Yes, AppleCare for me. Just like my Series 0 and Series 3.

I'm clumsy, distracted, have tile floors and have cats. The Apple Watch is my favorite piece of tech. The $ amount is worth it for my peace of mind. (Some people go to bars to relax; I buy AppleCare.)

Covered on my home contents insurance so I have no need for it.

LOL. The cost of the Apple Watch is WAY under my renter's insurance deductibles.

I have Apple care on my current SS S4 and have had it on all previous watches starting with watch 0 but, never used it until today when haptic and Digital Crown stopped working. Called Apple support this morning. New watch on the way. So glad I had AppleCare.

Yeah, depending how you pay for the watch, some credit card companies will actually cover the watch expenses. (I believe like compete coverage if the watch is either damaged beyond repair or in some cases, theft coverage.) But someone would have to check with their credit-card company to be sure.

Not getting it, though it's difficult to fight the urge to be covered.

This will be my third AW. I had it on my first watch because I had cracked or scratched the face of most watches I have had, including divers, but I ended up fine with the Apple Watch (I think this is because AppleWatch, especially the 40mm, is the most ergonomic watch I've owned, so doesn't get banged about as much). Haven't had it since, and haven't needed it. By not getting it this time, I will have saved the cost of a non AC+ repair, so even if I damage this next watch, the repair won't cost me more than my savings (remember, there is still a fee for AC+ repairs that are out of warranty, like accidental damage). If I don't damage this watch by next year, I'll have saved by self-insuring.

The way I see it is I am buying a £799 watch (S5 SSG 44mm), so if I spend £888 in total it stops it turning into a potentially £1175 watch in the future.

On the Aluminium base models though it is not so clear cut and maybe worth the chance. Though I have a SG Nike+ S4 that I did get Apple Care on lol.

That would’ve been covered anyways with the one year regular AppleCare.

Accidental damage cover up to £10k away from the home on my policy.

Your excess and bump in future premiums will cost you more.

Personally I always get AppleCare+ on devices that leave home. Sheet happens (see here).

AppleCare is in a different league of Service to other Insurance policies. They want you to send the device off for diagnosis. Take a few days to repair. Usually you have to chase them for updates. All the time you’re without your device. A friend of mine claimed on a Mobile Phone policy with Aviva and twice the phone came back as unrepaired. He kept having to send it back. It was a farce.

You don’t get that stress with AppleCare+. 24/48 replacements.

No. Normal warranty is 2 years (titanium model, but even the 1 year warranty on the non-edition Watch would be enough) and just like the first person who responded, I have never damaged a Watch and the way I'm using it (and wearing it!) doesn't really put it in harm's way.

Besides, if I do break it, I can either self-insure (e.g. buy a new one, even the cheapest one if need be), or live without it and wait until I have the money.

I usually only get AC for computers.
But a warranty at least here in the UK has nothing to do with insurance? I would think it’s more likely to need insurance on something you carry around. A laptop or desktop computer I would be more inclined to take a chance on not insuring IMO.

For work I meet people everyday and have this conversation, not once in 11 years have I ever met someone who has successfully filed a claim and got a payout for high value electronic items on their home contents policy. Once they realise the steps involved they never bother. That idea is the biggest scam in the insurance industry

Good luck with this. Personally I don’t like talking to my home insurance unless it’s vital who seems all too eager to increase rates.

Is my premium going to go up beyond £200 though? AppleCare+ is £89 plus the excess of £79 or £25 depending on the damage caused. It’s another £59 for the Apple Watch. I think based on my experience I think the risk is worth it. I negotiate my home contents insurance every year and set a target for the price I want. Whether I’ve claimed or not I play companies off each other to get the lowest cost. My wife has claimed for a mangled iPhone in the past and the premium was absorbed by changing providers.

There’s no right answer to this and we pay what we are comfortable with. I already spend a lot with Apple and would rather have the fall back of a slightly more inconvenient dealing with my insurers and save £150-200 than pay out when I’m very careful with my devices anyway. We do what we are comfortable with. :)

AC+ is infinitely easier to deal with than paying deductibles, risking premium increases, filing lengthy claims paperwork, waiting on a decision etc... I take it and get a new one if it breaks with AC+. To each their own though!

