And that is the crux of the debate on so many of the threads here.
I expect many people had the same attitude towards Microsoft in it's prime, the 1990s.
Competition has been the undoing of countless supposedly untouchable companies.

And exactly how has Microsoft been "undone"?

Don't know about another five years, but whatever is unveiled Wednesday will likely be the iPhone for the next two years.

That's an awfully long commitment. It'll hurt those who find 4" not enough the most.

If I wanted a huge phone, I'd go buy one. I wouldn't sit here on the forums and bitch and moan ENDLESSLY about how Apple is destroying my life. (I really don't get that... people, if you want a bigger phone, go get one and quit whining! Is it really that hard?)

I hope it does take another 5 years. By that time, this trend of going huge for a phone will have reversed. I am completely happy with the current size. I imagine I'll be fine with the new one, since it's not a major increase in size. I want to be able to put it in my pocket, hold and text with one hand, etc.

Good response greytmom. Exactly how I feel. Apple has not nor will bow down to the whiners on this or any forum so instead of coming here to complain, just leave and buy your big phones today. However, they are not mature enough to do this. They want to rant/vent thinking it will make them feel better getting it off their chest. Pathetic :p

The current iPhone screen is just right.

Bigger is not better when it comes to something you carry in your pocket.

Watch Apple increase the size to 4-inches then all their Apple worshipers say that 4-inch is perfect...then in 5 years Apple increases the size again.

Am I the only freaking person in the world that is not completely obsessed with the screen size of a phone? To be brutally honest, I'm fine with my current iPhone screen size. Never saw the 'need' to make it bigger, other than to copy what Android has been doing. I feel like Apple is pressured to make this phone larger just to shut everyone up. If you want a bigger display get a ********* iPad and call it a day. People keep wanting to blow up the screen size more and more until we're all walking around with iPad's strapped to our ears to make a phone call.

What is the point? Why is everyone so unhappy and so obsessed with making the screen size bigger? It's a smartphone. The whole point was to make it small and compact and now we're heading the opposite direction by demanding they make it bigger

You people who seem to be totally agai st big screens are failing to se the big picture....

In the very near future, maybe not for apple phones but everything else...the entire front face of the phones are going to be the screen..
This means all current phones will start to shrink in actual size but keep athe same screen size or even no up enig a larger screen size with a smaller footprint.

I am not going to do the math or whatnot, but If you take entire front face of the iPhone 4s and convert that to all screen, with adding a bit to the width, we could easily go from a 3.5" screen to a 4.3-4.5" screen with barely increasing the size of the devices,

All the haters love to exaggerate the size of Androids with modern sized displays.

Here's the facts, as hard as they may be to face.

135.5 x 67.9 x 8.9 mm - 4.65" display - Nexus

115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm - 3.50" display - iPhone 4S

I see loads of girls at the university carrying Androids like this.
Perhaps some of the boys here, are just not up to it :)

Expressed the way you have, is something I'm aware of. It's called preferences which I respect.

Some like small. Some like a bit larger. No big deal.

It's the wild exaggerations, lack of knowledge, and hatred that so many use to make anything other than an iPhone seem outrageously large.

When in fact it's only a few millimeters.

Let's deal with FACTS:

The Galaxy Nexus with a gorgeous 4.65" display is only 9.5mm wider than iPhone 4S

For those of you who may not be able to do the math, that's only 0.37"

Hardly Truck Sized... LOL :)

Don't believe it?

I use the 4S and Galaxy Nexus every day. I truly like both phones, but I find the Nexus too big.

Sure, awesome screen to look at, but it essentially needs two handed operation. I don't have small hands, but when holding the Nexus in one hand, I have to uncomfortably stretch my thumb to be able to reach the notification window. If I'm holding the phone in my right hand with fingers wrapped around the left side of the phone, its difficult to reach all areas with my thumb.

I always wanted a larger screen iPhone, but after using this Galaxy Nexus for months, I would be totally happy if the iPhone stayed at 3.5.

We have a lot of devices at work (mobile development) and thats one of the biggest complaints on the larger phones. It's almost impossible on the lumia 900 to reach the left side of the screen with your right thumb without starting bing search with your palm.

I agree on the pocket comment too. it wasn't that long ago we were moving towards smaller and smaller phones and now we have 5.5" screens. People buy them though so what do I know. I admit they're intriguing but I don't want to carry one of those around until man purses are fashionable...

