XS 799
XS Max 899
Base 128 GB
256 GB - 100 extra
512 GB - Additional 100 extra
AC+ onwards of 149

XR 599
XR Mini 5.1” 499
Base 64 GB
128 GB - 50 extra
256 GB - Additional 100 extra
AC+ onwards of 99
While I agree prices should be lower, The XR is not a $599 phone. Judging by what's under the hood, it's a flagship phone by every metric. The LCD, while not OLED or HD, is literally a fantastic display with many positives. It's more powerful and has a better camera than basically everything else on the market barring a few of the nearly $1000 Android phones.

You both are talking about same thing - price elasticity, aakshey believes that iphone buyers have high price elasticity, you believe that they have low price elasticity.... only apple knows

Why wait five years? Talk now.

Unit sales are flat because users are seeing less benefit from spending money upgrading frequently. Apple anticipated that and put in place a strategy of having a premium tier with a premium price. Result? While unit sales are flat, revenues and profits are up.

But you have a better idea. Let’s wipe out the extra revenue with price cuts to 2013 levels.

£599 is still £599 that the average consumer who has an iPhone 7/8 that perfectly meets their needs doesn’t need to spend.
Yeah I know a lot of people with iPhone 7s and don’t upgrade cause their phone works fine, as well as the current prices.

I’m also planning on keeping my current max for a few years.

I was in the Apple Store yesterday having my X replaced and had to kill some time after picking it up due to I paid $4 for 1 hour of parking. I played around with the XS Max and XR and definitely could tell how large the bezels are on the XR. It took so much out of me not to upgrade to the XS Max and keep my almost paid off X. I do hope Apple keep the same look of the XS Max next year and change to the way the new iPads look. I hated the look of the 5S.

do you think Apple will rethink their strategy and due a new design change just to jump start sluggish sales and make up for lost ground?

There are at least 2-3 designs in different stages of design. The sluggish sales may cause some elements to come out sooner, an in bedded touch ID is rumored to be one of them that will come to market.

Serves those greedy mofos right.

If there was anything I wouldn’t believe, it’s definitely not Touch ID under the display. I don’t mean to be rude, but how times has it been discussed that Apple mentioned that they already experimented with Touch ID under the display and they abandoned it for Face ID. Which, Cook said Face ID is the future for Apple, which I suspect for at least another three years at minimum, now that it just made its debut on the iPad Pro.

Well, OnePlus is doing this now so it's definitely possible.

However, it's worth mentioning again: there's no reason to have both FaceID and TouchID simultaneously. That's not real two factor authentication.

Possible? Sure. But I don’t believe it’s in Apple’s future itinerary. My own thoughts, I think the biggest potential drawback to a fingerprint reader under the display is inaccuracy rates with screen protectors. But I personally would like to field test this technology to make a better judgement. For the record, I’m completely open to options with biometric security, I just don’t think it’s in Apple’s future currently.

That's honestly the problem. There's too little change year to year with phones too expensive. I wish the hardware cycle was every other year at the earliest. As lean as iOS is, there's no need to do hardware every year. .

In my opinion the problem with an every 2 year routine is the changing technology. They missed B71 in 2017, so if they had waited until 2019, that would be hurting many people longer.

At least coming out with the Xr rather than just reducing the price of the last year's X is that they got a "mid range" iPhone out there with B71 support. The still available 8 wouldn't be a great choice on T-Mobile.

There is also B14 on ATT that is less critical.

Getting the eSIM compatible phones out now might not mean as much this year, but it is at least priming the market.

Since I'm staying with either the ATT network or the Verizon network for at least another year, I stayed with my X. But the X was the version that broke my every other year routine with iPhones. But that was because the 7+ was larger than I really liked carrying everyday.

You get what you pay for.

Compared to what? Smart phones are generally fairly close in competition in hardware now. It’s the software experience the user commits to. iOS or Android is the main threshold. The XS isn’t _that_ much superior over the XR from my viewpoint, they are both very comparable. The XS has the OLED panel, stainless bands and telephoto lens, I really don’t see those three factors persuading the XR owners to spend $250.00 more for those features. (And for the record, I own the XS Max, which I’m trying to show an equal balance. )

Love my SE
Make something smaller than the XS and I’ll buy again, but not until then.

Yeah, the “you get what you pay for” scenario just flat out doesn’t work here. What I value in a device is probably not what the next person will value, and so on.

How many folks are paying the premium that comes with the stainless steel bands, all while immediately slapping a case over the phone?

No.

They will increase the price to keep margins high to deal with lower sales. They know people will continue to buy buy buy.

I don’t think the design is the cause of sluggish sales. It is the price. People are getting tired of shelling out a grand each year for a new phone or paying $50 additional a month on their cell bill. People are wising up and passing on the latest and greatest.
