Craig Federighi clearly said multiple times in BOLD that Apple will never merge macOS & iPadOS. I think the same goes for hybrid devices.

If it is an iPad, I most certainly will not be buying it, but if a mac I most likely would.

A foldable phone makes sense to be an iPad mini size when opened.
A foldable iPad to be 18" makes no sense whatsoever.

Touch Bar never got the love and improvements it deserved. Without haptic feedback etc. it was never going to be a good replacement for function row keys and for that I'm glad it's gone and I have my real escape key back (I unfortunately bought the first Touch Bar MacBook Pro in 2016). That said, I've aways wondered how far they went with testing a solid-state haptic trackpad with screen. That always seemed like a very flexible space and today's MacBook trackpads and Magic Trackpad are large. They could display all kinds of controls, pencil writing, etc.

I see Apple got inspired by the "gigantic success of touchbar". If it's an ipad, then fine, some people will buy it, but not me. But if they change macos in harmful ways to accomodate this device, then it could be the biggest fcukup in apple's history.

Either make an iPad mini which unfolds to twice the size or make an iPhone which unfolds to iPad mini size. But I doubt they will solve the display issues

"Is it iPad or a Mac, not it's just another crap" :))))))

in my opinion, apple should stop making this crap and concentrate on shipping features they promise, i'm tired of listening that they'll do this and that, feature this, feature that and then - not gonna happen this year, maybe next year, maybe never, postponed this, postponed that... iOS miles behind android, mac os forgotten.. macOs messages a great example on complete crap of software as if none of apple devs/management ever used another messaging app which actually works and is fast as f.

I wish "they" would stop referring to display-based keyboards as "virtual" keyboards, and call them something like "glass keyboards" instead, since a virtual keyboard is technically something that floats in virtual space when you're using a VR headset, goggles, or glasses.
What about virtual meetings?

Expecting two devices, a foldable iPhone with a larger screen like the size of iPad mini when unfolded (just like the Z Fold from Samsung) and another device that is a hybrid iPad/Mac that may run macOS. Expecting the foldable iPhone to launch first. Both devices will be very expensive.

ipados and all it's apps/features are designed for touch input.
macos is not (though there's no real restriction as to why)
For that reason alone i can't see why it wouldn't be a giant ipad.
MacOS isn’t touchable because there isn’t a market for it beyond novelty.

When you’re in your workflow, keyboard and trackpad all on fire, the last thing you really want is to lift your arm up and sully the screen with fingerprints.

It represents a real physical effort. It’s been possible on laptops for ten years almost. People rarely use it.

In recent years, car manufacturers have begun to realise that the physicality of buttons and switches are more desirable than the 2D representation and its associated limitations on a screen. It’s just one of the reasons I bought an Air to replace an iPad. I just can’t use an iPad for serious work.

I think more likely it will be just iPadOS and they’ll make it as thin and light as possible.

But MAYBE it will be beefier and run macOS and maybe have some new interface to use iPad apps on the folded screen (all via macOS—no iPadOS, no dual boot). It would have to come packaged with a keyboard case/stand though. I don’t see many people wanting to hold a 19” device.

But I don’t know, this device is just puzzling. For one thing, why so big? I would think a medium size 9-10” tablet that unfolds into a 14-16” device would make more sense. Isn’t 19” way overkill for most people?

It will be wathever Tim thinks they could gain more money without taking sales from actual products.

My dream device would be iPad mini sized closed (but with a screen that still works), opens to a larger iPad (13" preferably) and can be used on a MK and has extended screen support. (M4 specs ie dual OLED etc). With a desktop class browser and no camera bump.

I think the most benefit from foldability is to have a phone-sized device that's always in your pocket which can also be an iPad-sized device. Having a folding Mac would not really make it more portable, it would just introduce an extra interface and weird vertical screen that's worse than a keyboard. Huge iPads aren't that popular either because holding something so large isn't practical. If you're going to be putting it on a table anyway then might as well be a full laptop.

I think Phone to iPad makes the most sense. Or small iPad to medium iPad.
