My iPhone is my compact camera. I use my DSLR for my serious work like city/landscape.

Last year in Europe when my batteries failed in St. Petersburg, I used the phone for pics and it was a real saver! The pics are good, albeit not 12 megapixs like my camera, but, I still have lots of good pics of the Summer Palace and Church of the Spilled Blood. I wish I had had the 4 then, but it is what it is!;)

No way.

I am a photography enthusiast, I always carry a compact camera with me everywhere. Currently I'm using the new Lumix ZS5 which has full manual controls as well as AI. The lens is a Leica 25mm to 300mm zoom. At just 4"x2.3"x 1.2" it's small and light.

When I go out specifically to shoot, I use a Nikon DSLR.

The iPhone camera may be good enough for the occasional snapshot, but I've never had an interest in a camera on a phone. Yet I do see why some people like them. That's the beauty of choice.

Actually the improved camera is a big reason that I want the iphone4. We travel with our four Greyhounds a lot and I want to be able to grab that special photo without carrying an additional camera. Here is a photo that I took with my 3GS, and while it is OK, it was a great shot and could have been so much better.

That is exactly the hope. I may even get an iPhone for my wife for that purpose. Her Blackberry isn't very good with photos and having only one device is preferred to lugging a dedicated camera around.

Won't replace it, but it will get used a lot more often.

The specs are not clear, anyone know if the i4 front camera will actually be able to snap photos in addition to the video?

My compact digital camera is Canon G10 and a dslr on the side, so no, the iPhone will not replace it. However, it will be great camera phone to carry around to capture a picture at a moments notice.

For a planned trip, concert, or event that allows cameras it will not. These types of gatherings usually are best for a good P&S or DSLR. For everything else (day to day use) it will. Actually the only camera I have ever carried on me everyday was built into a phone. So in reality the iPhone 4's camera will be used exactly the same way I use my phone camera now (just better pics and used more often). I don't think you will see many people on a trip to Rome taking most of their pictures with a camera phone when visiting landmarks.

Well, I haven't bought a camera since the one that I bought in 2001 and I still use it to this day, an old Sony Mavica that recorded the photos onto a CD.
I dig that out once a year for vacations, shoot some photos and then never even look at them, and repeat next year. That camera still has more megapixels than my 3GS.

Even now, the few times that I have taken photos during the year, it's been on my iPhone. Maybe if my old Sony above didn't need to be recharged, I would have used it more but nothing beats the convenience of a camera on my phone that works as long as my phone does.

I'll likely never use the video camera. I have not once used the video camera on my 3GS.

I used to have one of those lol!I think it's time to upgrade that as well lol. the IPhone 4 should kill that camera! :p

No.

My Canon SD1100 will still be my primary P&S.

But this iPhone does record at a higher resolution and will always be carried everywhere with me, so it might as well be my main camera too. I don't shoot at a high MP or plan to be a photographer. I just want some cool pix "good enough" to post on Facebook.

Cyber, phone sex (aka Face Time), and sexting hasn't looked this good on a cell phone from Apple! :D

Back in 2006 my wife and I bought a 7.2 MP Sony CyberShot, great camera, slim design, but it has lag and isn't as easy to use as we hoped. Xmas 2008 I bought her a newer CyberShot to replace it, better pictures and almost no lag. That has turned into her camera/the family events camera. I thought I would use the older one as my camera but found I never carried it. The iPhone will be my camera now that it can take better pics and will probably shoot more video with it. So yes!

My P&S at the mo is the Panasonic Lumix TZ7.. the iPhone *may* replace it on most occasions, but I'll still have my DSLR on big events etc..

I'm not sure how good low light photo's/indoor will be on the iPhone 4 and what this LED flash will produce.. Obviously will be fully testing next Thursday :)
I have the US, non-HD version of this (called the ZS1 here) and trust me when I say the Iphone will be a long time replacing this excellent camera. The zoom and macro alone are reasons enough to keep it but image quality is astoundingly good.

That said, I take a LOT of pictures with my 3G. "The best camera is what you have with you," or whatever the quote is, and it's true. It's in my pocket and I use it for all kinds of things. Iphone 4's camera looks to be quite a step up from the 3G, so I'm excited. It won't replace the Lumix, but I won't feel as bad about taking pictures of "good" things with my Iphone as I do now. Honestly, most times just not having to worry about much - zoom, focus, etc. - is really nice. (As much as I'm looking forward to having some control over focus in the Iphone, I hope it won't keep me from grabbing quick shots because I get too concerned over focusing on just the right thing.)

For a second there, I had to check the name and make sure I hadn't already posted: my P&S is a Panasonic Lumix TZ5, and but my DSLR is my "go to" camera for most things.

And I'm in the "it's going to depend" group. 5MB is reasonable enough for snapshots, and I'm more liable to have my phone with me than stuff my P&S in my purse (or lack there of), so it's well within reason to think that it may end up replacing my P&S - just depends entirely on how well it really takes pictures & video :D

Kudos on a nice shot of your dogs. Who cares about the photo quality, when they're looking so good... :)

Even the crappy (compared to the 3GS and iPhone 4 cameras) camera on my 3G has more or less replaced my digital camera. The only time I bring my digital camera with me now is if I'm at a concert and I want to record...but with the iPhone 4 that'll no longer be a problem.

Thanks! The photo was taken at Jekyll Island Georgia on the beach at sunrise! It was pretty cold that day as you can see from the dogs wearing their jammies!! Greyhounds have very little body fat compared to other breeds and get cold easily! And they're spoiled too!!

I've already replaced my point and shoot with my 3g and then only bring out the DSLR for special occasions. But this is mostly because I haven't gotten around to upgrading my P&S. I am defiantly looking forward the iphone 4 so i'll have a better every day camera with video.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

While it won't replace my camera, I will use it more provided that the pictures turn out good.

Hahahahaha no. Thats just too funny. No. But then again, I like taking good pictures in good lighting and in bad. Based on the preview photos, the iPhone takes mediocre photos in good lighting, and since they didnt have the guts to show off low lighting photos, its easy to assume its just as awful at those as every other cellphone.
