Thanks for the thoughtful response. I hope our comments don't get deleted as "off topic". That's one of the things I really dislike about this site. Discussions should be allowed to meander. Interesting things happen when discussions dare to veer off topic. This will probably get deleted as off-topic but I see where you're coming from. I wouldn't say they have no values at all. But as you say it's on a scale. Everything is so personal and emotional these days.
It's just that they, like everyone else in this insane society, are forced to constantly shout about how virtuous they are lest they be accused of not being virtuous enough. It's gone beyond human rights and environmentalism simply because those things make sense. It's become a religion.
Never be the first to stop clapping
In my mind, values are not something one compromises. What Apple and other big companies do these days is performative. Are they "forced" to do this? I don't think so. They choose to, because, in the social media era, big companies and individuals alike, willingly participate in performative feedback loops. We could all stop the madness right now...if we all just stopped. No one is forcing anyone, yet we all participate. It's perverse.
It's hard for me to take any corporation seriously when it comes to "values". It's all just marketing. I find Apple's hypocritical relationship with China disturbing on many levels. One of the primary things that convinced me the App Store monopoly needs to end was when the Chinese government forced Apple to pull a bunch of apps from the Chinese App Store...and they simply rolled over. And it's not just Apple. Look at how many celebrities and CEOs have had to make public apologies when the Chinese government didn't like something they said...lest they lose access to the Chinese market.
What do all of these companies and individuals who kowtow to China value? Money. Not privacy. Not democracy. Not freedom of expression. Not freedom of religion. Not human rights. Just watch the John Cena apology video. It's nauseating.
