No. I'm one of the lucky ones without reception issue. I went to my car dealership today for an oil change and I could never get reception in the waiting area with my 3G. Today with my Iphone4 I had perfect reception and was able to carry on a call with no issue. Unfortunately I didn't think to check and see how many bars I had. Honestly, I never look at my bars, I just care about being able to carry a call.

Absolutely.....NOT.

Can I replicate the "problem"? Sure if I spend minutes with the phone gripped so hard the phone is inches from crumbling. As far as it's effect on my daily use, there is none. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

Dealing with a company that says "Deal with it" is a bit refreshing in contrast to a company that basically says the same thing, cuddled and curdled with rhetoric and patronization. Tomorrow's conference is purely an entertaining curiosity for me. Will I accept some free merchandise? Certainly. I, however, won't be affected since the issue has eluded my actual use.

Recall? You must be kidding. Even though a recall would add much more hype than the initial launch, and probably even go Apple's way (since all they touch turns gold), they aren't going to recall a product that most people haven't suffered under. I'd like to know who the first geek (no offense to geeks, since I obviously qualify as for hanging on a forum), but I wanna know who the first geek with too much time on his hands was that took his iPhone 4 and squeezed the antenna until the bars dropped.

What will happen then? My guess is that Steve will talk about the new software and how it has a more precise reading of actual signal strength. Then maybe, and this is a big maybe, offer up some Apple cash to those who have purchased before a certain date (like todays). Then he will (not so) politely tell the world that they have 30 days to return for full refund and strut his 5.5 billon dollar stuff off stage to a certain nostalgic tune of his choosing.

I honestly envy you. I was near tears after being sent from person to person on Apples support line. After an hour my call dropped and they did not call me back ;-(

I definitely don't want to return it but I'm not going to be stuck with a problematic phone for 1 and half years at the least. I love the screen, camera and video rec. but I can't overlook the problems. I've decided against android, so if I do return it, it'll probably be for a 3gs.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a good day for all of us, we'll have to wait and see though.

If we don't get some satisfactory information tomorrow, I'll either research my options or go back to my excellent 3GS.

What exactly would have to happen for the "problems you can't overlook" to be resolved? I'm asking in sincerity.

Does anyone think we will hear about all the problems (antenna, proximity sensor, etc.) tomorrow? I highly doubt it.

It's a press conference which usually entails questions in the end. Lets say they ignore this, by the time people start to ask questions, you bet your sweet arse they would bring it up.

I'm not really sure where all the "death grip" talk came from, but that has not been what has been causing the signal to deteriorate for me. All I have to do have the lower half of the phone gripped in my hand and, regardless of the strength of my grip, I can go from full bars to nothing in a matter of seconds.

I have tried the iOS update. I have tried re-seating my MicroSIM. I wish this problem didn't exist.....but it does and I am tired of being told my calls sound garbled and am definitely tired of having calls dropped all together.

For me it is simple....fix the degrading signal issue in a manner other than saying "hold it different". I'm not particularly a fan of the bumpers (mostly because they look goofy while offering no real protection for the device) but even that would be better than nothing.

Better return it OP, cause the're ain't gonna be a full recall. There may be a in store exchange for a fixed one for people that can replicate the problem to a genius and has 4.0.1 running on the phone or maybe free bumpers or store credits.

I really doubt there's gonna be a recall. Although a lot of people are affected, there is a lot of people that isn't too. Why would they recall all the phones if only a percentage are affected by it? Now if that percentage was the vast mayority of the iphones out there that would be a different story. But nobody knows and no one has yet to prove how many iphones 4 are affected by it. So its hard to argue for a recall in my opinion.

Besides to much money to loose with a full recall.

So you just don't read that's it right? Consumer Reports reproduced the issue and said they "couldn't recommend the iPhone 4 until this issue is resolved".

One of the smartest antenna designers said he tried this design 10 or more years ago and the same issue happend.

Engadget took a volt meter to the iPhone and conducted conductivity tests and found the difference to be .06 which is AWFUL.

I dont have to hold this phone for 2 minutes for it to happen, in my apartment I will drop a call in seconds if I switch to holding it that way.

If you search my post history you'll find that when I got the phone at first I thought it was perfect, but this was because I was living in an area with amazing signal. Flash forward to this week, I just moved into my new apartment and dont have great signal, I drop calls left and right, and my data connection cuts out if I hold it the wrong way.

If this problem doesn't affect you, thats awesome, and im being serious. I wish this problem didn't affect me but it does. However, its NOT OK to act like there is no problem just because you don't experience it....Consumer Reports doesn't just come out with statements like that without backing it up...have you seen erica sadun's strength app, its all proof...so stop muddying up this discussion with your fanboyism.

YES.....

I said yesterday that I was done and going to return the phone today. A few hours after I said that, they released the information about the press conference and then it was rumored that the software was going to be released today. So I decided to wait 1 more day.

Well, it doesn't look like the software does anything for my problems, so we'll see what they have to say tomorrow.

The signal problem exists with mine. I can just lay it flat in my hand (no death grip) and the signal will drop and when running speedtests the data drops significantly. I can live with that.
The biggest problem is the proximity sensor, I hate to use this phone because I know it will have problems (almost every call).
That along with alot of other little bugs that should have been fixed in the latest software release.

Do you know how any other ATT smartphone would perform in your new apt? I wouldn't be surprised if you continued to have issues, regardless of the phone. Frankly, a Microcell would probably be worth the expense.

Nope not returning I have not been able to recreate the issue but I bought a bumper and some cases off ebay so I am happy ..I know this is a problem for some people so I say return it and shut up or buy a case why would you not want some kind of case on it anyway to protect the phone can get nice ones off bay for a dollar or two. I'm just saying one thing apple does is look out for customer no other phones have the warranty they have with out having to pay a deposit to get a new phone

There are many cases, including some that are clear and show much of the phones good looks. Given that the bumpers and all the cases handle the reception problems and also provide at least some degree of additional protection why not just go for the bumpers or a case?

FYI: THe timeline of my phone experiences are kind jumbled. Used the iPhone 3GS when I was showing the place to people. Used iPhone 4 at home after I got it and was waiting to sign lease. Used iPhone 4 at new apt after I signed my lease last week.

My iPhone 3GS was amazing there. Full 5 bars the entire time. I got 4.8mb down when I tethered to my computer, never dropped a call, and never lost data. Not being like HA, just telling you something you wanted to know.

This isn't a viable option and nor should it be a solution. If you like cases thats awesome, I personally hate cases. It's a phone for god sakes, im not gonna baby it, its a tool I use, plus the phone ends up being thicker/wider, less comfortable to hold, and lets be real here, the phone is too beautiful to hide.

This whole get a case logic is honestly the dumbest thing i've ever heard (This isn't only against you Pete, I know your not nearly the first or last to say it). I like my phone with nothing on it, how it was meant to be shown and held. Getting a case isn't a solution or fix. Period.

No way, I love this phone. Besides, my bumper has taken care of the problem for the most part.
