While I have no doubt that Apple would love to introduce Office for the iPad along with the iPad 3, I can't see Microsoft sharing the stage like that, touting the iPad as the great PC replacement, especially with Windows 8 tablets on the way.

They're going to save the Office-on-a-tablet hype for their own.

I think Office (or at least a subset of features) is coming for the iPad, but MS is saving the big stuff for themselves.

I agree. Especially if Apple shows off a new iWorks suite for the new iPad 3.

They won't want to highlight Office and iWork on the same stage at the same time.

Why is everyone making such a huge deal about this? What features does Office have that Apple's suite (or any other current productivity app) doesn't?

Saving in a format that a huge number of companies actually use without having to go through compatibility headaches?? :)

I really hope so. If I could just get Word and Excel my iPad's usefulness would go up 1000%! It would actually be a valuable tool for my in the field and could replace the field laptop when used with Drop Box!

Please MS, bring it on! I bet it would be near $100 and I would pay that and more if it worked!

I can not see MS and Apple announcing this together. It is more likely that MS will announce the app right after the iPad 3 into! It will see a LOT of iPads

.doc or .docx or .ppt or, etc. Everyone uses Office, and thus being able to have documents and files that you know are compatible with the software others will be using means you can get more use out of it.

^ oh, did not know that. but was also thinking that this couldn't help Microsoft in any way especially if they are pushing their own Windows phones. Helping Apple get more people into their iOS ecosystem, would put a damper on Microsoft's other interests, be it smartphones now, and possibly tablets some time in the near future.

Either way, Microsoft wins. They're a software company. They will never be a computer hardware company. As long as they're making a profit from selling Office on iPads they really won't care. Sure it might be nice to sell some of their tablets, but those Windows 8 Tablets are there only to sell... Office and Windows 8.

I currently don't have Office or iWork but I thought iWork already supported Office file formats. I've been considering getting iWork since its so much cheaper but maybe I'll rethink it if it's not up to par.

In any case, I think it's redundant to show that the iPad can run productivity apps. It's possible but I feel like Microsoft can get enough publicity on its own and by being in the App stores top charts.

Any news on his?? MS mentioned all would be revealed in a few weeks

Can live without Word, but Excel for iPad would really make the iPad a work solution for my needs (basic Excel)

MS and Apple seem to have a good relationship these days, def a win win situation and it would sell bucketloads, gotta be coming surely!!

Also do you really think Office was faked in the article? Seems unlikey to me

The main feature is it is MS Office. Apple suite does not do it for me. I work and live in the world where MS Office rules:rolleyes:

Does Pages work well with manuscript-length formats? I'm talking 200+ pages, multiple sections, bibliographic management compatibility, extensive endnote/footnote flexibility, macros, etc.?

I can't wait for Office to come out. Pages is a beautiful app, but it's far too limited. I tried a few other productivity apps on my retina iPad, but they were all basically crap. As of now, the app store suffers from a lack of productivity software and a huge surfeit of crappy "annotate your PDFs" apps.

No matter what Microsoft makes for the iPad they will always hold back on the Apps. This way they can lure people on to their tablets. Office is Microsofts killer app. You can't even get one note on the Mac.
