I've got two AppleTV 4K (2017) and even after almost 7 years they still run very very quick and smooth in daily use.
Only a few games could use more power. And HomeKit when there are lots of devices and dozens of rules, a bit more CPU could help. Other than that, still very happy with this one. Most people I know that had some other TV box, had replaced them at least twice already.

I'm in for an AppleTV 4K 2024, but only if it is a sure boost in performance with raytracing for games, while keeping the power consumption very low. The AppleTV 4K 2017 barely consumes 4W while in use - that's important too.

If I had to guess new model for next year with standard iPhone 16 chip (A18). Current one has A15 and the one before A12 so from a chip evolution perspective make sense and A18 allows to put Apple Intelligence on AppleTV.

It would be great if it could function as a local Apple Intelligence server/hub to assist older devices with Siri, like the current HomePod mini's.

I still have the 4th gen HD Apple TV, and it's still working great for my needs. I want to get a 4K Apple TV with FaceTime support and Thread eventually, but I have been waiting for a new Apple TV at this point, but I also don't have a 4K TV yet. :p

Having just bought my first TV (ever), I went all out and got an LG G4 55" OLED. Within a few hours of disliking the interface delays I plugged my older 1st gen 4k Apple TV in and it was already so much smoother and more pleasant than the LG interface. When you click or slide through icons and menus and buttons everything is instant...the LG has a nasty half second delay. So much for their "much faster" a11 processor in there. Quite disappointing.

You would definitely think they'd push a bit more investment in the Apple TV, especially with all this content they're ramming money in. My first gen 4K one feels a bit slow now, but still way faster than my newish Samsung tv's built in apps.

Ironically I rarely use my Apple TVs for actually watching Apple TV+ these days now that so many of my primary viewing devices (e.g. TVs, set-top boxes) have the app baked-in. They tend to serve primarily as Home hubs and for Plex.

... has expired 🤣

Why sugarcoat it? Just say he was wrong. Again.

I welcome a lower price. I also would like to see Apple offer an Apple TV without storage for around $50 to compete against Roku devices and Amazon Fire sticks. Great for those who just want to stream (not purchase) content and don't want to be tracked.
An Apple TV without storage literally wouldn’t work. All streaming devices require storage. The cost of storage in an Apple TV is practically nothing anyways.

All modern smart TV is so slow compare to Apple TV and they get stopped supported pretty quickly too. I never use any apps on smart TV in living room. My mum very recently get new smart TV for kitchen that uses Roku OS and it not too bad actually, pretty basic cheap small TV but it lot easier and simple for non-tech clueless person to use it and my mum can't even use living room TV and need rely on Dad or me to use it.

I gave up on Apple TV years ago. The remote drove me crazy. Get a Roku you won’t be disappointed. Real remote, half the price, equal or better functionality.

I do prefer the Roku interface but they are very chatty. My Firewalla blocks all the tracking, telemetry and advertisements, though.

It depends what Apple has envisioned for the device. There is nothing wrong with the current model and with the A15 chip still needed for the iPad Mini, iPhone 14 & iPhone SE (plus the iPhone 13s Apple is likely still producing on the down-low for developing markets) they don't need to replace the current unit.

I can see a gaming model coming out with an M4 or M2 Pro chip (and large price bump) - the M4 seems to be maintain 30 fps in the latest AAA games like Assassins Creed and the NPU/AI features suggest this would be more likely than an M2 Pro which is likely still more expensive and dropping out of production.

I can also see Apple solving their smart speaker AI issue by releasing a "home hub" version with an A18 chip (and moderate price bump) - Homepods and Homepod Minis could hand off their Apple Intelligence requests to the Apple TV to make use of the new, smarter Siri. They could complement this with an A18-based HomePod that any Homepod Minis could also hand-off requests to.

Whether Apple wants to do any of these things remains to be seen

I would like a high end Apple TV model that has larger storage, more RAM, and active cooling, and would be willing to pay more to get it. The thermal throttling of the A15 in the ATV4K3 is insane.

With smart tv's having every streaming app available (including Apple TV+), what is the point of an Apple TV nowadays?
Short answer, there is a lot more to the Apple TV 4K than streaming apps, Apple TV+, and the Apple TV app.

Seems like there is a weekly new thread posting asking this question, and I blame Apple for not advertising their Apple TV HW enough. If the ATV got a fraction of the advertising that ATV+ gets, I bet it would sell more.

Actually, if Apple would have just had a better naming convention, this would probably help a lot. Many people do not know the difference between the Apple TV, Apple TV+, and Apple TV app. This is probably why MR gets weekly threads asking the question that you did.

Your 4k model feels slow? I have one too, bought a couple months after it was released in 2017 and it quick enough that I can't detect any hesitation or lag, at all. There are just a handful of streaming services installed and no games/other.

