I don't know if it will happen with this version but I won't be surprised if they make the video element of the camera better to compete with the likes of go pro.

Expect something new in the 5S. Whether or not it's going to be a killer feature remains to be seen. NFC might be there but then the fingerprint scanner would have to be there also.
Hopefully we see something new. Just a spec bump would be a little disappointing.

Like NFC and fingerprint scan? Or is it even possible that the 5S only get better camera and faster processor? Can we at least be assured that Tim Cook will do the right thing? What about larger iPhone and cheaper iPhone?

We don't know. We won't know until they announce the phone. We don't even know when that will be until they announce the announcement.

As for 'the right thing' that's rather subjective. But you can guarantee that the geeks won't like it cause it's never wow enough for them and they don't like that they aren't Apple's target audience anymore.

But otherwise, it's a waiting game.

----------

NFC - I'm going to go with no on this model.

Apparently there are like 5 standards for NFC which may be why Apple won't add it. They don't want to be supporting HD when Blu wins.

fingerprint scanner - Again, no..

I rather have to agree with this. I suspect that folks are jumping to a way wrong conclusion on this and it's not tech for detecting exact fingerprints that Apple's looking at but tech to tell how a finger is resting on the screen. "Mute" areas of the screen by detecting that's a palm or a finger on the edge cause it's holding the device. and so on

----------

Edit
I didn't want to be rude, but all I am suggesting is that just because the technology might not be great right now, doesn't mean technology can't improve. ;)

Catch is that Apple tends to be very cautious about tech when it is in that 'no great' stage. Particularly when it is hardware related and that 'not great' could have a negative impact on cx. Case in point, putting a retina display in the iPad Mini at the risk of vastly reducing the life of the much smaller battery

----------

While it will not make any jaws drop, if they can make a single model that can run all LTE bans and work on T-mobile and China Mobile

They could leave out China Mobile at this point and it would still be awesome. A single phone model that works on CDMA and GSM for all US carriers and is unlocked so you can take it international would be great for customers and for their staff (no more dealing with 3-5 sets of model numbers etc)

I honestly wouldn't expect anything but incremental upgrades in an S release. That's just not Apple's strategy. And anyway, I'm more looking forward to iOS 7. I think there's a lot they can do with software improvements to differentiate the S.

Can we get off of the fingerprint scanner wagon?

Indeed. I mean fingerprints are sooooo last year. It's all about the retinas these days. Scan those eyeballs folks

Actually if there was one useful wow feature that Apple might try for at some point, how about finding a way to put the front facing camera either behind the display or even have more than one with it more centered so you can do things like facetime and not be off center etc.

on the software side, how about restoring features like being able to pick the quality you download for purchased videos, buying without downloading at this time and setting up iCloud so it sees you have iTunes Match and what you downloaded and if you restore it redoes that as well. All things many might find useful.

And sort out that whole transfer of purchases between IDs issue.

Just a spec bump would be a little disappointing.

The S is generally always a 'spec bump' over the previous. The new bits turn up on the numbered models. not the S

Comparing a new and innovative way to use and control a device and a portable camera, each with nearly endless capabilities, to a fingerprint scanner. Cute.

All Apple would need is someone to find an easy way to fool it and they would instantly lose nearly all credibility...and, since there had yet to be a fingerprint scanner that can't be fooled, the odds aren't in their favor (especially when the device itself will likely be covered in the fingerprints needed).

The only purpose of a fingerprint scanner would be security...which can be fooled and, unlike pass codes, can't be shared with others or ever changed if it were compromised.

So you enjoy entering your lock code 48 times a day? I sure don't. Bring on the fingerprint scanner.

only feature i would consider "killer" is wireless charging, everything else is just either a gimmick im not going to use because its not supported anywhere near me (NFC) or a gimmick im not going to use because its just a gimmick (see Siri as an example of a "feature" ive never used because its just what i class a gimmick)

i am assuming the 5S will be a slight speed bump on the 5, and will be rolled out with a new iOS version that will "omit" a key new "feature" or upgrade to an old "feature" from older models to force the "must haves" to upgrade.

Me, ill wait for my contract to be up and get whatever is out then, im quite enjoying my 5, and soon it will be in its iron man armor :)

Wireless charging is also something of a gimmick since you still need to have a charging pad to put it on.

