MS just released a tool that allows you to block updates. Supposedly works with retail version too.

I thought ALL Home versionsvwould auto updacie.
A fresh install of the newest build of Windows 8.1 boots in 8-9 seconds without AHCI.
I just did a clean install of 8.1 and on my system it takes 30+ seconds to booting a 7200 RPM drive. I'm happy with that as I don't really use Win, it was here for the "Just In Case" factor for my wife. I've had it on a VM for a long time, but I wanted to play with BootCamp, so there you go
I've read I can get a free upgrade to Win 10, and it's supposedly better than 8.1. Where do I go to download this version, or is there something in the Win 8.1 update section that will handle this?
Check down in the tool tray bottom right ... there should be a Windows icon showing by now. Click on that and it will take you through the registration to receive the update to Windows 10. Don't do it from your VM, only from the BootCamp boot.Great, thanks. It's fully updated as of about a week ago, but I've not booted it since. I'll check it tomorrow...

I use it often to move internal BootCamp to external SSD Thunderbolt drives, and to move Windows from smaller drives to larger drives as technology gets cheaper (you can also go from large -> small drive/partition). It has never let me down! I run a WinClone snapshot after any significant update (weeklyit seems) so I can always recover if something goes wrong.
For a new external disk, simply use Disk Utility to initialize it with FAT32, then let WinClone do its thing. WinClone will move your total Windows environment to the new disk, make it NTFS, and create the bootable files necessary.
The critical thing for me is that it all is done under OS X. You read countless tales-of-woe on these forums from people who have used a Windows based utility to manage their disks and ended up with a disaster as the utility mucked up OS X in the process.
I have been using Acronis in the past, but not lately. It comes now bundled with Corsair SSDs. I used to use it routinely on VMs for a very fast defrag. Yep, before SSD everywhere.I need to move my Boot Camp to a Samsung Evo 850. Are there any free Windows apps that reliably mimic SuperDuper or CCC? I see few options but they all seems to come with a catch. Either too complicated or haven't been updated for years.
Edit: Macrium Reflect Free appears to be suitable
Another thought this is BootCamp. Use WinClone - period. Get the latest, worth it. It's awesome. Hi thank for the insights! I wonder whether winclone can move bootcamp from internal HDD to external SSD (thunderbolt) when the external SSD already has Mac OSX installed. It is to create separate partitions on external SSD where it already has OSX.

If your Windows update hasn't shown up yet you can try two things
1 type the following in Command Prompt to force check for the download:
wuauclt.exe /updatenow
2 download the ESD file from Microsoft Update direct. These were posted a week ago for manufacturers so they might not include all the updates that have been produced since
https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3ee1gx/windows_10_10240_esd_download_here/
I would recommend using the first method to get the newest and most stable installer
Yeah didn't work for me either. I downloaded from the website.Just tried the update command (after finally finding the command prompt CMD file). That didn't work, so I'm downloading the ESD file now.
