NOT with software.

I'm not sure if that's true. I've used my educational discount in the San Francisco store (or was it Emeryville?) on Creative Suite and Final Cut Express. That might be an exception to the rule, but since there are fliers that say you can use your educational discount in-store and I don't recall any "no software" disclaimers," so I guess it depends on which store we're talking about.

I am looking forward to my school taking pre-orders at a very reduced rate like they did with Panther. I got my copy for $29. They had an Apple night at the university computer store the night it was released with pizza and soda and one of the school's first G5s for us to mess with. Wow, I really am a dork, looking forward to events like this. :D
My school doesn't sell Mac OS (anything) at all, even though it does sell Mac software :(
In the end it doesn't matter, since after this year I will no longer be eligible for the educational discount (unless I continue college).

I don't think that purchasing Tiger at the instant it is released is really the best choise... I think I will wait until it reaches a decent version number (10.4.3 and above) and then I will purchase it. I can't risk haveing problems with my installed programs.

If I was in your situation, I wouldn't judge by the version number alone. I would make the purchase decision based on reports of existing bugs and bugs fixed in the most recent release. That way, you don't end up waiting too long (it's quite possible that 10.4.1 will be enough) or getting stung by a bad release (10.4.3 could end up being more buggy than 10.4.0 was).

I've tried a couple of times to use it for software at the Apple Store in Clarendon, VA, and they never let me. Perhaps there has been a change.

Our distribution center is in Lancaster, PA, so I get everything the next day, and aside from a major jardware purchase, I order it.... ;)

and Apple delivers it to my door the hours before it goes on sale in the stores, sometimes you'll be lucky enough to get a day before it is released.

Given Apple UK's delivery tendencies - and that Panther didn't ship as promised to arrive on the right day for may - I suspect I'll go for my second jaunt queuing at the Apple Store. Who knows - perhaps they'll tie it into Bluewater/Birmingham openings and can kill two birds with one stone!

Alternatively, I wait 2 or 3 weeks and get 12% off at work with my employees discount when it arrives there.

Yaaarggg...I've got me Panther dog tags hangin' above me monitor right at this moment.
I'll be waitin' in line at the Chicago Apple Store like a good laddie on the release date.

I still have two or three in the plastic. I assume they are worth....nothng! :D

Only if the box is marked with the label education, like office.

Apple does not sell any of their education priced software at a retail store.

being from the Uk, do you know how much educational discount i would get of tiger? thanks!

I've never camped out for an Apple release, so I think I'll head over to the Towson store for Tiger, and pick up iLife 05 at the same time.
I camped overnight for my PS2, and plan to do the same for the PSP. My wife says I am a geek, which is probably why I love her...she knows me very well.

I almost never preorder anything. I mean, there will be tons of copies in the store when opening day comes. Why bother?
I will be pre-ordering. I will also probably try to get to the store on release day.

The reason to pre-order is what happens if you can't get to the store for some reason during the release?

I'll be ordering a family pack for home, but I'm also waiting to buy a G5 when it starts shipping preinstalled.
If you're getting a family pack, that's not a good reason to wait on the G5. Also, unless new models are announced after Tiger is released, the current models may come with Panther on the hardrive and a Tiger upgrade kit tossed into the box.

If someone was a one machine person and was replacing their system, I could see waiting for that reason.

My suggestion for you is that since you're waiting anyway, order when the G% (iMac of Powermac) is next updated. The current imacs are over 6 months old and will probably be updated within the next few months and the current Powermacs are abot 9 months old and should be updated soon hopefully. At this point I'd hate to buy either of those and have an update announced 3 weeks later. Especially if my old machine is still working fine.

I'd love to go to the Regent Street Apple Store for the UK's first Mac OS release party... so I probably will! Maybe pick up an iMac whilst i'm there :p (What are student loans for, eh?)

The only reasons I'd not want to buy Tiger straight off are:
1. Education discount?
2. New mac wouldn't have it on
3. Initial Bugs?

I'd love to believe there'll be no bugs on release, but as much as I love Apple...

i'm going to the store and buying it with ilife 05. will they install for me if i asked them to becuase i was thinking of upgrade to the 100 Gig hard drive through apple and having the old one as an external one (any one if this scan be done)

i pre-ordered my copy today with my edu discount. my closest apple store is somewhere close to 300 miles away (Plano, Texas). the only thing left for me to pick up will be iLife 05 (from ebay probably) and maybe iWork... who knows...

I pre-ordered mine this morning, just checked the status :D

It says it will be delivered on or before 4/28/2005!! When I pre-ordered Panther I got it a whole two days before the actual launch date, hope the same thing happens!

Amazon.com estimates that the family pack will ship June 20 to June 22. I expect it will actually be much sooner, but that they didn't know (or weren't able to say) the real date when they created the product listing.
