Ultimate

Being or happening at the end of a process; final:

• Being the best or most extreme example of its kind: the ultimate accolade.

No, the iPad 3 will not be the Ultimate. It will be however, just the better of the bunch

So here's a controversial thread. I hated the original iPad. I found it too heavy, underpowered, lacked ram and the apps were just not there. Roll forward a year and the iPad 2 is much slimmer, not just a much faster CPU but two of them, the GPU was not just faster, it was up to 9 times faster, finally a decent amount of ram and plenty of apps. It was near perfect, all it lacked was the mythical Retina display.

iPad 3 is now just weeks away. Im 99% sure it has a retina display (supported by the necessary additional ram and CPU power) and that alone will make it close to perfect. I dont care whether it has an A5x or A6 chip, 8MP camera, LTE or is a little fatter.

I cant see how Apple can present a compelling enough successor so it looks like I'll be skipping every 2 or so iPads in future. That is ONLY unless they break three of their golden rules - flash support, file manager and SD/USB slots, none of which Im expecting them to offer.

How do you feel about future iPads in relation to iPad 3?

I would bet that were are NOT going to see a huge leap in performance due to the CPU. You got to remember that Apple also cares about how long that battery will last AND the CPU has got to drive this new Gazillion Pixel screen. This new screen, alone, will take some processing power.

If the iPad 3 is AS fast as the iPad 2, we need to consider ourselves lucky!

potential

I have owned several tablets, the iPad 2 has been superior in almost every way. Android tablets are catching up and Apple has to start adding features like themeing and multiple app downloads to stop competition. The iPad 3 has the potential to be the ultimate tablet if iOS6 brings refreshed and improved features to the market. Apple needs to increase user customization ( i doubt they will), people love to make things look like they want.

Ultimate: No
Better: Yes

A side note, I played with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G today at work. Speed tests showed 28-32Mbps (in a concrete shopping centre too). However the device itself was laggy.

Um...Yeah right, maybe 50 years from now when everyone has 6G speed and no data caps. But by then, multi-terrabyte storage will be so cheap that it would preclude any need for a cloud.

Tony

50 years from now the idea of carrying around storage which is tied to a specific device will be ridiculous. It won't matter how cheap it is. The point is to be able to access data from anywhere, not to hoard it (and worry about losing it, having it break, having to drag-and-drop files, etc.).

The latter would be downright awesome. Though for it to work the touch sensor would need to be able to resolve far more than just the ten distinct points that it currently does.

A couple of years ago a company demonstrated a multitouch resistive touchscreen that was so sensitive and precise, it could in theory pick out individual brush bristle strokes. Its resolution is beyond most screen resolutions. Incredible.

Let me see. Ah, here is a demo on Engadget. Unlimited multi-touch, works with fingers, styluses, or whatever.

I wonder what happened to that company?

perfect? for now

Perfect beyond this year? No.

There are many things that people would like to see in a tablet to make it the "perfect" solution, but every year, something new comes around to make it obsolete.

I would like to see a Wacom Cintiq - 2048 pressure and angle sensitive pen touch layer included to make the tablet more useful for photography and art applications, but it is a pipe dream. Benefits would be that you could create and edit on the go with precision, and would have access to turn your tablet to an extension to your desktop to allow tablet editing on your Mac. In addition, it enhances POS transactions as signing with a pen is still more natural (at this point in time) than using a finger.

it will be interesting to see where they go from here if the rumors are true. what can they do to improve upon it next year? and the year after that?

it will be a leader, that much is almost certain, but what apple does in the future to keep up the iPad craze will be very telling.

My parents have a 10yr old WindowsXP PC that still does 99% of what they use it for, that being going online and using the occasional Office applications, skype etc. Although its no longer cutting edge it still totally serves its purpose.

I see the iPad 3 being THAT device, it's a milestone and future versions will merely refine it. Your iPad 3 will eventually conk out (probably well within 10yrs), but in that time it will probably always run Facebook, your email, office, Facetime, videos, music, pictures and low end game well.

Im not saying I'll never buy a newer iPad ever again, I'll buy the latest and greatest iPad either when my soon to be iPad 3 finally dies or until Apple bring out a new iPad that is totally revolutionary and makes the old one totally redundant. Right now I cant think what that feature might be. The iPad just needed a bit more ram and a retina and its more or less future-proof.

For me, no file manager, no iPad

My Air is not much bulkier, is far more capable, and I can manage my files!

What files do you want to manage that you can't right now.
I mean how important is that really.
People keep saying this but don't give an explanation.
There are very few files that a app like good reader or many others that won't handle or let you work with them.
Sort them etc.

Ultimate tablets use OLED screens.

Even the "good reader" is a very bad file manager. Why not just have a real thing? Android has it and everybody loves it. Have you heard any Android users demanding Google to get rid of file system? Compare this to iOS situation.

And did you ever hear anyone shouting at Apple to get rid of the floppy drive? No, but they helped kill it off because it wasn't necessary anymore. Same with file system.

And yet people express their desire to have a file system in iOS on this forum every single day. Why is that? Floppy drive was discontinued because it was replaced by CD drives. What exactly has replaced file system? Good reader? iOS is simply castrated in this regard and Apple has to come up with all kinds of weird schemes to mask that. Consider iCloud where only certain types of files may be stored on a per-application basis. Why? Because iOS does not have a file system to support Drop Box like interface.

Because they are whiny babies who are stuck on old ways of doing things and think a tablet should be a windows laptop with the keyboard snapped off?

And you are a "tough guy" who is ready to jump through the hoops just to prove that Apple is right? Just tell me how can you do the following trivial task on iPad: download PDF form from web site, fill out/edit the form, send/submit the form to a given e-mail address.

Dude, sales talk for themselfs... - There is a reason for iPad to be the number ONE! ;)

And if you want a laptop, buy one... Dont expect your phone to make you coffee either!

Yes, clearly the only solution is a file system and this justifies the endless bellyaching about it, what can I say in the face of such genius

iPhone used to be number one too and now (2011 sales) Samsung sells more smart phones than Apple
