I don't really like that name (ipad) but I'm sure I will get used to calling it whatever they name it.

not sure

I think Apple pattens all names so no other company can use them. They really missed "iHome" few years ago to some iPod Speaker company. And don't think iNames are old fashion, they are signature of Apple and will be remembered for hundred of years.

Damn, where is THIS last month? CES would be so much more entertaining with all the knockoff products made as result of rumored Apple devices.

iPad iPod can be homonyms

In some languages, iPod and iPad would be very close to being homonyms. I doubt that is going to be the name. Apple is probably not going to manufacture an iMoc or an iFame, either.

Some time ago, they had to change the name of Dulles Airport to Washington Dulles Airport because in many languages, Dulles and Dallas are pronounced the same, and people were ending up in the wrong city. iPod and iPad would cause the same confusion.

iNewton? iDunno? iDea Pad? iDiot? My guess is that they are just registering a bunch of obvious "i" names to protect them from someone coming out with a knock-off called an iPad. When Coca-Cola first came out it had a lot of imitators... one of which was named Koca-Nola.

Honey Can you drive down to Walmart and buy me some iPads..... i dont think so

I don't like iPad... I'd be a little more proud to say i have a iSlate, iTablet, iReader or something other than iPad. If it is iPad i'm sure SNL will have a great skit to go with it.

Well, the very best reason *not* to call it an iSlate is Ballmer calling them Slate PCs, so it already infers dullness and lack of innovation.

If the iPad is true then Apple might discontinue the iPod. They've already have said the iTouch and iPhone are cannibalizing it. Then people will not confuse iPod/iPad.

I'm not convinced by any of the main contenders so far:

  • iPad - sounds like a feminine hygiene product
  • iSlate - in the UK, 'slate' is also a verb meaning 'to strongly criticise'; does it have this connotation in the US too?
  • iTablet/Tablet - a bit dull, though acceptable and 'obvious'

I hope Apple does something creative with the name, rather than its typical generic approach of late (eg iPod, iPhone). There are several key examples of Apple products with more unusual names:

  • Lisa
  • Newton
  • Macintosh

Let's have a nod to the 'crazy ones' and go for something a bit more inventive this time, Apple!

pure guess going on the 7" & 10" screen rumors.

ipad = 7" touchscreen device
islate = 10" touchscreen device

I'm not sure what is more concerning: having to buy iPads or finding out that she isLate. Just put it on my iTab and let me drown my sorrows either way; iBoard with all these '90s iNames.

I said it would be iPad ages ago

Ha. Vindication (maybe) at last...

Awfully close to "iPod", true. But a little confusion among two names both owned by Apple is not the end of the world. And iPod growth has tapered off anyway. This is a fairly good strategy to build one growing brand on top of another brand which has peaked (and probably declined, in terms of sales if not recognition). At least, I don't see how they lose sales due to confusion.

As far as "iSlate" is concerned: An "iSlate" is what Barney Rubble takes to work. The Newton, in fact, looked and felt like an "iSlate". 'nuff said.

MaxiPad would actually be a better name.

That will be the name for the larger unit.

Seriously though, if they go with iPad, it will result in the products immediately becoming a joke. It will be fodder for every comedian, radio morning show host and anti-Apple zealots.

Why be coy, why not just call it iSanitaryNapkin. Save everyone the time of making up new innuendoes.