Mine regually stutters loading the screensavers and app switching. Always seems to take me back to the start of each app, like netflix, disney etc. Other than that it's great, I couldn't imagine using anything else!

Content few people want to pay for, it seems.

This could be a first for subscribers outside of the U.S. Apple is going to offer Apple TV+ and Apple Music for free to Airtel's premium subscribers.

Apple is teaming up with Bharti Airtel to offer free access to Apple TV+ and Apple Music to Airtel’s premium customers. This partnership aims to give Apple a stronger presence in India’s competitive entertainment market, which is valued at $28 billion.

Exclusive offers: Airtel Xstream customers with premium WiFi and Postpaid plans will get Apple TV+ included for free. This service offers a wide range of films, TV shows, documentaries, and kids’ content.

Apple Music access: Airtel users, especially those with Wynk Premium, will also receive exclusive offers for Apple Music. This includes access to a collection of global and Indian music, expertly curated playlists, and special features like Apple Music Sing and Spatial Audio.

This partnership is significant as it comes at a time when competition in India’s entertainment industry is increasing, especially with the ongoing $8.5-billion merger between Reliance and Walt Disney’s Indian media assets. By joining forces, Apple and Airtel hope to attract more consumers in India’s price-sensitive market.
I can't say I've ever watched anything on Apple TV+, nothing looks decent!

Apple TV is pretty much useless as it is built into most modern TV's (both my LG and Samsung have it). Not only the Apple TV app, but both TV's directly stream from my phone to the TV to show photos/videos without the need for the Apple TV device. I have 4K Apple TV's that I unhooked from our two main sets (LG/Samsung) because they are completely redundant. Only keep one on a smaller, older TV that we hardly even use and maybe use the Apple TV 1-2x per year on that TV.

It has been nearly two years since the Apple TV last received a hardware upgrade, so you may be wondering when a new model will be released.

Below, we recap rumors about the next-generation Apple TV.

In January 2023, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that a new Apple TV was on track for release in the first half of 2024:The first half of 2024 passed by without a new Apple TV, so that rumor has expired, and there have been no credible rumors about the device since. As such, it is currently unclear when the next Apple TV will be released.

Apple recently announced that it will be holding a special event on September 9, but the only products firmly rumored to be unveiled then include new iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods, with no expectation of a new Apple TV so far.

Here is when the previous five Apple TV models were announced:

  • Third-generation Apple TV 4K: October 2022
  • Second-generation Apple TV 4K: April 2021
  • First-generation Apple TV 4K: September 2017
  • Apple TV HD: September 2015
  • Third-generation Apple TV: March 2012

Whenever it comes out, the next Apple TV is rumored to feature a faster processor than the current A15 Bionic chip, and even lower pricing. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the next Apple TV could have a sub-$100 starting price. The current Apple TV starts at $129 in the U.S. with 64GB of storage, and a 128GB model is available for $149.

Both the second-generation (2010) and third-generation (2012) models of the Apple TV were priced at $99 in the U.S. at launch, and Apple eventually lowered the price of the third-generation model to $69, so there is precedent for a sub-$100 Apple TV that would better compete with low-priced streaming devices sold by the likes of Amazon and Roku.

No major design changes have been rumored for the next Apple TV specifically, but Gurman said Apple has considered adding a built-in camera to a future model. tvOS 17 added a FaceTime app to the Apple TV, allowing for users to have video calls by using the rear camera on a connected iPhone or iPad. If the Apple TV gained a built-in camera, users would no longer need to rely on an external device for video calls on the TV.

It is amazing that Apple needs years to upgrade 3 computers, 2 laptops, iPads and Apple TV box. Most of these share the same design for many years and so on. apple products are fantastic and I have owned lots of them, so I not complaining . just curious to understand what it takes to produce an updated Mac Pro.

You shouldn't get one, I just buy them for no reason.
We have a 4k ATV from years ago, I don't think we use it anymore as our newer tv's have all the apps built in for streaming. Does it do something else besides streaming tv and movies?

I would like a high end Apple TV model that has larger storage, more RAM, and active cooling, and would be willing to pay more to get it.
That reminded me that my first Mac purchase was the first Intel Mac mini in the mid-2000's which I bought to use as a media player for my TV. I played rented DVD's and used Front Row for iTunes content. I liked the Mac enough that I replaced my Windows laptop with a white plastic MacBook.

I think Apple is looking at an Apple TV that might even use the A18 SoC, of all things. It'll be quite a bit faster and it might even support Apple Intelligence features, too.
Or it uses that odd 8/8 core M4 variation that has been tested in some unannounced Macs article? But with our luck it's used in a future Apple Studio display not a future ATV? :D
The fourth machine has an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU, which is not an M4 configuration that we've seen so far.

Those TVs go out of date in a while. Our Apple TV 4k is hooked up to a several years old Samsung smart tv that can't even login to some streaming apps because the app, or certificate, or both, are of date and aren't being updated.
