Windows 7 hasn't been around enough to be deemed 'amazing'. Like any version of Windows, it's likely starting out fine, only to gradually deteriorate into a complete mess...
I've heard from several sources that Windows 7 is pretty much on par with Snow Leopard. I've not been happy with Apple's lagging adoption of what are standard specs on other computers. The OS has always been a legitimate selling point for a mac, if that isn't the case anymore, they're gonna have to do something with their hardware.
I'm waiting for the first company to come out with a machine that has *both* a Blu-ray drive and USB 3.0--hopefully that's Apple. Unless Apple released a completely new product that changes the game entirely--as they have sometimes in the past--I'll be switching back to a PC. A beautiful aluminum case only gets you so far and there is no need to pay a premuim price for last year's technology. That's essentially what people are doing if they buy a mac today.
I think Windows 7 is pretty great. My job requires me to have a decent gaming rig available, and I have always been a PC gamer primarily. Windows 7 gave a really good boost at a time when I thought gaming on the PC would die. I had horrible experiences with Vista, so when I upgraded my gaming rig and threw the 7 Beta at it, my faith in proper gaming was reestablished.
It's still not "better" than OS X, it's just different. I use them for different things, so it's futile to compare them directly.
Blue ray drive machines already exist and USB 3 was late to finalize but will be supported in Win7 with an update I believe.
Im just hoping Win7 starts bringing down the costs of multi-touch screens. Somehow, Ive grown to hate the keyboard. Its like this plank with 100 some-odd mechanical buttons doesnt seem to fit in with the digital future. And then you have this mouse that only allows you to interact with 1 pixel on the screen at any instant. I know weve been doing that for decades but somehow it just feels like theres gotta be something better. A better way know what I mean. But just that the technology hasnt caught up in a while. Look how the iPhone made such an impact just because you can pinch stuff on a tiny screen.
I know that there are blu-ray laptops out there already. However, I'm waiting for the combination of blu-ray *and* USB 3.0. As far as I know, there aren't any USB 3.0 computers released yet, but I have not searched exhaustively for one.
I have a feeling Apple will not be late in releasing USB 3.0, but I'm less certain of blu-ray. Apparently, no one is making drives small enough to fit into the current MBP so obviously that is a stumbling block. I'm also not about to pay $20 and wait an hour for an HD movie to download from Itunes when I get discs from netflix.
um.. i would like to see you try to type a 10 page research paper without a 'plank with buttons on it'
if you mix numbers, and our english alphabet, plus modifiers - the # is already in the 100's range.
add in some function keys and you have what we call the keyboard.
if you come up with a better alternative you will be rich, but for how many things we are doing on the computer this is definitely the best way to do it.
not to say i wouldn't like a multi touch trackpad like all the 'concept alu apple keyboards'
thatd be sick

Maybe you can get an XBox...or NetFlix will have 1080p.

Ah a traditionalist. Yours is always a dying breed. Resistance is futile and you WILL be assimilated
What if my report is not in English and my plank with buttons needs to morph into different languages? And if my hands are smaller than yours? Or much bigger? Or I want something in-between straight and Microsoft angled keyboard?
What the heck does F1, F2, F12, "Shift-Apple-T" supposed to mean? Why cant it just say, Save, Copy, Fireball, "Meteor Shower"
Why cant it just have an icon a different one on the fly for every application in focus?
Why does my track-pad control one point if I have 10 fingers?
Your keyboard is best way to do it my rear!
They already make physical keyboards where what is displayed on the key can change. That allows it to be customized for various uses and display latters, symbols, icons, etc specific to that use.
I think the point the poster you are responding to was trying to make, is you need a physical keyboard. It may not be the same as they are now, but it won't be a touch screen either
Take that a normal flat panel screen used to be expensive. But for arguments sake an LCD the size of a keyboard would probably cost like $100 now. If you make it multi-touch and compare this to relative price of multi-touch screens presently, you can imagine that it would actually cost less than $1,700. Of course thats an over-simplification but what is true is that there are a lot less parts in such a device. Already, there are plans for dual screen laptops.

The advantage of such a device is that its not only an input device. Its a display and you can even say its a desktop on your desktop!![]()
Windows 7 also supports multiple screens where you can configure the position and the sizes to preserve aspect etc. So it works well with different displays.

The Microsoft Surface table has no keyboard. It can isolate like 50 discreet points.
And you may not get used to it right away, but someone who doesnt have to depress each key a few mm, will be able to type a lot faster. Just look at Lt. Commander Data in action!![]()
Hey! Don't forget Solitaire!First of all "her daddy is gonna belt her"?? What?!
Sacrilege! You can't say something like windows is better here! The only thing better about windows is pinball!
What do you guys do with your computers?
I've never reinstalled my computers unless I'm upgrading or wiping the hard-drive to give it to someone else.
You don't know how lucky you are ... I had to reinstall Snow Leopard due to a bad RAM stick on my Mini. Didn't know it was bad either until Snow Leopard came out.Same here- NEVER have reinstalled an OS in almost 20 years of computing....all Macs of course!
It looks like Windows 7 is decent or even good- but it still will be used on inferior hardware for most mainstream people who look for cheap PC's so it will still get a bad name....but glad to see it is much improved. Competition is good for everyone!!
