You think iPod is a typical generic name? I certainly don't.

Not exactly, but just the 'pod' part. In fact, that's why I like 'iPod' so much - 'pod' is generic in that it can be applied to just about anything you want to carry around in your pocket. Similarly, the 'phone' part of 'iPhone'. The sheer audacity of a calling a phone, Phone, was incredible. Don't get me wrong, I like 'iPod' and 'iPhone' as names. They have both worked brilliantly. But this time there is no obvious contender apart from Tablet, which is possibly too long and a bit dull (in my opinion). So, I hope Apple does what it has done a few times before, and come out with a totally unexpected name - perhaps with resonance to a 'crazy one'. Someone said 'Picasso' after seeing Apple's event invitation - I kind of like that.

What in the hell is an iPod? Anybody from 2000 know?

What in the hell is a/n [insert tablet name here]? Anybody from 2010 know?

Point being: Apple could invent a new name and call it whatever they want. As long as it is revolutionary and everyone loves them, the name will be known throughout the world and Apple will make billions. I remember people back then making fun of the iPod name. If you think about it, it's a really risky, weird name. Good thing the product delivered and changed entire industries or it would probably be on the list of worst product name blunders of all time.

That will be the name for the larger unit.

Seriously though, if they go with iPad, it will result in the products immediately becoming a joke. It will be fodder for every comedian, radio morning show host and anti-Apple zealots.

Why be coy, why not just call it iSanitaryNapkin. Save everyone the time of making up new innuendoes.

Evryone said the same about the 'Wii' when the name was released. People got over it.

Maybe iPad is the name of a fancy multitouch note/sketch/drawing application for the ... Tablet. ?

You run iMovie on your iMac... you run iPad on your iSlate ;)

I like what you're saying about innovative names, but there's something to be said for consistency across product lines too. Eg: all Apple's computers now have Mac in their name, all their products that go in your pocket start with i.

I'm positive it's called iPad. 100%

Today those of us in web services at apple got to see first hand when they added an internal .htaccess to the webserver so apple.com/ipad would resolve internally. They didn't put anything up, just the .htaccess file so internally you see a error of directory listing denied.

Was ordered up this morning.

iPad might be a fine name IF not for the iPod. They sound way too similar.

Now, if the tablet does end up running something very close to the iPhone OS, it might be possible they'd brand it as a new iPod model (iPod Pro? iPod Newton? ;)). I'm guessing not, but wouldn't rule it out entirely.

What is Picasso at all about the invitation? More like Action Painting, which was a subset of the Abstract Expressionist movement in the early to mid 20th century. Now Jackson Pollock was a crazy one. The iPollock? Hah. Although the application of the "paint" on the invite seems a bit more fine / evenly sprayed, which makes it seem a bit more contemporary, like a street graffiti work.

Definitely not iSlate!

iPad does sound like a tampon but after you say it over and over again it loses all meaning anyways. For those who say it sounds too similar to iPod so what?! The iPod is a success and for it sound like it is a good thing.

got to agree that iPad doesn't work. So any competitor wanting to copy the Driod ads will cast us as iPhone and iPad wearing princesses.

i guess i should get over it and be more secure in my masculinity, probably get more chicks that way. ;)

Any way i like mac pad better - doh - that sounds like maxi pad and i just don't have the balls to use one of those. :p:p

Yes I think you're right that there has always been a deliberate attempt there by Apple. So the introduction of the 'MacBook Pro' was unexpected but all made sense a few months later by the later introduction of the 'MacBook'. However on this occasion it seems Apple may be looking to redefine the whole computing experience, in which case I would not be surprised if they create a leapfrog name to match a leapfrog product.

Leapfrog! That's the new product's name! ;) :D :p

iPad will not be the new name of the device. I think primarily they just want to make sure no one else uses it either.

I like the name Canvas (not mine, credit to whoever came up with it, although I can't remember their username), but that sounds pretty much perfect for this type of device.

You got me there. It was a pretty loose connection. But in any case I have a better idea for the new product:

  • iGiveUp
:)

iPad sounds a lot smoother than iSlate.

I agree, a Pad would be smoother than a slate, maybe it's an iPud which is squishier than a pad but softer than a slate... or an iPid which is more serene and less tangy than a pud or a pod or slate...

Also for interest to support the detective work in this article is that the same law firm which Apple has recently been using in Australia for other intellectual property issues, are named as the contact people for the iPad name registration in Australia.

Whatever it's called, Gizmodo is giving one away if you can guess the specs. More info HERE.

Too bad they didn't manage to really cover the possibilities well. I suspect most of the questions will be nullified and it will end up being a glorified draw. :(

64 GB for the largest capacity? What were they thinking? The next iPhone will likely be 64 GB, the chips already exist.

Don't normally play the speculation game but this one just came to me as I was scrolling the posts...

"Scribe"

or the "iScribe" for the "i" people.

THough maybe it's too much focused on writing then....

I know that others and myself have said this before, but why not iBook? I mean, it fits, it's easy to say and remember, it's basic, and Apple already has all the trademarks on it? Perfect surprise name!! From their own vault. Perhaps to throw off the industry?

It'll probably go the way of the G4 Cube, they'll have plenty to give away then... oh hang on it'll be too expensive to buy...
