I'm running iOS 5 as i write this from my iPad and I can definitely say that my iPad 1 3G is NOT lagging at all... You can't compare the iPhone 3G with the iPad 1 only because they are using different processors... iOS 5 runs great on mine!

I just upgraded my 32GB iPhone 4 from iOS 4.3.5 to iOS5. It is very laggy on typing, just like the iPhone 3GS was with the iOS4. Can't wait to pick up the 4S and get my texting back up to speed...

Yes, iPhone 4 32GB is driving me crazy with the lag. It is about maybe 1/10th of a second lag, just enough to ruin my typing rhythm.

HOWEVER, I just installed iOS5 on my iPad 1. It is, in fact, faster (it seems anyway). LOVE IT!!! :)

Slow for my Ipad 1

I updated - had the usual problems downloading and installing. I had to restore.

Since then, my iPad (64 Gig 3G model) is very slow - especially Mail, it won't display the mail message on first try. I have to get out of the program and re launch it.

My apps all seem very slow.

Should I restore again?

It's quite unbelievable just how much Safari has improved on the iPad 1. That alone makes the update worth it. Not to mention that the rest of the system feels a bit smoother as well...

Noticeably quicker

I installed IOS5 last night on my IP1. The whole system feels just a bit snappier. (not hugely snappier but I notice it). I have not done a detailed test, but all apps seems to work well if not better, including a system intensive apps like Djay and world of goo. Goodread, Atomic, ibooks all working fine.

Like others I'm disappointed that some of the new IOS features are disabled, particularly gestures. Whether Apple really didn't think these features would work well enough consistently enough or is just trying to get us to upgrade is mere speculation. (probably a bit of both).

Overall, IOS5 brings some nice new features and some performance improvement for IP1 users, although not as much as we were hoping for given some of the developer versions out there. Still a nice update and worth doing.

Mine is seems faster all around. App loading times, Safari, mail, etc., all seem quicker. I benchmarked Safari before the update and will benchmark it when I get home so see some quantitative analysis of it.

Also, the new features alone are worth it even if it stayed the same speed.

So far I'm pretty impressed. Despite the fact that I'm using it during the first sync and iTunes is still copying Apps, the speed still seems about the same as it was using it normally before.

I upgraded an ipad 1 and ipad 2 and both did a clean restore from the GM of iOS 5. I have noticed that hulu will go to buffering very often on the iPad 1 where as the iPad 2 just chugs along on the same video set to play at the same time. I know it is not the network so to speak as i have plenty of bandwidth for this sort of thing. I am curious what others are experiencing. I think the iPad 2 spoiled me for the iPad 1.

I have an iPad 1 and things are very unstable since upgrading. Someone suggested I turn off iCloud which helped, but I am still getting random crashes. I wiped it and restored again and it didn't help. I may do a factory reset and not restore, but load fresh. Ugh.

I updated my iPad1, 16gig wifi and it is almost unusable slow

open mail is 15 seconds from click on a folder til the screen responds
safari is 10-12 seconds from first char in URL to response.. if I type 5 or 6 chars, only the first shows for 10 seconds..

screen redraw of page refresh takes 30 seconds, before it was 5 seconds maybe.
how do I go back to version 4?

Sam

iOS 5 on my Ipad 1 works very nicely. Feels a little quicker than before and Safari is a significant improvement.

I'm not sure how much it matters but are those experience slow-downs upgrading or doing a full restore?

I always backup, do full wipe (on the iPad), and then restore.

Like many others IOS feels noticeably snappier in nearly every aspect. Every app I've tested works well. I'm definitely disappointed that so many features are disabled for IP1 users. But an upgrades and upgrade, and I'll take what improvements I can get.

Was it jailbroken?

Restore it as new and manually reload via iTunes & App Store.

My original iPad was becoming a bit laggy a few days ago. I did a hard reset and it's been fine since then.

Mine is almost unusable now. All you people commenting, talking about its running pretty well, and it barely finished installing already, need to quit. Leave your, aint even used it yet, know-nothing thoughts to yourself.

Mine was fine at first. Now the home button won't register it's running soo slow. You keep pressing it, and continually end up getting the currently running/task switching bar instead.

had no thoughts of getting an iPad 2 until iOS 5 killed my iPad. And there lies the real motive! Apple already faced a class-action suite when iOS 4 nuked all the iPhone 3Gs. They haven't learned their lesson. Instead, they keep pre-maturely killing the previous-gem device so that you're FORCED to upgrade.

Whatever dude. Restore as new and you'll be fine. There is no conspiracy. Ios5 is a great update to the iPad 1.

Well, since someone drug up this thread I'll say I have no issues whatsoever with iOS5 on my first gen iPad 3G. No difference in speed.

Pretty much everything is still working fine for me too. The only small complaint I've got is that it often takes a couple of seconds for the keyboard to appear and start working. Once I'm typing things work fine however.

I'd echo the suggestion to do a restore. Being so slow the home button doesn't register is definitely not what I'm seeing.