That said if it was one form of charging, and there were restaurants etc that would support it so you could charge your whatever right on the table while you eat, that wouldn't be a horrible thing. But it isn't likely to take over as THE charging anytime soon.

For me the 'killer' feature would be if they could find a way to make devices, especially iPads more useable outdoors. Bright days are tricky and while I can generally pull it off I would never turn down it being easier. Plus it would kill all that smack talk from Amazon. If they could add supplemental solar charging along the inlay that wouldn't be bad either even if it was only used to boost power so such display tweaks wouldn't totally eat the battery.

Palm detection, finger detection as I mentioned to someone else wouldn't be bad. Less smudgy screens. A tad more anti on the anti glare not bad either. Otherwise what we really really need is a more stable iOS. Get out these bugs that Forstall got fired over. Restore some of the features like how in iOS 5 you could pick what video quality you wanted to redownload regardless of whether you were in the general store list or your purchases (and restore the store showing that you already bought something). Perhaps even start scanning certain parts of 3rd party apps to look for bugs that will crash the app and gunk up the works and cause users issues. Maybe not for every app but many developers would happily pay say $30-50 (an app) for a code review by an Apple expert to verify they are bug free. And users would probably flip to see a Verified tag on an app to know that it is less likely to screw with their stuff.

Not sure, but I would hardly consider NFC or Fingerprint sensor killer features. As for your other questions. Just gotta wait and see. :)

I would not call CPU or Camera a killer feature either, I am thinking it has something linked to iOS7, but who knows, but it needs to be killer

the best "killer" feature would be if they aready made the damn iOS much less complicated when it comes to the most basic things like turning on and off wifi since you need to make 354023525taps on the screen just to get to the button.

A killer feature for me would be a single model iPhone that could be used on the LTE networks of AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-mobile and foreign carriers.

lol I feel the same way. I'd like wifi/bluetooth/airplane less cumbersome to navigate to.

Another common one that I don't understand how it didn't arrive in iOS6 is having the 20% battery warning come up as a notification at the top instead of a prompt.

Actually, 2-4 depending on if you are in an app or not. But your way makes it seem like way "complicated" and "cumbersome", instead of just a mild inconvenience. :D

FP scanner would be monumental if it also worked for ALL passwords...I HATE remembering passwords! If I could log into my bank account by holding my finger on the screen, then I'd buy the phone on day one. This is assuming apple makes it work NEAR PERFECTLY and SEAMLESSLY.

The 4S had no "killer" feature. All it had was Siri, a pointless gimmick that could have been introduced also to the iPhone 4 but was held back as a way to try to make people upgrade to the rather underwhelming 4S.

I wouldn't expect anything better from the 5S.

It's amusing to see people talking about unlocking their phones 48 times a day. The lock only makes sense if your phone is stolen. Considering how it's less likely that a phone will be locked than that it will be used, suffering the inconvenience of unlocking the phone all the time just in case it may be stolen is a joke. Which is pretty much why the fingerprint sensor is basically useless - it's main use would be if something you don't want to happen were to happen.

Yes, there will be several killer features! They will be unbelievable! You won't be able to catch your breath! You'll be blown out of your socks!

I know what those features will be, unlike everybody else in the world, except the people at Apple.

Sorry...can't tell....NDA.

But you'll be amazed!!!

;):D

No, but it'll come in two versions. A giant sized Spongebob Squarepants edition with an Adderall dispenser on the bottom, and regular.

This post is monumentally dumb. Why would my phone be unlocked when it's stolen? And yeah, the "main use" of the lock code and a possible fingerprint sensor is to prevent things I "don't want to happen". That could be said of any security feature. Does that make your airbag "useless" too?

The prompts in general should be revamped. The modal blue dialog boxes are ugly as hell and I can't believe they've survived for this long. The notification system is internally inconsistent (the blue boxes have no aesthetic kinship with the notification banners) AND inconsistent with the rest of the UI (why not give the dialog boxes that weird but strangely soothing fabric background, you know, the one behind the row of icons in the multitasking area?).

I'd like to see an option for waterproofing, a bigger battery and more efficient electronics, and some alternative to the 'home' button (it's silly to have a touch screen phone for which one has to interact with a button regularly). Also, I'd like a 'kill all' option for the processed loaded for pseudo-multi-tasking.
