People having a go at will.i.am. First ask yourself, what have you ever created or done with your life? This guy has done a lot of charity work in the tech field.
And so what? Charity work is nice. I'm sure Will is a nice guy. As for "creative," that's very subjective, don't you think? I don't think his music is particularly creative, interesting, challenging, or unique, but neither is 95% of the rest of the music out there. He just happens to make himself a target by doing ridiculous stuff like this. If he just did charity work, it would be admirable on its own merit. But doing things like this camera case and paired with a photo hosting service vainly named after him is just asking for the criticism. He seems like a terribly self-centered guy despite his charitable nature (you can be that way, you know - the charity efforts are a great way to get people to keep paying attention to you rather than it being something you do out of the goodness of your heart.)

Just like the Black Eyed Keys music... this thing is obnoxious, poorly executed, and aimed only at drone consumers. Should be perfect for their fans.

What a piece of garbage. Looks like his skills as a product designer match his skills as a musician.

My first response to these products is: hahaha :D

So ridiculously funny I've not laughed this much in a while thanks Will.

The C.4/V.4 versions use the existing iPhone camera and contain interchangeable lenses for standard, fish-eye, and zoom photo capabilities, while the more advanced C.5/V.5 models for the iPhone 5 that will come with a dedicated 14-megapixel sensor and flash won't launch until next year.

Wow - they re-invented the Kodak Disc Camera!!!

Maybe a camera with a decent (i.e. large) optical zoom lens and large (= more sensitive/lower noise) sensor, into which you plug your smartphone to act as retina display, photo browser/editor/storage would make sense.

But that would look like either a DSLR with some standard lens mount, a "bridge" camera with a big general-purpose zoom lens or at least a decent travel zoom...

No one in their right mind wouldn't even think about buying this.

With that being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see people with this.

Finally!

Steve Jobs move over! Finally someone has taken my sleek and slim iPhone, encased it in a Kodak Instamatic case adorned with gold colored plastic trim. I've been waiting for this all year. Now if only they can find a way to add a floppy disk to the thing it'll be perfect!

Whilst I don't like the design there is an awful lot of ill feeling around these parts for Mr i.am!!! You may not like his music or this product, but as others have said, at least he's having a go. Remember Steve Jobs was an egotistical nut job too!

The very opposite of what Steve...

...Jobs stood for.

What is sad, is the idea is sound. iOS (and other contemporary phone OSes) are great interfaces for cameras (hence the amazing Samsung Galaxy Phone - see it in real life before you say anything), and many of us who hate touch screen keyboards would LOVE a mechanical iPhone keyboard.

But as we all know, design and execution is everything and this strikes me as being targeted at a demographic who I would not wish to pass on the street past 9pm for fear of iDieing of shock at such appalling taste.

#fugly #bling

I hear he and Woz are working on an album

The show idea could be interesting, provided they are judged totally on their ideas and not some lame personality crap. But the rest is questionable. Having ideas is one thing, having good ones is another. And if this is a sign of his ideas, they aren't all winners

Well Woz and someone else have made a game so you ever know? He had some interesting ideas on interactive television like your actual phone will ring as they dial a phone in the programme and you interact with it, I think he should stick to music and these ideas, rather then design anything.

Fugly and unnecessary. Why would I pay ~200 for a device that makes my phone look like a camera? Why not just get a camera if I have to carry around a separate device?

I guess for those that want to look like a dbag AKA hipsters, its the perfect device.

What have you done with your life that makes you so much better than him?

So, if someone has accomplished more or made more money in their lives than I have, does that mean I'm not allowed to say anything negative about anything that person ever does?

Hmmm, let's see. Donald Trump took his Dad's small real estate company and grew it to become a billionaire. He has a TV show on NBC, he gets himself interviewed by virtually any media outlet he wants at any time, he has had three gorgeous model wives, and he even now sells a line of mattresses. But he's accomplished a lot more than me, so I better never make fun of his hairstyle or the fact that uses his famous name to promote mattresses, a product he knows nothing about.

How about Ronald Reagan? He was an actor with limited college education from a less than stellar institution and became a revered President of the United States, winning both elections in landslide victories. He has accomplished WAY more than any of us at MacRumors, so I'm sure none of us would ever have anything negative to say about him, right? There weren't any protestors against Reagan back in the 1980s, were there? Didn't everyone just love him and all of his ideas, simply because he accomplished more than all of us?

What about movies? Tom Hanks wrote, directed and starred in "Larry Crowne," but it only got 35% on RottenTomatoes.com, meaning 65% of critics didn't like it. But Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are both great, right? They're both much more successful then I'll ever hope to be, and I'm sure they both do more for charity than I do. I better not pass judgment on their movie then, right?

My point, if you still haven't figured it out, is that your argument does not make any sense. Someone being an accomplished musician and donating a lot to charity, does not make him immune from ever being ridiculed. In fact, being famous at all actually opens himself up to public ridicule, especially when he's trying to sell a very expensive electronic gadget for an obsolete iPhone that looks like it's made for a small subset of people who appreciate the artificial gold look...what others are calling "bling." And like Donald Trump, he's simply using his famous name and money to sell a product, not any particular knowledge of how those products are actually designed and made.

Please give us all another reason why we can't laugh at this absurd looking thing. The achievements of the man who made it do not protect him. If that were true, no one would ever criticize anything, right?

Your argument is actually that YOU like will.i.am, and you're just upset that the rest of us don't appreciate his "talents" as much as you do. Once you admit that to yourself, I think you'll feel better. But if you continue to whine about people criticizing him, then you're only going to be inviting criticism about yourself and your inability to make an argument. Instead, try to tell us all why it's a great product and why we should buy it. But will.i.am being a charitable over-achiever can't be that reason....not when he wants £299 for a monstrosity of an iPhone case for a phone I no longer own. Sorry.

....while the more advanced C.5/V.5 models for the iPhone 5 that will come with a dedicated 14-megapixel sensor and flash won't launch until next year.
Watch the iPhone 5S launch early in 2013 with a 16-megapixel sensor before this thing gets off the ground. ;)

Well it seems he really is two thousand and late.

Also if a product costs £299 without a sensor, how much will it cost WITH a sensor. You could buy....... Erm a great camera for that price.

$475 is just about DSLR territory.

Seriously ... uncool :(

Wow, I'm surprised by how overwhelmingly negative the reaction to this is. I can't tell if this is just distaste for Will.i.am, or if the gold accents on the one model really hit people that hard (I don't see it confirmed that they're plastic, but I haven't read that carefully-- at the price it would be nice if they were metal).

Don't think I'll carry one, but there's a lot of things I appreciate but don't want for myself. I'm glad to see someone thinking about the phone a little differently. The gold is a little too flashy, and the black a little too dull for me, and it's way too expensive, but I think it's a fun concept. Someone said "steampunk for iPhone"-- I kinda like that.

He'd better get a move on with his iPhone 5 version. Somebody's already cornered the iPad market:
