I played rented DVD's and used Front Row for iTunes content.
Front Row was pretty cool, and I was sad to see it removed. I used it with my Mac Mini G4.

Would love to see a new version of Front Row, basically a way to activate tvOS within MacOS. I would buy another AS Mac Mini today if this was a thing, and replace my main ATV with it.

It has been nearly two years since the Apple TV last received a hardware upgrade, so you may be wondering when a new model will be released.

Below, we recap rumors about the next-generation Apple TV.

In January 2023, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that a new Apple TV was on track for release in the first half of 2024:The first half of 2024 passed by without a new Apple TV, so that rumor has expired, and there have been no credible rumors about the device since. As such, it is currently unclear when the next Apple TV will be released.

Apple recently announced that it will be holding a special event on September 9, but the only products firmly rumored to be unveiled then include new iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods, with no expectation of a new Apple TV so far.

Here is when the previous five Apple TV models were announced:

  • Third-generation Apple TV 4K: October 2022
  • Second-generation Apple TV 4K: April 2021
  • First-generation Apple TV 4K: September 2017
  • Apple TV HD: September 2015
  • Third-generation Apple TV: March 2012

Whenever it comes out, the next Apple TV is rumored to feature a faster processor than the current A15 Bionic chip, and even lower pricing. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the next Apple TV could have a sub-$100 starting price. The current Apple TV starts at $129 in the U.S. with 64GB of storage, and a 128GB model is available for $149.

Both the second-generation (2010) and third-generation (2012) models of the Apple TV were priced at $99 in the U.S. at launch, and Apple eventually lowered the price of the third-generation model to $69, so there is precedent for a sub-$100 Apple TV that would better compete with low-priced streaming devices sold by the likes of Amazon and Roku.

No major design changes have been rumored for the next Apple TV specifically, but Gurman said Apple has considered adding a built-in camera to a future model. tvOS 17 added a FaceTime app to the Apple TV, allowing for users to have video calls by using the rear camera on a connected iPhone or iPad. If the Apple TV gained a built-in camera, users would no longer need to rely on an external device for video calls on the TV.

How about the "new M4 Mac Mini" ?

Those TVs go out of date in a while. Our Apple TV 4k is hooked up to a several years old Samsung smart tv that can't even login to some streaming apps because the app, or certificate, or both, are of date and aren't being updated.
Great example, Samsung could care less if their TV apps environment can't be updated in some ways sometime in the future, just buy a newer TV. The ATV4K is always available for working around those issues. :)

Their software sucks, its extremely laggy, very invasive and obnoxious. Using an on screen keyboard is horrible compared to siri or your phone. I could go on and on.
Agreed and also another important feature of Apple TV is accessibility like subtitles and close captioning. My sister smart TV have BBC iPlayer app and subtitles are half off screen! Totally unusable! Lot of apps don't have subtitles. Apple TV have subtitles mostly (apart from BBC iPlayer, looking at you BBC!!!). I have Roku just for BBC iPlayer and Apple TV for everything else.

It would be so easy for Apple to jump into the video game console market with a modified Apple TV and a new controller. And purchasing a major studio like EA.

One of these things is not like the other.

An Apple TV without storage literally wouldn’t work. All streaming devices require storage.
Yes, I'm aware all streaming devices have a small amount of storage space for the OS and the streaming service apps and stuff, but I was referring specifically to the storage space used to store purchased media content. I guess I wasn't clear enough when I wrote

"I also would like to see Apple offer an Apple TV without storage for around $50 to compete against Roku devices and Amazon Fire sticks. Great for those who just want to stream (not purchase) content"

The cost of storage in an Apple TV is practically nothing anyways.
Are we talking about the same Apple that charges $200 for 256GB of storage on a Mac? That's $100 per 128GB.

Remove the 128GB storage from the Apple TV 4K which is priced at $149 and you get a $49 Apple TV.

I still have the 4th gen HD Apple TV, and it's still working great for my needs. I want to get a 4K Apple TV with FaceTime support and Thread eventually, but I have been waiting for a new Apple TV at this point, but I also don't have a 4K TV yet. :p
Exactly the same situation I am in - Apple TV 4th gen still going strong for watching TV on demand and light gaming. Not sure what benefits I would get from a newer model.

Yep, bought one based on the over the top recommendations here on MacRumors and then after the 3 month trial there was nothing left to watch. Now it just sits in the corner, probably about the same state as my Apple car.

Not sure I can take much more of Cook's innovations.

We have a 4k ATV from years ago, I don't think we use it anymore as our newer tv's have all the apps built in for streaming. Does it do something else besides streaming tv and movies?
You have a 4K which has the latest OS. They're a vastly better, less stuttery, less ad intrusive experience than other streaming devices. Works nicely with other Apple devices, awesome aerial screensavers. If none of that matters to you and your one qualification is "play content" then you're not the customer they're seeking, but apparently interested enough to engage on this thread.

You do realize the Apple TV is more than just a box that plays Apple TV+ content right? Twitch, YouTube, Hulu, HomeKit compatibility, AirPlay, and games can all be done with it too.

With smart tv's having every streaming app available (including Apple TV+), what is the point of an Apple TV nowadays?
Most of them are keeping a record and sending it to the company of everything you watch: https://www.consumerreports.org/ele...n-off-smart-tv-snooping-features-a4840102036/

There can also be so many ads. Using something like Pi-hole helps, but it usually won't catch everything without breaking some features.

I block my main TV from accessing the internet and use an Apple TV. There are some ads in the form of suggested shows or movies, but there is much less data snooping. I still filter ads at a network level though and it blocks some outbound traffic from the Apple TV.

I mean, why does this still exist ?
Because it is

  • superior to every other streaming product on the market
  • has excellent picture quality, including 4k Dolby Vision
  • destroys the garbage UIs and performance of native television apps
  • receives regular app updates, whereas the television apps are abandoned by developers
  • excellent value for money, including a great remote and consistently fast, trouble-free performance

Will it have 16gb of RAM?
Will it have more ways to watch Netflix and Hulu YouTube?
oh conflicted. :)

I use them to keep the TV from spying. My TVs cannot talk to the intarwebz. Furthermore, TVs use lowest common denominator processors and apps that quickly show age or lose support. I’d rather replace an aging Apple TV vs the whole TV.
