Windows 7 may be great (I dunno, I don't have any desire to try it). But you're still running a Microsoft OS on a 3rd party platform, with 4th party drivers, 5th party hardware, and 6th party apps that don't always follow a common look and feel.

No thanks. There's too many parties. I'll stick with Apple's monopoly on OS/Hardware. It just works.

Windows 7 hasn't been around enough to be deemed 'amazing'. Like any version of Windows, it's likely starting out fine, only to gradually deteriorate into a complete mess...

I can't believe I didn't mention that in my other post. So true.

I think Windows 7 is pretty great. My job requires me to have a decent gaming rig available, and I have always been a PC gamer primarily. Windows 7 gave a really good boost at a time when I thought gaming on the PC would die. I had horrible experiences with Vista, so when I upgraded my gaming rig and threw the 7 Beta at it, my faith in proper gaming was reestablished.

It's still not "better" than OS X, it's just different. I use them for different things, so it's futile to compare them directly.

I've heard from several sources that Windows 7 is pretty much on par with Snow Leopard. I've not been happy with Apple's lagging adoption of what are standard specs on other computers. The OS has always been a legitimate selling point for a mac, if that isn't the case anymore, they're gonna have to do something with their hardware.

I'm waiting for the first company to come out with a machine that has *both* a Blu-ray drive and USB 3.0--hopefully that's Apple. Unless Apple released a completely new product that changes the game entirely--as they have sometimes in the past--I'll be switching back to a PC. A beautiful aluminum case only gets you so far and there is no need to pay a premuim price for last year's technology. That's essentially what people are doing if they buy a mac today.

Blue ray drive machines already exist and USB 3 was late to finalize but will be supported in Win7 with an update I believe.

I don't think PC gaming will completely "die" anytime soon, but it will be reduced in significance.

Have you seen this stuff?

However I still think there will be a market for increased CPU and video cards and those “traditional” things.
With more multi-touch applications emerging in the future, apps in general will be more graphical and require handling multiple and more complex inputs and processing those in real-time.

I've been using Win7 for about 6 months now, and while it's light years ahead of XP I still think OSX is far superior.

I’m just hoping Win7 starts bringing down the costs of multi-touch screens. Somehow, I’ve grown to hate the keyboard. It’s like this plank with 100 some-odd mechanical buttons…doesn’t seem to fit in with the digital future. And then you have this mouse that only allows you to interact with 1 pixel on the screen at any instant. I know we’ve been doing that for decades but somehow it just feels like there’s gotta be something better. A better way… know what I mean. But just that the technology hasn’t caught up in a while. Look how the iPhone made such an impact just because you can “pinch” stuff on a tiny screen.

I know that there are blu-ray laptops out there already. However, I'm waiting for the combination of blu-ray *and* USB 3.0. As far as I know, there aren't any USB 3.0 computers released yet, but I have not searched exhaustively for one.

I have a feeling Apple will not be late in releasing USB 3.0, but I'm less certain of blu-ray. Apparently, no one is making drives small enough to fit into the current MBP so obviously that is a stumbling block. I'm also not about to pay $20 and wait an hour for an HD movie to download from Itunes when I get discs from netflix.

um.. i would like to see you try to type a 10 page research paper without a 'plank with buttons on it'

if you mix numbers, and our english alphabet, plus modifiers - the # is already in the 100's range.

add in some function keys and you have what we call the keyboard.

if you come up with a better alternative you will be rich, but for how many things we are doing on the computer this is definitely the best way to do it.

not to say i wouldn't like a multi touch trackpad like all the 'concept alu apple keyboards'

thatd be sick

Maybe you can get an XBox...or NetFlix will have 1080p.

Ah…a traditionalist. Yours is always a dying breed. Resistance is futile and you WILL be assimilated…

What if my report is not in English and my “plank with buttons” needs to morph into different languages? And if my hands are smaller than yours? Or much bigger? Or I want something in-between straight and Microsoft angled keyboard?