Agreed. What i want to tell people is if u need a bigger size ios device, just use the ipad. For on the go thing is always your iphone which is comfortable to use.

It is funny how you mention "bigger" and everyone assumes you are asking for an iPhone note.......

A 4.3 inch phone is day and night difference compared to a 5+ inch one. It is quite a nice compromise between too small and too big.
I agree. The largest I would want any phone to go is 4.3". Any bigger and it would be too big for me. Why do people automatically assume everyone who wants a larger size wants an iPad or Galaxy Note sized phone?

In my opinion 4.3" at 16:9 aspect ratio is the perfect size for me, but Apple insists one-size-should-fit-all so there's this constant bickering over personal preference.

I've also tried Android and prefer iOS so when people say just go get an Android phone they are missing the point. The only thing I like about Android is the different choice in phones and sizes. For people like me who prefer iOS and a somewhat larger phone there is no other option then to hope that Apple will make it.

The iPhone has become such a big part of people's day to day lives as an all in one device. If the iPhone experience can be enhanced by a bigger screen then I'm all for it.

The key obviously is balance between screen size and device size, and where my frustration with Apple lies is that clearly a proportionally bigger screen can fit within the existing iPhone 4 size, yet here we are looking at potentially just a longer screen. I'm not an industrial designer by any means, but to me there is so much wasted space around the existing screen. Motorola just announced the Razr M, which has a 4.3 inch screen in a form factor similar to the iPhone 4, so it's not like it can't be done.

I think you've jacked up your math if you think the screen can get bigger without the chassis getting bigger.

And sizing down the side bezels is an assumption people make with no technology knowledge to know if it can actually be done.

Kudos for your excellent post.

Offering an intelligent list of reasons why you prefer an iPhone, is refreshing to read. I most certainly agree the larger size is not conducive to one handed use. Since I don't use that method of input, frankly I don't even notice. I can appreciate how annoying it would be to have to use two hands if one is the norm.

With some luck perhaps others will notice its possible to have a discussion that deals with real preferences, instead of fabricated stories just to amplify ones agenda.

Assuming the iPhone even survives that long.

Bu no... Unless evolution makes everyone's hands Really big.....I doubt we need much bigger.

I think CNET did a review of the RAZR m and it's 4.3 with the size of the iPhone....but.... The iPhone does have that big ass home button.

An absurd inference.

I'll have to look that up, but the limiting factor now is the side bezels, not top and bottom. Unless you want an even taller and skinnier iPhone? :p

Edit: it's close, but not exact. So you would have to increase the width a bit.

Maybe it is jacked a bit, but all I was trying to get at was that a bigger screen could fit the within the "same general size" as the iPhone 4. In fact, the Razr M is only 2 mm wider than the width of the rumored iPhone 5 dimensions, just not as tall. And they've managed to get a 4.3 inch screen on similar dimensions.

iPhone 4 dimensions: (3.5 inch screen)

Height: 115.2 mm
Width: 58.6 mm
Depth: 9.3 mm

iPhone 5 rumored dimensions: (4 inch screen)

Height: 123.83 mm
Width: 58.6 mm
Depth: 7.6 mm

Motorola Razr M dimensions: (4.3 inch screen)

Height: 122.5 mm
Width: 60.9 mm
Depth: 8.3 mm

Have you calculated the DPI at those measurements? It might "jack" up their retina requirements. ;)

Also keep in mind their desire to maintain a 640 pixel width for existing app support/development.

Valid points for sure. And the Razr M screen is certainly not retina.
It's important to note that non-retina displays can cause blindness.

Recent tests reveal users lifespan is also reduced by an average of fifteen years.

Today, I had my non-retina computers & phones crushed & recycled.

I feel better already. :)

Lol, but you know Apple wouldn't dump the retina display just to increase screen size. If they ever increase further, they'll do their best to maintain a very high DPI.

That's all I'm sayin'.

Edit: and after buying my 4, I HATED going back to my 3G.

I'd love to see Apple produce TWO iPhones one small, one a little bigger, 4.3" is just right. They make many different computers, many different iPods, the new iPad mini is coming this month or next... so why the "one phone fits all" policy? Sure they'll sell 100 Million of these things in one quarter but maybe they'd sell twice that if they'd offer consumers a choice. But what do I know? I'm just an average blue-collar working stiff.
