possible that I downloaded a bad firmware?

Is there a legitimate known source? I just searched for 4.0.1 firmware and downloaded one...

Doubt it was bad firmware or it wouldnt let you install it.
But if you want download it from here again to make sure:

You can try the whole process again, make sure you run TU as administrator.
BTW there is a recboot for windows.
Try this: http://go2.wordpress.com/?id=725X13...ss.com/2010/07/23/recboot-1-1-no-more-libusb/

I restarted the computer and tinyumbrella still didn't recognize it at first, but after a few minutes it did, and allowed me to kick it out of recovery :D

Then the phone booted but stopped at the connect to itunes screen and slide for emergency.:(

But as I clicked reply to post my new troubles with you, the phone beeped and I looked over to see it set up as phone with 4.0.1 :D:cool:

Thanks a lot man, I really appreciate your help!!!

Sweet. Hopefully I'll be reporting the same results back tomorrow.

Once the SHSH is saved. You went to iTunes and restore, at that point, does iTunes allow you to select the firmware you want to use?

Download and run Tinyumbrella:
1) Make sure you Iphone is detected.
2) check "Advanced Options."
3) In new window, under "Device / Version," select 4.0.1 firmware.
4) Click on "Save my SHSH." Pray Cydia has them. If you don't get an error, it has been saved onto your computer.
5) Repeat to save other firmware hashes if you wish.
6) Now, click on "Display SHSHs." It should listed all hashes you have saved on your computer and can downgrade to.
7) Start "TSS server" and restore through iTunes with firmware shown in #6.
8) If you phone get stuck during restore, trying "Kick out of recovery..."'in Tinyumbrella.

Does this cover everything or will I run across other steps?

Hey guys, does anyone know if this would be the same for an iPod touch? The hacks forum there doesn't seem to be as rich with info. Thanks.

Alright guys, I've backed up my SHSH blobs using TU... What is the next step from here? How do I restore using the 4.0.1 firmware?

I'm trying dude..

and restore through iTunes with firmware shown in #6./QUOTE]

How do I do this?

You don't know the basic of how to restore with a downloaded firmware (google) through iTunes?

Downloaded the firmware, and in ITunes, hold alt (Mac) or shift (windows) + select "Restore." Now, point to the downloaded firmware file

You have to fake authentication. My instructions does it locally with SHSH blobs saved on your computer using Tinyumbrella. That link uses SHSH blobs on the Cydia servers instead. End result, both does the same thing. Just Cydia somewhat more complicated and more steps.

Ok so going with your method... Do I have to put my phone in DFU mode? And when hitting ctrl+restore, where will the firmware be located and named?
