so..how can I keep my apps and such w/o putting iOS 4.0 on my 3G before getting iPhone 4? or is it even possible w/o switching to iOS4.0

You can restore a backup from 3G to iPhone 4. It doesn't matter if you have IOS4 or not.

I'll be restoring from backup. Ideally, I don't want to lose all of my stuff. But if anything goes wonky with that, then I'm OK with starting fresh.

Just elect to have the computer's contacts copied to the iPhone on the first sync.

great news...so all I need to do is plug in my iPhone 4 and restore from back up and I am good to go?? 🙂

i have a first gen phone. i really want to keep the contacts/calendar i have. guess i'm going to cross my fingers and backup those. After a few days of getting used to the new features I'll add the apps/pics/music.
