It's legal, it's playing by the rules and many people seem to think it's perfectly justifiable as a result but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I don't think I'd ever buy from a reseller who is obviously out to make a profit and I think I'd have to be truly, truly desperate before I ever considered it. But clearly there are people who have more money than sense or patience, and the argument is that you might as well take advantage of that demand.
This goes for scalped tickets as well as high-demand items like iDevices and, in the past, things like Nintendo Wiis and Tickle Me Elmos.
If I was entitled to buy 2 I'd consider buying an extra one to sell to a friend but NOT at a profit. The idea would be to save my friend the time and effort of waiting hours in line, not to take advantage.
rather than getting mad at the resellers, maybe your anger needs to be directed at the third parties willing to pay a premium for these resold items. If there wasn't this large segment of buyers paying significantly marked up prices, there would be no secondary reseller market.
Exactly.
And sorry to sound a bit harsh but if you want something bad enough, you'll take whatever steps are necessary to get it. Don't want to wait in line all day? That's fine, just don't whine and complain that you couldn't get an iPad because there were already 500 people in line ahead of you--apparently they wanted it more than you and did what was needed to buy one.
I would have no problem with people waiting in line. I don't personally feel that it's worth my time but if you do, then more power to you. I don't wait in line for Boxing Day sales either but I certainly don't begrudge the people that do, and get rewarded for their patience with better deals than the rest of us get.
In fact I'd consider this an argument against hoarding and reselling. If I go to the time and effort to wait in line to be one of the first people to get my hands on an iPad, then I would want to be rewarded with the ability to purchase one -- not to be turned away, "sorry, we ran out", because the guy in front of my bought up all of them purely for the purpose of reselling them.
