"restoring iphone softare" has been on the screen for about 10 mins so far with progress at a hault... Should I kick out of restore mode and re-try or does it usually take this long?
Been lurking for months. Just registered to thank Myzhi for the steps in the beginning of this thread. I wasted a lot of time last night following other instructions found on the net (trying to downgrade by putting it in DFU mode and then looking for other apps to kick it out of DFU mode, etc.)
Your instructions worked first time. Well, second time, because I was still inadvertently redirecting through my HOSTS. file when I started iTunes and Tinyumbrella.
I have a 4.0.1 iPhone 4 and I just tried to back up my SHSH blobs following iclarified and instructions on first page.
I selected Device/Version 4.0.1 but it said Cydia could not find them. Any reason for this? Strange because I am jailbroken an on 4.0.1.
Thanks, very new to this so would be nice for someone to help clarify.
Next time dont bother with any of this crap. Just edit your hosts file, then shift (or option for macs) click on restore in itunes, point to the firmware, and youre off. Couldn't be easier.
Seriously, this works perfectly, with no DFU mode, no backing up blobs, no third party software. Just edit the hosts file, then act as if you are restoring in itunes as usual.

1) Many people have hard time editing host file, ie where to find it, how to edit and so on. Tinyumbrella just button click.
2) Many have no clue what SHSH hashes are and which, if any, they have saved. Can't use Cydia if phone is crashing, in recovery mode or etc. Tinyumbrella tells them clearly.
3) During restore, phone could become stuck. Tinyumbrella "Kick out of recovery..." comes in handy.
