iPad doesn't sounds like a very good name...

I still like iSlate better!

I hope Apple does something creative with the name, rather than its typical generic approach of late (eg iPod, iPhone). There are several key examples of Apple products with more unusual names:

  • Lisa
  • Newton
  • Macintosh

Let's have a nod to the 'crazy ones' and go for something a bit more inventive this time, Apple!

You think iPod is a typical generic name? I certainly don't.

I'm going with the Apple Reader. Yes, it will do much more then be used for reading, but there is precedent with the iPhone that is obviously much more then a phone.

If Apple can't come to an agreement for the use of iPad in the U.S., maybe it will just use two different names for the same device.

Apple already does this with the "Airport Express" which only has that name in the United States. Everywhere else in the world it's the "AirMac."

iPad would make a better name for a gamepad for the iPhone/iPod touch... But of course, that is likely a pipe dream. I think they are just gobbling up names to protect themselves from imitators.

People always talk about the "mac" and "i" naming conventions, but why not "Apple". Apple tv does exist, so there is precedent. The "Apple Slate" perhaps?

Edit: To be more clear. The iPod touch uses two 32 GB chips, and the current iPhone uses one 32 GB chip. 64 GB chips are out now, so it is reasonable to expect that the next iPhone would use one 64 GB chip and the iPod touch would use two for a total of 128 GB. Apparently Gizmodo thinks the next generation iPod touch will have more capacity than this tablet.

Looks like it will iPad. I like that name much better than iSlate or other names that have been suggested for possible use.

Having it so similar to iPod make sense, and helps leverage Apple's famous brand, to keep brand loyalty, while making a play on name recognition.

I can already tell you they won't use it, Macs iPad would surely come into trademark dispute with MaxiPad

LOL!

But seriously, the relation between the first letters of IP Application Departement and iPad doesn't mean much imo since a real company by that name could register its abreviation....

Exactly what i thought, would hate this name.

so whenever someone says "pad" you think female hygiene? thats a little odd..

dude: can i have a pad to write down the number...
other dude: dude..ew..thats gross man...i dont got any pads..I aint no girl

?

iPad may sound like iPod...

....but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It still marks it as part of the iPod family.

And for the geeky, it's close to Star Trek's PADD (Personal Access Display Device).