What the heck does “F1”, “F2”, “F12”, "Shift-Apple-T"…supposed to mean? Why can’t it just say, “Save”, “Copy”, “Fireball”, "Meteor Shower"…
Why can’t it just have an icon…a different one on the fly for every application in focus?

Why does my “track-pad” control one point if I have 10 fingers?

Your keyboard is “best way to do it” my rear!

:D

Wonder what tomorrow's kids (in 10 or 20 years from now) will be doing. Probably doing these papers on their phones with a 60+ wpm typing prowress on average, and then emailing it off to their professor when done.

This relatively short clip plays nicely, however. . .

The standard definition content that current Neflix offers has to re-buffer about 3 or 4 times during a 2 hour movie on my broadband connection in NYC. I can imagine a HD movie would be even worse--especially considering that the cable companies in my area will soon begin capping data to prevent me from watching online content easily-- so that I'll keep my much more expensive cable subscription.

Also, only a tiny fraction of Netflix's libary is available online and that will not magically change when they start offering 1080p titles. The only other viable option is to pay iTunes for each individual movie rental/purchase--which would be far more expensive than simply getting a blu-ray disc mailed to me. The infrastructure for efficient movie length HD content does not exist yet (for a reasonable non-iTunes price) and probably will not for some time. I hope I'm wrong though.

However, I digress. Again, there's a good chance that I'll be getting a Windows 7 computer with the hardware I need next year. Unless Steve can cram some decent specs into those expensive aluminum jewels sitting in the Apple store.

They already make physical keyboards where what is displayed on the key can change. That allows it to be customized for various uses and display latters, symbols, icons, etc specific to that use.

I think the point the poster you are responding to was trying to make, is you need a physical keyboard. It may not be the same as they are now, but it won't be a touch screen either

You mean the OLED keyboard?
http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/
I’ve tried it but I sure wouldn’t pay $1,700 for one. That prolly has something to do with the number of components and electronics inside the device as well as low production.

And besides, Blizzard will not make drivers for that Optimus keyboard and form a partnership with them. So if anything, you would have to “program” it with all the different bitmaps in WoW, etc. to make you OLED keyboard into a WoW controller.

But what Blizzard WILL do is make some piece of multi-touch software control panel. Or some other software scheme, if enough ppl have these displays.

Take that a normal flat panel screen used to be expensive. But for arguments sake…an LCD the size of a keyboard would probably cost like $100 now. If you make it multi-touch and compare this to relative price of multi-touch screens presently, you can imagine that it would actually cost less than $1,700. Of course that’s an over-simplification but what is true is that there are a lot less “parts” in such a device. Already, there are plans for dual screen laptops.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/gadgetreviews/?p=1835

The advantage of such a device is that it’s not only an input device. It’s a display and you can even say it’s a “desktop on your desktop”! :p

Windows 7 also supports multiple screens where you can configure the position and the sizes to preserve aspect etc. So it works well with different displays.

The Microsoft Surface table has no keyboard. It can isolate like 50 discreet points.

And you may not get used to it right away, but someone who doesn’t have to depress each key a few mm, will be able to type a lot faster. Just look at Lt. Commander Data in action! ;)

I still like my physical keyboard. It's going to take something awesome to coax me into giving these buttons up.

First of all "her daddy is gonna belt her"?? What?!

Sacrilege! You can't say something like windows is better here! The only thing better about windows is pinball!

What do you guys do with your computers?

I've never reinstalled my computers unless I'm upgrading or wiping the hard-drive to give it to someone else.

Same here- NEVER have reinstalled an OS in almost 20 years of computing....all Macs of course!

It looks like Windows 7 is decent or even good- but it still will be used on inferior hardware for most mainstream people who look for cheap PC's so it will still get a bad name....but glad to see it is much improved. Competition is good for everyone!!

You don't know how lucky you are ... I had to reinstall Snow Leopard due to a bad RAM stick on my Mini. Didn't know it was bad either until Snow Leopard came out.
