Interesting....

" If you pay for your AppleCare plan on a monthly basis, it's linked to your Apple ID for billing purposes and can't be transferred to a new Apple ID."

I say it really depends on how much was spent on the original watch. I bought AppleCare + on my old Series 3 Stainless cellular and current XS Max, but did not on my new Series 5 Aluminum GPS-only. My Series 5 was $429; AppleCare is $79 (initial cost) + $69 (deductible), so is a substantial percentage of my base-model watch. After a year, if I smash my Series 5, I've decided that I'll just eat the cost and buy a Series 6.

On the other hand, if I bought a stainless or titanium Series 5, I would feel much more compelled to protect it with AppleCare.

I have Apple care on my current SS S4 and have had it on all previous watches starting with watch 0 but, never used it until today when haptic and Digital Crown stopped working. Called Apple support this morning. New watch on the way. So glad I had AppleCare.
I always get Apple Care on all of my many Apple devices. I used it on my Series 0 watch when the swollen battery defect in S 1 caused my screen to pop off. Apple sent me a free Series 1 watch as a replacement with Apple Care.

I’m glad you can keep paying monthly for Apple Care now after 2 yrs. My Gen One iPad Pro had an issue after 2 yrs 10 months that Apple said would cost $600 to fix. I bought a new Gen Three 12.9 inch iPad Pro last week but could’ve had the Gen.One fixed free or reduced if Apple Care was still in effect.

Pulling this thread up again... Has anyone in Canada purchased the AppleCare+? Its friggin $199... Edition already have 2Yrs standard warranty. Is it worth throwing another 2bills on this? 13% tax too!

I purchased it for piece of mind also. I have active lifestyle and accidents might happen to my watch. The cost is not that bad.

Frankly I don't think AC+ is worth it. Just take decent care of your watch and never ever wear cheap knock off band and you're good.

I had a SS S2 for 3 years, got it replaced twice for free (software issues) and once for only $350 because that one time was obvious physical damage (dropped it because I used a 3rd party magnetic band and $350 is still less than AC+ cost + deductible). Now I have a SBSS S5 and will definitely pass on AC+ again. And I'm probably gonna upgrade my AW again in 2 year time so a 3-year insurance plan is even more useless for me.

Here’s my take on Apple Care on pretty much everything: Do I ”need” Apple Care? Probably not, looking at it JUST from the ACCIDENTAL damage perspective. I have never made any accidental damage claims. But I’ve had things on the inside go bad. Multiple times, multiple Apple products. To me, “if anything happens, it will happen during the first year” is a silly approach/proposition because if that was the case we would have all of our stuff last forever. You may have a 7 year old vehicle with no accidents, but please don’t tell me that you’ve never taken your vehicle to the shop to get some work done. Accident free doesn’t mean things won’t require maintenance at some point. There’s wear and tear on EVERYTHING we use in our daily lives.
Now, Apple Care for the Apple Watch. AW is a wearable. It doesn’t sit in your pocket/purse all day. It’s out there exposed at all times. Gym equipment, door knobs, seat belt knuckle, engine bay, hard surfaces, you name it. Apple Care+ for the AW starts at $79. That’s $3.29 a month.
What does $3.29 mean to you? Cup of coffee? Dollar Menu at McDonalds? The tip that you just left on a $10 bar tab? I am happy to “waste” $3.29 each month if I end up not making any claims during the ownership of my AW. $3.29 buys me peace of mind. I don’t have to have the “I cheaped out and said no to $79, I don’t want to pay $349 (cellular version) to get my Watch screen repaired and now I have to buy a new AW” conversation with anyone.
TLDR: $3.29/month gets you the peace of mind. Your mileage varies. Good luck.

Excellent comments and true. Because my ceramic gets exposed in the gym to all gym equipments, the office or anywhere wherever I am and has very higher accidental risks compared to iPhone, I purchased the Apple Care plus.

I didn’t bother (nor needed it) for my s0, S2, and s4. But I just bought a SB titanium and got AppleCare+ this time around.

With the 3 year coverage of the Edition watch, I figured if I upgrade early I’ll just request for a prorated refund on my remainding AppleCare+.

Top tip for any insurance policy which isn’t mandatory. So pets, gadgets, extended warranty etc is to just put that money into a savings account each month. So we have an account which we use for ANY repairs. The washing machine, car maintenance, pets, broken phone screen.

that way it’s money in your pocket. And if it’s big enough it can buy you a new watch.
Way more efficient user of your money

Just a general comment, no insurance on anything is worth it until you have a claim. Here’s how I look at it:

low probability + low consequences/low cost = no insurance needed

low probability + high consequences/high cost = probably, house insurance might be a good example where self-insuring isn’t wise though the probability of major damage might be small. Also US Federal homeowner’s flood insurance is a good example

high probability + low consequences/low cost = maybe, in the case of the Watch, some people are prone to banging them up but the cost of replacement isn’t life changing like a house or nice car. You know who you are, lol, get AppleCare+. Also maybe a good idea for kids/teenagers gear.

high probability + high consequences/high cost = definitely if the price of insurance/warranty isn’t prohibitive.
Agreed. I have it on both watches in my household. Both are aluminum S2s, both are a little scratched, and now both are past the period of the AppleCare. Total waste of money.

Did you end up purchasing AC+?

At $199, that's a fairly steep price and is over 20% of the value of the watch. I have never purchased extended warranty / extended insurance as I self-insure. But accidentally breaking the Titanium edition AW 5 would be painful thus I'm considering adding AC+.

I tend to always purchase AppleCare. In fact, in the US we have the Apple iPhone Upgrade Program, which includes AppleCare.

I've yet to have an iPhone repaired, but AppleCare has always been worthwhile on my Macs as I tend to wear out keyboards in 18 months or so.

I also had AppleCare on my Series 0 Watch, which was a stainless steel model with the sapphire crystal. It was a new product so it seemed prudent to have the coverage. That watch looks like new after nearly 5 years of daily wear, and it has required no repairs and still works perfectly, though the battery is growing weak. My previous Casios (including a fancy titanium-body model) all looked like they'd been chewed on by squirrels after a few months, both in body and the crystal, so the durability of the stainless/sapphire Watch really impresses me.

Now I've just upgraded to a Series 5 aluminum model. Since the durability of the ion-hardened crystal is not what the sapphire's is, and since I'm proven to bang up watches, I purchased AppleCare again.

Bottom line: if you tend to bang up watches and have an aluminum Watch model, AppleCare may be worthwhile. For a model with a sapphire crystal, it's less justified but may still bring peace of mind.
