I have Apple care on my current SS S4 and have had it on all previous watches starting with watch 0 but, never used it until today when haptic and Digital Crown stopped working. Called Apple support this morning. New watch on the way. So glad I had AppleCare.

But a warranty at least here in the UK has nothing to do with insurance? I would think it’s more likely to need insurance on something you carry around. A laptop or desktop computer I would be more inclined to take a chance on not insuring IMO.No. Normal warranty is 2 years (titanium model, but even the 1 year warranty on the non-edition Watch would be enough) and just like the first person who responded, I have never damaged a Watch and the way I'm using it (and wearing it!) doesn't really put it in harm's way.
Besides, if I do break it, I can either self-insure (e.g. buy a new one, even the cheapest one if need be), or live without it and wait until I have the money.
I usually only get AC for computers.
For work I meet people everyday and have this conversation, not once in 11 years have I ever met someone who has successfully filed a claim and got a payout for high value electronic items on their home contents policy. Once they realise the steps involved they never bother. That idea is the biggest scam in the insurance industryCovered on my home contents insurance so I have no need for it.
Good luck with this. Personally I don’t like talking to my home insurance unless it’s vital who seems all too eager to increase rates.
Is my premium going to go up beyond £200 though? AppleCare+ is £89 plus the excess of £79 or £25 depending on the damage caused. It’s another £59 for the Apple Watch. I think based on my experience I think the risk is worth it. I negotiate my home contents insurance every year and set a target for the price I want. Whether I’ve claimed or not I play companies off each other to get the lowest cost. My wife has claimed for a mangled iPhone in the past and the premium was absorbed by changing providers.Your excess and bump in future premiums will cost you more.
Personally I always get AppleCare+ on devices that leave home. Sheet happens (see here).
AppleCare is in a different league of Service to other Insurance policies. They want you to send the device off for diagnosis. Take a few days to repair. Usually you have to chase them for updates. All the time you’re without your device. A friend of mine claimed on a Mobile Phone policy with Aviva and twice the phone came back as unrepaired. He kept having to send it back. It was a farce.
You don’t get that stress with AppleCare+. 24/48 replacements.

There’s no right answer to this and we pay what we are comfortable with. I already spend a lot with Apple and would rather have the fall back of a slightly more inconvenient dealing with my insurers and save £150-200 than pay out when I’m very careful with my devices anyway. We do what we are comfortable with.![]()
I thought like you until I claimed on Home Insurance once.
No it won’t go up by £200 on your next renewal but it will go up and stay up for at least 3 years. This is how they operate. That will be more than £200.
As you rightly said, Insurance is a personal preference. You can take the chance or pay to move the Risk over to Apple. You don’t need Insurance until you need it.
The time you spend shopping around for homeowners/renters insurance every year I spend in the pool. Wearing my Watch. With AppleCare.I still feel the same despite claiming. As I said I make sure my premium goes down each year by shopping around.
Do you not bother insuring your home then? Seems a silly statement to me unless you don’t own your own home. It would be very stupid of me not to have insurance that covers everything I own and worth the hour I spend each year. The time you spend shopping around for homeowners/renters insurance every year I spend in the pool. Oh good grief! No, I don't own my condo. I rent. Yes, I have renter's insurance. Yes, I'm happy with my renter's insurance and my insurance company (where I also have my car insurance, so there is a discount). And no, there isn't any renter's insurance that would cover damage to my Watch (broken screen? non-functioning crown? etc) at an affordable cost OTHER than AppleCare. Therefore, I choose not to spend several hours every year (it takes longer than one hour where I live to change insurance) to shop around for a renter's insurance policy that still wouldn't cover my Watch.Do you not bother insuring your home then? Just a general comment, no insurance on anything is worth it until you have a claim. Here’s how I look at it:
low probability + low consequences/low cost = no insurance needed
low probability + high consequences/high cost = probably, house insurance might be a good example where self-insuring isn’t wise though the probability of major damage might be small. Also US Federal homeowner’s flood insurance is a good example
high probability + low consequences/low cost = maybe, in the case of the Watch, some people are prone to banging them up but the cost of replacement isn’t life changing like a house or nice car. You know who you are, lol, get AppleCare+. Also maybe a good idea for kids/teenagers gear.
high probability + high consequences/high cost = definitely if the price of insurance/warranty isn’t prohibitive.
My home contents insurance covers my home for fire and theft and I have cover for items including my iPhone and watch up to £10k. It costs around £350 per year and is a quick process on comparison sites and follow up calls. I don’t spend long and it doesn’t interfere with me exercising or going swimming. I usually do it while at work too.Oh good grief! No, I don't own my condo. I rent. Yes, I have renter's insurance.
