It has been nearly two years since the Apple TV last received a hardware upgrade, so you may be wondering when a new model will be released.

Below, we recap rumors about the next-generation Apple TV.

In January 2023, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that a new Apple TV was on track for release in the first half of 2024:
Beyond the future smart displays and new speaker, Apple is working on revamping its TV box. A new version with the current design is in the works for the first half of next year with a faster processor, the people said.
The first half of 2024 passed by without a new Apple TV, so that rumor has expired, and there have been no credible rumors about the device since. As such, it is currently unclear when the next Apple TV will be released.

Apple recently announced that it will be holding a special event on September 9, but the only products firmly rumored to be unveiled then include new iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods, with no expectation of a new Apple TV so far.

Here is when the previous five Apple TV models were announced:

  • Third-generation Apple TV 4K: October 2022
  • Second-generation Apple TV 4K: April 2021
  • First-generation Apple TV 4K: September 2017
  • Apple TV HD: September 2015
  • Third-generation Apple TV: March 2012

Whenever it comes out, the next Apple TV is rumored to feature a faster processor than the current A15 Bionic chip, and even lower pricing. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the next Apple TV could have a sub-$100 starting price. The current Apple TV starts at $129 in the U.S. with 64GB of storage, and a 128GB model is available for $149.

Both the second-generation (2010) and third-generation (2012) models of the Apple TV were priced at $99 in the U.S. at launch, and Apple eventually lowered the price of the third-generation model to $69, so there is precedent for a sub-$100 Apple TV that would better compete with low-priced streaming devices sold by the likes of Amazon and Roku.

No major design changes have been rumored for the next Apple TV specifically, but Gurman said Apple has considered adding a built-in camera to a future model. tvOS 17 added a FaceTime app to the Apple TV, allowing for users to have video calls by using the rear camera on a connected iPhone or iPad. If the Apple TV gained a built-in camera, users would no longer need to rely on an external device for video calls on the TV.

I'm due for a new one. I've got the first gen 4K with old lightning remote, and buttons are starting to stick after years of use and abuse. Plus a newer version would probably be set up to handle whatever Apple Intelligence features they want to bring to tvOS. I'm sure my current version can't handle it.

... has expired 🤣

Why sugarcoat it? Just say he was wrong. Again.

I welcome a lower price. I also would like to see Apple offer an Apple TV without storage for around $50 to compete against Roku devices and Amazon Fire sticks. Great for those who just want to stream (not purchase) content and don't want to be tracked.

You would definitely think they'd push a bit more investment in the Apple TV, especially with all this content they're ramming money in. My first gen 4K one feels a bit slow now, but still way faster than my newish Samsung tv's built in apps.

Your 4k model feels slow? I have one too, bought a couple months after it was released in 2017 and it quick enough that I can't detect any hesitation or lag, at all. There are just a handful of streaming services installed and no games/other.

It's been a couple years since I owned an Apple TV (I've just been using the built-in apps on my LG OLED TV), but I'd love to have one again. But I'm going to wait until a new model comes out, and I'll be disappointed if there's nothing new this year. :(

(I still think the model with the built-in camera makes no sense).

Content few people want to pay for, it seems.

This could be a first for subscribers outside of the U.S. Apple is going to offer Apple TV+ and Apple Music for free to Airtel's premium subscribers.

Apple is teaming up with Bharti Airtel to offer free access to Apple TV+ and Apple Music to Airtel’s premium customers. This partnership aims to give Apple a stronger presence in India’s competitive entertainment market, which is valued at $28 billion.

Exclusive offers: Airtel Xstream customers with premium WiFi and Postpaid plans will get Apple TV+ included for free. This service offers a wide range of films, TV shows, documentaries, and kids’ content.

Apple Music access: Airtel users, especially those with Wynk Premium, will also receive exclusive offers for Apple Music. This includes access to a collection of global and Indian music, expertly curated playlists, and special features like Apple Music Sing and Spatial Audio.

This partnership is significant as it comes at a time when competition in India’s entertainment industry is increasing, especially with the ongoing $8.5-billion merger between Reliance and Walt Disney’s Indian media assets. By joining forces, Apple and Airtel hope to attract more consumers in India’s price-sensitive market.

I'm definitely due for a new one. I have the first 4K version. I'm sure it's much slower than the new ones, even for just app switches. My current model definitely has some lag/delay once you close an app or open a new one.
I wonder what's the cause of this... it's not that the apps are being updated regularly, or that the tvOS experience has gotten that much crazier.

The ATV is my single most favorite Apple device I own.
I'm sure I love my iPad more, but if I had to give up my ATV I would be very sad. The updated Siri Remote is the only remote I need for anything TV-related. I have a network TV tuner and use the Channels app for when I need to watch terrestrial TV, and I programmed the IR to power my "vintage" soundbar that doesn't have HDMI, and I've never been happier.
