I certainly understand the frustration many have with the quantities that are bought only to be resold but rather than getting mad at the resellers, maybe your anger needs to be directed at the third parties willing to pay a premium for these resold items. If there wasn't this large segment of buyers paying significantly marked up prices, there would be no secondary reseller market.

And sorry to sound a bit harsh but if you want something bad enough, you'll take whatever steps are necessary to get it. Don't want to wait in line all day? That's fine, just don't whine and complain that you couldn't get an iPad because there were already 500 people in line ahead of you--apparently they wanted it more than you and did what was needed to buy one. And I don't want to hear the 'some of us have a job/life/etc' claim so often seen. I'd guess most buyers waiting in line are employed as well but did what they felt was needed to be able to wait in line. You don't want to take a vacation day to wait, again, fine, that's your choice--just don't b$&ch about it later.

It's legal, it's playing by the rules and many people seem to think it's perfectly justifiable as a result but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't think I'd ever buy from a reseller who is obviously out to make a profit and I think I'd have to be truly, truly desperate before I ever considered it. But clearly there are people who have more money than sense or patience, and the argument is that you might as well take advantage of that demand.

This goes for scalped tickets as well as high-demand items like iDevices and, in the past, things like Nintendo Wiis and Tickle Me Elmos.

If I was entitled to buy 2 I'd consider buying an extra one to sell to a friend but NOT at a profit. The idea would be to save my friend the time and effort of waiting hours in line, not to take advantage.

Exactly.

I would have no problem with people waiting in line. I don't personally feel that it's worth my time but if you do, then more power to you. I don't wait in line for Boxing Day sales either but I certainly don't begrudge the people that do, and get rewarded for their patience with better deals than the rest of us get.

In fact I'd consider this an argument against hoarding and reselling. If I go to the time and effort to wait in line to be one of the first people to get my hands on an iPad, then I would want to be rewarded with the ability to purchase one -- not to be turned away, "sorry, we ran out", because the guy in front of my bought up all of them purely for the purpose of reselling them.

Just curious. I have the iPad 1 and I got it a few months after it released, so I have never dealt with the whole release day excitement.

Do people try to 'flip' the iPad? Meaning buy it just to resell it for a profit? If so, how much profit do they make?

The only situation I would do that is if I bought two iPads and sold one of them and use the profit to subsidize the other.

Understandable, and I can certainly see why it would.

I'm personally a bit split on the matter. On one hand, it goes against the "community spirit" and so forth.

On the other hand, what gives me the right to judge what the person ahead of me does with the iDevice they just bought? It's their legally obtained personal property to do with as they see fit, is it not?

Interesting question. Community spirit vs. property rights.

the 'resellers' cater to two types of buyers:

- those in other countries who won't get the new ipad released until much later on
- those who gotta have the latest now and don't mind paying the extra

Yes, there will always be scum in the world.

Scum? Really?

Scum:
  • Child molesters/pornographers
  • People who scam the elderly
  • Identity thieves
  • People who slaughter endangered species and/or cut down rain forest habitats for profit

Not scum:
  • People who re-sell iPads

What's the best model to buy and where do you guys generally sell?

32GB either 3G/wifi or just wifi and you'll be fine.Craigslist but if doing ebay just do the auction for a day but no more than 3 days.

I bought 6 iPad 2s last year, on 3 separate occasions from Target. Didn't have to wait in line. Didn't deprive anyone. Just checked online whether they were in stock and went and picked them up. Advertised on CL. Made a total profit of about $1000. Paid for my own ipad. No guilt. Will try to do it again this time around. Vote me down all you want. You're just jealous.

Don't see anything wrong with that. People can choose to wait in line if they want. People can choose to pay ridiculous prices on eBay if they want. Whatever works for you.

have fun trying to resell for a profit when 3 days later the preorders haven't even sold out yet. there won't be any lines at the apple store either, the stock>demand. I'm glad they did it right this way, and I'm sure they did it simply for this fact (resell value) and for a better experience for the customer.

enjoy your extra iPads

with Apples excellent return policy there really is no risk. if they don't sell in 13 days make a trip back to the apple store, only thing lost is a little time.

I bought a bunch for resale. Since they're not going to go for anything, I'll just return them. No risk, high potential reward.

This launch seems to indicate that Apple had been purposely creating supply issues to up the hype.

It'll be interesting to see how doing it this way affects anything (perception, news cycle, etc).

yeah, scum would seem to fit just fine to me...

They are taking advantage of a situation, if not actually making that situation worse by their very actions, at the expense of others out of simple, and mostly unwarranted, greed....justify it all you like, but only a low-life scum would consider this a legitimate business enterprise...drug dealers, scalpers and resellers all use the same moral compass and same excesses to justify their actions...they're all scumbags...

We live in a Capitalist country and Apple is the biggest Capitalist company. I see nothing wrong with purchasing a 2nd iPad and trying to resell for a profit. This is hedging your ACTUAL cost for your iPad. :)

You are correct sir about that 2 points..

When ipad 2 launch in US about march..we in Indonesia will get it about july/august.. and so with Iphone 4s..it is launch just in end January 2012..

So when the Ipad 2 launch in US, in the first month the price of the Ipad 2 in the black market here in Indonesia sometimes up until $1500 for the 64GB 3G  most of them came from singapore..so it will have no guarantee in Indonesia if it break, screen leak etc etc.. unless you go to singapore to change it yourself..

and for the iphone 4S we don't have a contract like in US (only pay $50 for 2years etc).. although it also came from telco provider we have to pay about $750 (16GB), $850 (32GB), $900 (64BG).. you can pay cash 1 time or installment for 1 year...with that amount :D

But the good things here is that apple product (ipad n iphone) have a very good resale value too.. last month I sold my iphone 4 for about $605 to upgrade for the 4S, and I already used it for about 1,5 years.. the iphone 3G is still about $300 here.. not like blackberry and samsung (each month came newer/other version)..

ps: sorry for my english

I just googled Ipad 3 shortage and there are a ton of articles saying that the screen production is gonna cause a month to two months of a shortage eventually. I'm curious if this is accurate or not because as of right now it still seems like its shipping 16 March. Trying to decide if I should get another and hold it till the shortage.

its 2 per apple account. different card + different apple account = profit!

and yeah i've got 4 on the way, selling 3 of them for a profit like i do every year. People complain about how expensive apple products are. pshh i end up making money every time ;)

Scum? Really? I could see if they were buying essentials people need like food, gas, and the like but iPads? C'mon, iPads are completely luxury item that no one needs to survive. It may be annoying for some, but it is not going to make anyone die but not getting one on launch day.

Welcome to capitalism, enjoy your stay.

you have 14 days to return them for a full refund ;)

besides, not being able to sell an apple product on launch weekend? impossible

The people mad at resellers are absolutely hilarious, a hilarity which is compounded by the fact that they're oblivious to how absurd they're being.
