Those of you who use Gmail, how do you handle your contacts?

Right now, I use exchange for Gmail, but I sync my contacts with address book, because I have so many contacts in Gmail its just ridiculous. Plus, Gmail seems to add every address I've ever even looked at funny.

How do you sync your contacts and keep them relatively clean?

Personally I rarely meddle with my Gmail contacts. I send emails to a few people so I just use them when on my iPhone I just keep emails in the address book under whose they are.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

I'm going to be using a backup.

I'm going to be doing a backup from iTunes. I have WAY too many apps to consider downloading them all over again.

I'm going with a clean install. I'm running iOS4 right now on my 3GS and think restoring a backup might mess with things a little. Figure a clean install is the best way to go.

I am personally going to do a restore to see how it runs. If it runs like crap then I'll wipe it and start over.

I will definitely be restoring my backup. No reason to have to reconfigure everything and lose your texts. The only times I've restored and set up a new profile is when I've had major issues.

starting fresh. could care less about my call history, texts, settings, etc. :) dont want the 3GS settings/tweaks/crap that has been left over from the backup to be put on the new iphone.

I think I'll start fresh. I make regular backups of my most important non-cloud apps (AwesomeNote, 1Password, iXpenseit) and save them to Dropbox, and the rest pull their data from the internet, so I'll just install them as new and set everything up again.

I'll be restoring my backup. However, do I have to upgrade my 3G(currently on 3.1.3) to 4.0 and do the backup that I will use to restore on my iphone 4, or can I just use the 3.1.3 backup on the new phone?

I'm thinking a restore. My 3GS was my first iPhone so I obviously set it up as new, but I'm undecided on what I should do with my iPhone 4.

If I restore I keep my texts, not really important at all, just a conversation I had with my mother is all I would want to keep. Don't laugh. :D Other than that, I don't really care too much.

Would a restore make the phone sluggish at all?

Losing texts is a good point, although I don't really text, so that's not an issue.

For Mac users, all your photos can be backed up easily in iPhoto, and put back on the phone.

Also, as long as your apps are still in iTunes, I think even your saved game data will be restored when you sync the game back, right?

I'm not trying to convince anyone, just thinking out loud.

No, but you won't have to re-download all your apps like one poster suggested.

Going to start fresh. Will suck to lose all game saves but I guess that's a good reason to re-play them or buy new games :)

Will be restoring from a back-up, I keep my phone pretty clean, really don't want to lose my text. I plan on updating my 3GS on the 21st and set all my folders, so on the 24th, I can just plug it in and copy from my back-up :).

I have restored from backup each time with no issues. I will restore from backup this time too.

Good question!

I just thought I'd mention, I also had some serious battery life problems when I did a backup restore on my 3G, like someone posted above. For some reason, performance kept getting slower and slower, and battery life kept getting worse and worse.

I finally broke down and did a fresh restore, reloaded music and apps manually, reconfigured email, etc. All of a sudden it was like a brand new phone again.

The fact that I'm going from a 3G to a 4, and some settings and things will be different, makes me definitely want to start fresh.

Besides, I'm going from 16GB to 32GB, so I have to rethink my music library anyway. ;)

yea I was going to set up as new just due to the horror stories from people using backups.

if we set up as a new device is there no way to restore text messages?

For those who have jailbroken...

I installed iOS4 on my 3G and did a restore and with the clean install I still noticed my WIFI bar being numeric, obviously a leftover from Winterboard.

I then jailbroke my phone again and noticed a lot of leftover artifacts from my previous jailbreak while using iFile.

So I guess my questions is, when doing a restore am I still going to have jailbroken leftovers hanging around on my new phone?

so..how can I keep my apps and such w/o putting iOS 4.0 on my 3G before getting iPhone 4? or is it even possible w/o switching to iOS4.0

I can't believe I'm even reading this thread. I must be getting close to deciding to upgrade... I see another year of rice and beans on the dinner table.

Anyway, if I do upgrade I would start fresh. It's a one time thing, so I don't mind that it takes awhile to reload the apps on first sync, and to re-enter certain data. I like new hardware to get its best chance to shine while I am getting used to its capabilities.
