Turn by turn is a bit of a gimmick to me. Neither google nor apple maps are better than my satnav. Good for an emergency I suppose.

On foot, which is when I use maps on my phone most, apple maps is awful, google excellent. It's all about the POIs, and apple just doesn't have them here. Yelp is a US company with little impact in other countries. Baffling why apple decided to rely on them so heavily.

I'm in Calgary. I see Google in the routing app list too but it doesn't work there either

In Ottawa the Google one said it doesn't have the Bus info. Then I go to Apple maps and get directions from one place to another. When you change it between Car, Bus and Walking and choose bus it make you select the Google Maps app. Then it gives me the Bus info. Now every time I use Google the bus info works.

Yes. Now that I know you can do turn-by-turn voice navigation even from the homescreen and lockscreen, it's an absolute yes.

Can I ask what you mean by this? It has visual feedback on where to turn with a banner like Apple Maps, or do you mean the voice guidance continues in the homescreen/lockscreen?

I have not seen any actual maps from the homescreen/lockscreen...only text.

The voice system continues as normal, and the turns come in as a notification and disappear when completed. It's not as slick as Apple Maps lockscreen navigation, but nobody else could have done that.

I haven't even seen text on the lock screen...

Happened to me this afternoon...like a notification box in the dead center of the screen....voice prompt as well at the same time....

The box as the Google Maps app symbol on the left and the "direction" in text to the right of that (e.g. "turn left")

using apple maps cause i like the turn by turn, but i have google maps installed as a backup just incase.

Google Maps for me. It has more traffic data (at least in London, anyway) which is something I use every day, and it just looks much nicer imo (Apple maps seems a bit more dull in comparison). That's just my opinion though :p.

Oh, but for turn by turn I really liked Apple Maps - but haven't used Google Maps one. I don't drive anyway, only used it once to try it out!

"Icon with no data" haha, I like the way you describe it :D

For me in my area the Apple Maps is working great, but I could never rely on that alone. As a poster did above I have a few in my navigation folder:
Maps
Google Maps
TomTom USA
CoPilot USA

Always have a backup plan. I've learned no one solution is all perfect.

Apple Maps because Siri is fantastic (seriously, they must have given her steroids).

If I go somewhere without good apple coverage, I can always use gMaps. But Apple's solution, for me, is much better (Siri, transit, sharing)

And I'm sick of getting uber-targetted ads everytime I search for something on google.

In the end, though...2 great apps. I'm loving my iPhone.

I don't like Google Maps as a navigator
Sure there many other apps in the Appstore for navigation that will be better than Google Maps

Same here. Google Maps for us iPhone 4 users is a no brainer. We now get full turn by turn navi with voice guidance. I've been trying it since yesterday on my trusty iPhone 4 and it's been flawless, quick recalculations etc...

Not to mention POIs. On Apple's maps I was averaging 1 in 4 for accurate POIs. Now it's closer to 100% on GMaps.

Next step would be if Google tied their Google search app (voice search) with the Google Maps app, then iPhone 4 users would get almost the full siri experience, only from Google.

I will use google maps and Navigon... Apple maps app is already in the trash folder.

Interesting, I'll have to test that out sometime.

For quickly finding my way around town on foot or bicycle I will absolutely use Google Maps. Apple maps is unreadable and useless with POIs in Europe (why oh why Yelp??).
For car navigation, neither one of them. In-car navi is absolutely superior to both. Big screen, clear instructions all the time, integration with radio, no ridiculous battery usage etc.

I like the new added features, but it's clear that they need Apple to iron out their UI. I see all the rave reviews, but it feels quite choppy and not as polished as the originsl stock iOS app. It feels like an android app on my iPhone.
The app feels a bit clumsy. As much as I was looking forward to it; it will not be my go to app. The best combination was Google's data with Apple's interface/software talent. That combination was really awesome, and their separation really shows each of their weaknesses.

No more fightning. Please get back together!