I thought like you until I claimed on Home Insurance once. :)

No it won’t go up by £200 on your next renewal but it will go up and stay up for at least 3 years. This is how they operate. That will be more than £200.

As you rightly said, Insurance is a personal preference. You can take the chance or pay to move the Risk over to Apple. You don’t need Insurance until you need it.

I still feel the same despite claiming. As I said I make sure my premium goes down each year by shopping around.

Wife and I got the subscription Apple Care+ by accident with our AW5 when preordering. I always buy AppleCare - didn’t realize it was a subscription till my wife told me. She preordered with her Apple credit card.

Time for me to do some reading.

I didn’t get Apple Care on my V3 watch, but after my husband accidentally broke the screen on his and ruined the watch a few weeks ago (v3 aluminum with no AppleCare), I got it on my new one. I may never use it, but for the rather small cost it’s worth the peace of mind knowing that if something was to happen, I’m covered. Just like I added it with loss or theft to our phones this year. I dropped my phone a few times (thankfully no damage) so I just went ahead and got it. He’s going to use my v3 watch for now and see if any deals come up on Black Friday. I really wanted the new watch now! I’m spoiled, I know.

Before you could add theft and loss to Apple Care my friends daughter had her phone stolen right out of her hands and had to pay it off!

The time you spend shopping around for homeowners/renters insurance every year I spend in the pool. Wearing my Watch. With AppleCare.
Do you not bother insuring your home then? Seems a silly statement to me unless you don’t own your own home. It would be very stupid of me not to have insurance that covers everything I own and worth the hour I spend each year.

Oh good grief! No, I don't own my condo. I rent. Yes, I have renter's insurance. Yes, I'm happy with my renter's insurance and my insurance company (where I also have my car insurance, so there is a discount). And no, there isn't any renter's insurance that would cover damage to my Watch (broken screen? non-functioning crown? etc) at an affordable cost OTHER than AppleCare. Therefore, I choose not to spend several hours every year (it takes longer than one hour where I live to change insurance) to shop around for a renter's insurance policy that still wouldn't cover my Watch.

Just a general comment, no insurance on anything is worth it until you have a claim. Here’s how I look at it:

low probability + low consequences/low cost = no insurance needed

low probability + high consequences/high cost = probably, house insurance might be a good example where self-insuring isn’t wise though the probability of major damage might be small. Also US Federal homeowner’s flood insurance is a good example

high probability + low consequences/low cost = maybe, in the case of the Watch, some people are prone to banging them up but the cost of replacement isn’t life changing like a house or nice car. You know who you are, lol, get AppleCare+. Also maybe a good idea for kids/teenagers gear.

high probability + high consequences/high cost = definitely if the price of insurance/warranty isn’t prohibitive.

Someone sounds versed in risk management.

I, too, would tend to self-insure something like a watch. I did opt for AC+ on my iPad Pro which ended up being a good choice as I began to experience light leakage around the left edge just after having it for over a year. I thought they would replace the screen yesterday, but they just handed me a new 12.9 iPP.

My wife purchased both of our Apple Watch 5s and did the monthly subscription for both. Only her Apple Watch AppleCare+ subscription shows under her Apple ID --- I show no AppleCare+ subscription under my Apple ID but https://checkcoverage.apple.com shows my watch is covered and under a monthly plan. :/

Covered by AppleCare+
With AppleCare+ you get additional service and support for your product. Your next payment will be due on October 22, 2019.

Coverage will automatically extend each month as long as you continue to make monthly payments. If you stop making monthly payments, your coverage will be canceled and cannot be reactivated.
Monthly renewal date: October 22, 2019

Hope it is easy to cancel lol. I made a note in Apple Notes.

My home contents insurance covers my home for fire and theft and I have cover for items including my iPhone and watch up to £10k. It costs around £350 per year and is a quick process on comparison sites and follow up calls. I don’t spend long and it doesn’t interfere with me exercising or going swimming. I usually do it while at work too.
