Once again, it will sell well because the other new iPhones are priced so much higher, it means nothing. It's gonna sell well because the display isn't complete trash, but it's still a step backward.
It means enough to the people that will buy it and it means a lot to Apple shareholders.(I have no Apple stock btw) If Apple can sell, let's say, 10 million XRs, and 100,000 people won't buy it because the display is "subpar", who do you think Apple is more interested in?
Kick and scream all you want, this thing is gonna sell like hotcakes and the people that buy it are gonna love it.

90% of iPhone buyers could care less about the screen resolution!

They are not comprised of people like you find here.

The XR will be the "go to" device for the masses who want to use the Apple ecosystem.

Buyers will only care about the subpar display when comparing to the Xs/Max.

Perhaps, but my suspicion is that most who compare the XR against the XS/Max will say that the OLED display is not worth the extra $250 difference in price.

For most buyers it is all about price. Yes, they might glance over to the XS or MAX but Apple’s marketing keep these devices on separate tables. But if low price is your priority, you will not be looking at the screen when you see the price is over $1000. The price on the XR will catch their attention for sure.

They will be hugely popular as business phones too because of the price point just like the iPhone 7 and 8 was. The fact it’s screen may not be as good as the 8+ is insignificant for that sort of application or even the consumer who is just interested in having a phone that looks different from the classic iPhone design.

Yep, it will be the “meat and potatoes” Apple device for so many. Apple should sell way more XR units than any other. Companies will buy in mass when they compare prices.

Agreed. I'm technically-inclined and have 20/15 vision with glasses (I do notice the PPI difference; it bothers me a little)... I'm still going for the XR because I don't feel the XS/Max are worth their price. Frankly, neither is the XR but I need to replace my iPhone 6.

Replacing your 6 is a reminder that many Apple customers are budget conscious--needing to get the best bang for their buck. I love technology, going from teaching BASIC programming in 1985 on an Apple IIe, if I recall correctly, to what we have access to today. And yet I still have bills to pay and needs to meet.

My wife and I keep our electronic hardware for a while. She uses the 4S I bought new in 2011 (I've changed the battery in it a couple of times), and she couldn't care less how old it is. She uses it primarily for phone calls, texts, and quick photos--she uses her iPad Air for Facebook, reading news articles, and general web surfing. I will probably upgrade to the XR, because my aging eyesight would enjoy the larger screen, and "upgrade" her to my 6s. The 6s will do all she wants and more, as will the XR for me. Sure--I would love a XS, but not for another $250. With our finances, I can pay for the XS, but I cannot justify it.

I already said that I believe it will sell well. I'm not "kicking and screaming"...I just won't buy it.
The rest of your babbling is about finances and stock, which isn't what I'm talking about at all. Sales and quality can largely be independent of each other.

What other people choose to do with their money is on them, very simple.
If OLED bothers me, I will get the 8 Plus.

I just can't wait for this to be released and hopefully all of the display moaning will go away.

To solidify the argument that general public do not care less - my sister has an iPhone X she has just broke by dropping, so until she goes to get it repaired she has gone back to her iPhone 7.

I was with her when she swapped the sims and booted it up and about 30 mins after restoring her data I asked how she felt about the 7. She just shrugged and said "just an iPhone, isn't it".
So I laughed and said what about the screen though? And she looked at it and said "what about it?"

I didn't press her on it further. :D

Couldn't. Care. Less.

Obviously she is not the representation of every person on the planet, but I'd wager a lot of people would have a similar outlook.

Agreed. I care deeply for quality display. I have XS, OLED TV, etc. But most of my friends and family don't notice the improvements, or enough to care.

Heck, many folks think the display on MacBook Air is fine and almost the same as MacBook's.

My wife couldn’t tell the difference between the screen on an 8+ and the OLED on the iPhone X when we compared them in store. She reckoned they looked the same lol.

This is why I think the XR is going to become the standard iPhone for the vast majority of Apples consumers. It’s difficult to market the XS to a lot of people because it looks a lot like the XR and it’s unique selling points like OLED aren’t always enough of a pull. Add to that it starts at £1k and I think that turns most off.

Wouldn't it be better to compare the 8 to the X? that would be the exact PPI comparison to the Xr.
The 8+ is noticeably sharper I think to the 8, for example even. The 8+ has a nice screen, I doubt
I would notice the difference to the X aside from the OLED on that comparison too.

My wife owns an iPhone 8 and can’t tell the difference between either of them. Then again I struggle to notice a huge difference between the 8 series if I’m honest.

In addition, news of the limitations of the XS/Max batteries against the XR will make the XR even more attractive: Apple's New iPhones Have an Unfixable Problem.

Wow.

I'm holding with my 7 with a brand new battery. This will cause Apple a mild headache and lost sales which means they'll actually work harder to fix all of this, cellular connectivity strength, wif connectivity strength, battery life, etc, on the next model. Less than a year away now, I'll wait. If i break my 7 I'll buy the Xr.

I see it immediately without ever looking side by side in the sharpness of the text when I
help my roommate with his iP6. I'm not saying it looks bad by any means though.

Maybe I got lucky, but I've gotten extremely good battery life on my Max. I've only had to use low power mode once, and that was after using the phone one day, not charging overnight, then using it another whole day. I had a Galaxy S9+ before this. The battery in it is smaller than the Note 9, but it seemed to drain battery pretty quickly no matter the circumstance. I tried numerous optimizations and turning features off and it still happened. I pretty much always had low power mode on the S9+ when it hit late evening/dusk. I usually go to sleep with my XS Max right around 50% every night. I value my real world experience with both phones much more than a single battery test.

Yep. The XS and XS Max have been roundly rejected in China, but interest in the XR is incredibly high. That's all Apple cares about.

Some people evidently do but it’s not always obvious to everybody and this is why it’s a struggle convincing people they need certain phones because of the screen alone. I enjoy the bigger screen of the 8+ so far but the crispness is not hugely apparent to me.
